So they must have been hired to go and retrieve this "relic" and knew about the lore and everything surrounding it. I'm going to look up some things to see if it's based in some sort of real mythology but it had a very Spacey feel to it too! I hope that you see this one through and make a full feature of this ! I would totally be into it 😁 cudos to the actors and actresses in this they did an amazing job! And so did you sir! 🦾🔥🔥🔥

@@Eevian666Not only the creature merits it a LC horror vibe, but the biggest thing that *makes* stories more LC is the fact in almost *EVERY* LC type story, it's guaranteed certain doom - Usually LC type stories never really end well, or they are *VERY* open ended and left to the viewer to try and conclude. This short film did a wonderful job grasping that concept, especially at the end, panning the camera to the sky showing us a glimpse at what might possibly be - But is it the end? Or just the beginning to this story? Does that creature have a weakness? We are alluded to it via a key, like some sort of salvation - That small glimmer of hope ... For someone else to find at another point in this stories universe? I highly suggest looking into more of H.P Lovecraft's work, most recently they've made one of his less popular short stories into a full length feature film featuring Nicolas Cage (who played the part PERFECTLY), called "Color Out of Space", the use of the color Magenta was brilliant, given it's not a "true" color ... There is a part in that movie, that will always haunt me - I really recommend it!

This was giving me all the right vibes. I really hope to see this get developed into something full-length. Were they scientists? Relic Hunters for hire? How much did they know beforehand bc it sounded like they knew a lot. What was the key? Was that stranger an alien in a human suit (that's my guess)? So what was the creature? Another alien? Something primordial? So many possibilities! I love it!

@@jmlfilm1 My initial thought was they were scientists, but as the story progressed I felt only some were science and the others were relic hunters. They knew something, prepped by the person funding the expedition. Not taking it seriously enough, they stumble into/misunderstand something related to inter-dimensional/spacial rifts. They aren't the only ones there for the relic (the mask), hence the alien in a human suit. But the creature is a dimensional hell-beast. Mash all the genres! But I am just spit-balling here. The fact that you can write your own story as an audience member just based on these 15mins is awesome. Gives you a creative experience which makes being the audience more of an active thing (usually so passive).

As with any properly written Lovecraftian script, a certain level of ambiguity will exist by design, as Joshua has implied above in his responses and answers to questions. I could be reading way too deeply into this, but my take on the story is as follows (I won't be the least bit offended if Joshua corrects me on this take): As best as I can understand the plot, it appears that they looted one of the masks of Nyarlathotep that the gatekeeper (the guy on the table with the key) had been guarding. The gatekeeper might have been an avatar for one of the Elder Gods (basically the benevolent counterparts to the malevolent Great Old Ones like Cthulhu). But the woman appears to have been an avatar for a far greater deity - one of the Outer Gods known as Nyarlathotep, the son of Azathoth (who is the ruler of the Outer Gods and the embodiment of all reality). Nyarlathotep has many different titles in the Lovecraftian pantheon and he is definitely someone you don't want to phuck with. He's known as the Crawling Chaos, the God of a Thousand Forms, the Stalker among the Stars, the Black Pharaoh, the Faceless God, and the Messenger of the Outer Gods.

in my personal opinion the pacing of the film was phenomenal bc when you’re watching a horror feature it’s not until the climax or last 10 minutes when you really understand the meatiness of what is being displayed, my opinion on what happened was the three players are put in two situations, one longing for the wholistic aspect of having the mask which comes with the conflict of interest within the key and finding someone injured and bringing him along back with them, as well as the foreshadowed things ab how they should’ve never came out there (cliché but it works every time), also when the dude goes to find the flashlight and see’s that mask it’s even more synonymous to why are they there and so ignorant to where they are, inviting the faceless god inside thru a familiar “face” is the other situation bc the female is worried ab who she loved rather than the situation already at hand but the man who was freezing is the “gatekeeper” per say and has been watching over that area for some time and is freed once they take the mask reason being when they find girl outside the first thing she says is that he did that to her and that he must die, leading to her getting the mask and shifting into the faceless god. my theory is long and i don’t expect anyone to read it but if you do, thank you :))))) haven’t watched an alter short in a while and this was perfect to watch right before halloween.

Tbh at first I found the sudden panic-feeling of the movie very disorienting (but i also havent slept for 24 hrs so that might be a part) though I really enjoyed it nontheless. There was a lot of "WTF?" involved there for me, though I feel like this explanation made it a bit clearer for me. Just as a question, what exactly did they see under the skin of the gatekeeper? I just wrote it off as a skull and them marveling at it made me confused.

Hey Joshuah Logan, saw this at HPLFF, and I want to say those final few minutes and the scream were drop dead amazing, to the point where I doubt anyone will get even remotely a similar experience at home without watching this on their TV or with the volume up. The mythology of what's going on being obscured is a fantastic choice. Part of me almost wants to adapt this to run for my friends as a Call of Cthulhu or Delta Green scenario.

Simply Brilliant. Well done to everyone who worked on this. Things that elevate this short Lovecraftian film above other attempts, even feature length ones: • Everyone retains their human motives throughout and emotions throughout, often in Lovecraft adaptations people stop being people and do things that ends up alienating them from audience. Despite whatever the three main characters witnessed prior to these events, they still care, have empathy etc. •There's no lingering on the jump scares, far too many horror films are like, " Look, a jump scare, no really, look at it, did you see it, are you sure?" •The practical effects transformation. •The film starts and ends with little explanation, I think that's the most brilliant part.

Honestly my opinion is that I wish the story was done better / the execution of what was said in the description. The tension was palpable, which is good for this genre, but for most of it, I didn't get that aspect of 'all life in the Universe would end' from what was being portrayed. I get that the confusion was intended, and for the 1st half it was done properly, but then it veered off course I suppose towards the end which I didn't like, since nothing was said or fully hinted at. That one horror scene of the transformation was *chef's kiss* Magnificent!

That 10:29 mark I for a split second I thought good was going to go to corny but then that and I was "Oh Gawd, gross!" What a scene! What a great piece of work that might have some easter eggs from Poltergeist and Aliens...but alas I could be wrong...what I am right about...is that this needs to be a feature length. If you can carry that tempo through a feature length, people will be raving about this. I love that facelessness of not knowing who was wrong or rather what in the room was wrong so no matter what you do you will end up with guilt or regret and man you need faith and belief to get through this. I am Christian but not dogmatic and some might say I am more spiritual but now I think I will start wearing the cross for guidance in these kind of situations. Thank you for this gem!

I know right?! I love acting and was reminded how much when I was in a pantomime in 2019 but I don't necessarily like the amount of ego and bullshit that comes with the field. I haven't been on anything on alter but I imagine every time that these are people that love to create and the ego gets set aside (cuz c'mon we all have ego in small doses it's good and competitive just right amount) so that the overall production and creativity can be enjoyed by so many of us viewers. Honest to God, people dream of making it to Hollywood. My dream was always Broadway but either way they dream of bright lights and money. With alter I dream of becoming a multi-millionaire that just helps all these people get the funds they need to make these projects big or I dream of having my own alter show aired. Or both. But hey the thing that makes this channel so good is the amount of stuff people do with one set and no money...or basic sets and great make up and some money but the writing and the acting and creativity is always top notch!

I do not know how long you had to fine tune your timing on this but I was on the edge of my seat! You got the whole point of what happened and the consequences of the characters actions out with no questions, the creature (including the wonderful morph sequence) was just wonderful- how it uses sound instead of just ripping everyone's head off to get it's point across... Very creepy! The lack of lighting and sense of panic really added to the atmosphere. I both do and don't want a clearer glimpse of whatever Kayla turned into (some sort of Cthulu based creature is my guess), but either way the film was excellent.

Loved the eldritch monster! Reminded me of this: The word disaster is derived from Middle French désastre, which in turn comes from the Ancient Greek pejorative prefix δυσ-, (dus-) "bad"[5] and ἀστήρ (aster), "star". The root of the word disaster ("bad star" in Greek) comes from an astrological sense of a calamity blamed on the position of planets.

OK guys we get it. Gore wins the day! This reminds me kind of the thing in 1982 with Kurt Russell… it was pretty bloody and gory like this kind of monster…But couldn’t anybody hold a flashlight still? that was a little unnerving to watch….all of them looking at everything…light beams going everywhere….I know I know, “Create tension!”, that was probably heck on editing with the lights, boy I would hate to do that editing job…you guys did a good job and it was great… kudos to everyone that worked on the film.hard Job isn’t it? Brilliant! it reminds me the prologue of The Empty Man (Nepal, a cabin, an arqueological find..). The difference is, in there they continued with a full movie (baaad one, imo) and in here they just stopped at the right time. Its good to know when to stop. Sometimes less is more. Also, congrats for being the guy the one who gets histerical and useless, and the girl keeping her cool and being proactive. So tired of cliches Good job to all

The effects where great. Superb even. (Goofy melting face was made up for by the appearance of “The Faceless God”) But that’s about the final five minutes. That’s also about the time the story starts opening up…. And then it ends. I dig the “mystery” and all but not so much the yelling of the near ridiculous dialogue. I get it, an apocalyptic scenario is trying to be averted and everyone’s nerves are on end… For me, it was hard just getting to those final five minutes. Good stuff, though. I thought this would be some over done zombie flick and was pleasantly surprised. 👌❤️

I am trying to figure out the poor man with the silver key is a reference to Randolph Carter? Nyarlethotep's face transformation was AMAZING. Unsure if the comet is a reference to "the stars are right" (or comet is right) or The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath, and/or Gate of the Silver Key. The ancient android was a kick to the face. The characters going straight bucknutty and bleeding out was spot on Lovecraftian fun time. Again, GREAT short.

I saw this on the compilation of Lovecraft shorts. I thought it was done very well. I haven't seen much about this particular god in movies, which is surprising to me because it's the one we'd encounter most..I think. I've been getting into reading Lovecraft finally as a huge horror fan. I think the Castle Rock series actually got me into the creeping chaos. I had no idea so many horror writers are influenced so heavily by Lovecraft. I wish we had more media with these stories. Thank you for making this. It was a really good representation. I loved the mix of practical effects and generated. The acting was believable too. Like others here, I'm confused about the key. Guess I should read more Lovecraft to get the reference. 😂
