In this episode of Collins Country we fenced in a 2 acre pasture and built a 2 horse stall for cheap! This includes a tutorial with DIY instructions and a horse barn tour... We have always wanted a horse and we are so excited to finally have one on our homestead:) Thanks for watching!

You really should consider changing the name of your post because it leads people to believe you're going to teach them how to build a stable for under $1700. I thought it would provide a list of materials, how much they cost & where to get them, etc So I watched for 15 minutes waiting for something to teach me how to build a barn for under $1700! That's my fault though, because after watching it just a few minutes, I knew it wasn't going to teach me what I'm looking for but I just kept watching it anyways because it was a cute video, & you have a beautiful family.

+Stacey Friedman’s Hello there! Thank you! Very sound advice:) We took that into consideration when choosing the building site for the pasture and stall. We live in the hills of Kentucky so run off here is good but it stays cold in the spring and rains a lot, so muddy is definitely a challenge before the hot summer hits. We have had the horse a few years and haven’t had any issues:) It has been a blessing! Thanks so much for the advice! Have a great week!

There’s a lot of work that went into that and the paddock fencing. This is not to take away from the work you did, but I was expecting from the title of this video to see a small barn with a stall(s), and to get a list of materials and costs. That structure is actually a run in - it looks just like our run in.

Thank you for the feedback! We always appreciate the honestly:) This was one of our first youtube videos. Unfortunately, we had no idea what we were doing back then. We didn't realize what info we needed to put in the videos, etc. Anyway- We have learned a lot in our small youtube journey and now we include every single detail in every video. I will get a list together of supplies that were in this project and add it to the description. Thanks again for your insight. And yes, it technically is a run in, but in real time we have added a lot more to it making it a stall. We will make the corrections:)

Good video! You're living my life in 2 year I hope! (We have the property but no time to build) I will give some unsolicited advice that putting a horse on a slope can turn into a mud pen if the drainage sucks or there aren't alternative pastures to let it dry out. I grew up on a hill and our horse had mud around her paddock, we had a slope leading to a flat spot and that's where we put the shelter. The first few years weren't bad but it got gross eventually. Hopefully you have planned for this but if not having full sun on the area will at least dry it up! Also the more acreage the less you have to worry. I didnt catch where you mentioned the space but I like this rule (I've heard many), first horse is 3 acres and 1 additional acre per other horse.
@CollinsCountry

+AmericanGothic Thank you! Good luck with your house build! You’ll have to post pictures on one of our videos so we can see it when it’s done:) Also- great advice! We love tips and tricks that people tell us. We are new to the horse world and I really wish someone would have told us this info about the slope beforehand. We do have good run off because our property is very hilly but her hooves leave big holes in the mud and then when it rains they hold water. It does get a lot of sun but it still gets super messy when it rains. Her pasture is 2 acres. We are working on fencing in another 4 acres pasture on our property to alternate so we can get an additional horse. Thanks for all your help! We will definitely take your info into account when building our next horse barn

@@CollinsCountry I absolutely will keep ya updated! You guys are very authentic to watch and that's hard to find on these farm YT, a lot of it seems scripted or planned! Your content wasn't a bunch of fluff, just some cuteness mixed in with the goods. Have fun with your horses for me! I'm scheming to buy and board while we build our own zone but I really should be patient so I'll try to live vicariously through YT. Might not work lol.

+AmericanGothic Wow. Such kind words! You have no idea how much we appreciate it! :) We started our channel as just a fun way to document our journey for friends and family. We had no goals when we started it (and I basically still don’t 😉) but it has slowly grown into something. It’s kinda a little hobby for us now. Something we enjoy doing and something we will enjoy watching 50 years from now. Our videos definitely aren’t scripted but sometimes they probably should be 😂 We just want to be ourselves. If people like it then great, but if they don’t that’s completely fine too. Anyway. Now I’m rambling (that’s why we need scripting sometimes! Lol). But good luck with everything! You can make all your goals and dreams come true if you work hard enough! Keep at it and keep us updated with your progress once you start

@CollinsCountry
@CollinsCountry Жыл бұрын
Hello! And thanks! We have one horse and this works perfect for her. We want a second horse but have not found the right one yet... It's perfect because she can run in when she wants to since it's open. Because of the direction it faces, rain never gets into her stall so it's always dry in there. If I did it over again, I honestly wouldn't change a thing. It has been perfect for us and was inexpensive to build. Good luck with your build!

@@CollinsCountry hey there! I just replied to your video and saw that you mentioned your acreage here. I highly recommend having a secondary area before+during the muddy season to turn the horses out. You did a mawvelous job on everything though, we only have 13ish acres and we plan to farm most of it so I'll probably be having to section and rotate 1.5 acre plots just to keep it decent, we dont have trees or sloping but we get floods so I have my own problems unfortunately : /

How deep did you dig the posts? How tall were the front posts and the rear? How did you figure out the slope of the roof
@CollinsCountry
@CollinsCountry 3 жыл бұрын
+Dakota Hayghe Hey! The posts are below the frost line so they are about 36 inches. The slope of the roof just ended up this way because we knew how tall we wanted it in the front and the back to be. I can’t remember the exact height of the posts so I’ll measure them tomorrow when I’m off work and let you know.

+Dakota Hayghe Hey! Sorry for just now getting back to you. Here are the dimensions- It’s 24ft across and 12 feet wide. The back posts are 8 feet tall and front posts are 12 feet tall. Honestly, we didn’t put much thought into the roof other than we didn’t want it too steep because we wanted to be able to walk on it to put the metal roof on and for simple repairs in the future. Hope this helps! 🙂

Without pulling receipts to get an exact cost, I would say it was roughly $1,650 for everything… But of course this was before the lumber prices went up… Now we could build this for almost free though because we bought a sawmill, so we would only need to buy the metal roof/siding:) If you have access to trees I 100% recommend buying a sawmill.
