Hi everyone😊 Salt is an essential mineral vital for the well-being of horses. Providing it during the summer is great because it allows horses to replenish electrolytes lost through sweating, while in winter, it encourages increased water consumption which is particularly important as horses tend to drink less in cold weather. In their natural habitat, horses roam great distances to find salt, which they get from various plants they consume and from salt deposits near water sources. Your show notes state "minerals," so what are the other minerals in the salt block? He really gets down into that block, like ice cream cones for the kiddos.

He's very versatile ~~ he licks the side of the block with the top of his tongue, then switches to the bottom of his tongue to lick the top. Do you know the biology of why a horse licks like that (as humans just use the top of the tongue where the taste buds are, right?) Asked you this before, but am seeing this trait again in a different horse, so it must be genetic.

Great question, however I'm not sure why he uses both sides of his tongue. I do know that the taste receptors are on the roof of the mouth and the back of the tongue.

Horses tend to use their lips to drink like humans. They do not lap like dogs and cats. Usually they use their front teeth to grit and scratch an itch. I figure with licking solids like metals or these salt blocks, they are trying to get as much as possible and licking would be a learnt behavior. Over time the horse will learn to lick with only the top side of the tongue and not like how it eats grass, like wrapping the tongue around it. Long and short of it, horses are not lickers 😂

It depends on the horse, some want more salt than others. Hard to say exactly. 🐴

Hi, I very like videos when horses or other animals licking something, I everytime watching these video before sleeping. Thats videos very relaxing me. And two videos from you is also my favorit, (and now we get a third) please making more long licking videos with horses.. 😅😅

Well if you click on settings and click "additional settings" there will be an option called loop So it will repeat and repeat!
