I’m a firm believer that the right horse finds you even if it’s when you least expect it. When we lost our horse Monty earlier this year I was in no hurry to find another horse, let alone go from our chunky 12 year ID old gelding to a pretty 6yr old ISH mare but just two weeks after losing him and still wracked with guilt and grief we found Maggie whilst flicking through ads on a whim and just knew somehow it was right. It’s taken a while to really bond but we recently had our first show and now I can’t imagine life without her. You’ll find the horse you’re meant to own just the same as you were meant to be there for Woody x

So nice to see you ! Good luck in your search. I always "knew" almost upon sight when it was the right horse. A few times I purchased without that feeling , going on the horse's merits etc to have it not work out. I went through this 3 times while shopping for my present horse. Finally. I saw an ad for a horse I had previously seen at a local clinic, tried him out and brought him home. 11 years later, I still have him. We've been through alot together. Best wishes to you Rhi! Look with your heart as well ❤

I would say how exciting, but I hated the horse buying process. When they’re ready, they’ll find you. I had 2 really nice horses fail vetting and then I went for something that had several things I thought were a no for me (colour,education,breed) and I did not want to get off. He was so green, unbalanced, rushy but holy moly he felt like my horse. He turned out to be nervous and spooky and I lost my confidence but even at my most scared, he still felt like he was meant for me and I never once thought about giving up on him. And now I’ve learnt so much about ground work, horse psychology, training etc. he’s given me a lot! It’s funny hearing you talk about reusing stuff. I have some saddle pads that I used to begin with but then I wanted him to have his own stuff. My grooming kit from my last horse, however hasn’t been touched. I can’t bare to even clean the brushes so I got a whole new one. Nearly 2 years later I still haven’t done anything with it.

I love watching you on KZfaq! I mean I follow you on Insta but there is nothing like a Rhi chat on KZfaq for me! I will also just say…. My boy was a bit of a grumpy bum when I got him and was ridden by a few different types of riders…. Since I bought him home and set up my own rules and boundaries, and after having him for almost 2 years now, he is actually really smoochy and affectionate now, not quite Woody level yet! I remember being so jealous of you and Woods but lately I seem to be getting more and more of those sweet moments too ❤ don’t discount who you are as I think some horses can really change with the right new environment and owner xo

Haha, I think Woody may have set my bar too high, he was really something else! But yes i think you’re right, especially when a horse has a chance to settle with an owner.

You will find the right one! Love that you have all your thoughts in order - I agree, sometimes horse #2 gives you perspective you may not have had at the start. Wishing you a great find in the future, and can’t wait to meet your new partner! ❤❤❤

That’s really odd your vet saying don’t X-ray the back, what about kissing spine!? I always fully X-ray if older than 2 years old.
@RidingWithRhi
@RidingWithRhi Жыл бұрын
I probably didn’t explain it very well. It’s not that she’s saying DON’T x ray the back, it’s more that she said you can’t always get a good picture. She would absolutely do it if I asked her to.

In my personal experience, horses that are workman like and not affectionate, can become affectionate. It's a case of finding their favourite places to be scratched, doing nice things like massages and putting their favourite food treats in their food and basically showering them with love. Listening to their cues helps too. One of the harness racing horses I dealt with when I did an advanced stablehand course, preferred to relieve himself in the stable after being exercised and before being groomed. Not groomed and then allowed to relieve himself afterwards. Because he didn't have to wait, that won me major brownie points with this horse. So as long as the workmanlike attitude isn't due to quietly tolerating a minor niggle, I wouldn't overlook these horses. I like to check the back with my hands. Admittedly I am quite strong, but if me pressing down with my hands and fingers makes the horse flinch, there's an issue there.
@RidingWithRhi

Yes that’s a very fair point! And re the back, I do the same thing, along with seeing if they’ll let me touch ears, tail, checking of tummy area and legs etc.

I hope you find what you are looking for !!! Xrays do not always tell you anything ? Blood tests do !!! Perhaps do both !!
@RidingWithRhi
@RidingWithRhi Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Bloods are always taken (albeit not tested, held for 6 months) as part of a 5 stage vetting anyway, so that’ll be covered along with all of the 5 stage tests which are substantial.
