Welcome back to my channel.
It's a review video for this weekend.
We are hopefully 🤞 heading towards warm sunny days again, and the fly rugs will be back in full use.
I thought I'd review a handful of rugs that are on the market. With one of my horse having sweet itch and the other having allergies I need decent rugs!
Looking at Horseware, Shires, Mark Todd, Weatherbeeta & Premier Equine.
Let me know in the comments the best fly and sweet itch rugs you've come across.

Oh and the first Mark Todd rug is what we call in Australia a hybrid rug because it's half cotton half fly mesh. Most common rug you see here in summer 😊

Interesting that the Mark Todd is a very common summer rug. It is used a bit here too, but I just find they always slip. Plus in the middle of summer they sweat under the cotton part. Literally you need a huge wardrobe for your horse. 😂🙈

@EJM Equestrian Ikr 😅 my partner once tried to tell me you only need three rugs per horse. I was like, What 😆😆😆

This was really helpful, thank you. Just wondering, what is the Rambo and Shires sweet itch rug fabric like? Is it like a very thick mesh? Cotton? Solid synthetic fabric like you'd get in a waterproof rainsheet? I've never seen/felt one in person and would need to order online, and as I live in Australia I'm always concerned about the heat. Thanks!

No problem. The Rambo Protector Fly rug is a tough mesh material. I use it when it’s hot and I can’t use the Horseware Rambo Hoody on my sweet itch horse. The hoody material is a tight woven polyester so not as breathable. The shires sweet itch rug is in between. So Rambo hoody my first choice but is the thickest rug but max protection I find. As it starts to get warmer the shires sweet itch. Then on very hot days I have to use the Rambo protector but that’s not a sweet itch rug just a fly rug.

@EJM Equestrian awesome thank you! I live in Western Australia where its dry, so we don't really get that many midges, but loads and loads of nasty biting flies. I thought it would be nice to have something a bit more resistant to the horses rubbing/biting/rolling etc than the standard fly mesh. Sweet itch seems like a real nightmare so I'm glad there are loads of options out there.

@@rhythmandblues_alibi ah okay. Well the mesh horseware protector one I think biting flies might possibly still be able to nip. I would try the shires sweet itch rug. It would be my fav. It’s not quite as robust as the horseware hoody but equally not as thick.
