Think of it as trying to pierce through skin using your punch compared to using a needle, with the same amount of energy, you can go much deeper with the needle compared to a punch because the energy exerted is focused on a much smaller point, also with the added horse, compare someone hitting something with a baseball bat while having a running start compared to a guy mounted on a horse using the horses' power and muscle to deliver a much bigger burst of energy on the bat to exert more power. that's the easiest way i can think of to explain it
