Join us, as we learn about the horses of the Mongolian Steppes. The Mongol horse is the native horse breed of Mongolia. The breed is purported to be largely unchanged since the time of Genghis Khan, and with Nomads managing over 3 million horses, they outnumber the country's human population. In Mongolia, the horses live outdoors all year, dealing with temperatures from 86 °F in summer down to −40 °F in winter, and they graze and search for food generally on their own. They serve as riding and transport animals, and are used both for the daily work of the nomads and in horse racing.

Tough little buggers. Man and horses both. But OMG. The Equine scientist in me is having a heart attack at some of these methods. No mention of losses in this lifestyle.

As an equine scientist myself i suggest you dig at once that if you don t eat the damn thing nor beat the hell out of the fuckin horse its ok.. you should see what human beings do to each other. I suggest we focus on human being (hunger, wars prisons etc where human rights are not protected and maybe on extra time if there is we see what we can do for horses (or hamburgers.. cause i heard the other day that they make hamburgers out of cows.. can imagine such a thing?)

I have enjoyed horses for many, many years but have only owned one horse. They are amazing animals and capable of many different things. These seem to be very hardy animals that are quite used to the extreme elements of nature but they seem a bit small for most Western men. I'm sure some are capable of handling a 200+ pound man but I wonder for how long? I'd love to spend some time with these horses in person. It's always nice to see humans and animals living in a shared environment.

These horse are actually small ponies, and only last a very short time. Just look at the shape they are in. Sad :(

@@Lagoloponly sad and small thing here is your brain unfortunately. Mongolian horses are relatively small compared to western counterparts but much more durable and resilient and self sufficient. They can cover 80 to 100 miles with rider in a day on average depending on the weather and terrain

They can carry 250 pounds and can travel at least 70 miles in a day with ease i can assure you that with personal experience. Dont get fooled by their size this breed's durability and stamina is exceptional.

Last place gets a smack on the arm or the back. That's the kid on the horse by I think what looks like Grandpa. Their methods seemed a bit harsh on the horses but that's just me I guess. Do they ever lose any horses by this method they use? Just curious.

If mongolians listened to 15-yo horsegirl princesses, who spends third of her parents' money on horse every month and rides it like twice a week, then they would all die out of starvation. Horses are meant to move a lot, to eat fresh grass, not stand in stalls like some kind of cattle.

I'm shocked by how short their horses are, perhaps their height are only around 120-130 cm at the wither. This means shorter than the tropical Sandalwood ponies of Indonesia. I've long believed that horses from higher latitudes are always bigger and taller than their tropical counterparts, until I see these diminutive short-legged big-headed Mongolian ponies.

An Arabian horse would not stand the very severe winters in Mongolia, temperatures getting down to minus 40 over a long period of time (not just nights). Nice to see some spotted ponies (LP gene) out there though, prooving just how widely spread these horses are.

This horses are not feeling fine. You didn 't have to beat a horse constantly. Maybe it is because of the behaviour of this clan and its leader, bc humans are individuals. The fact that they are admireing Djengis Khan shows that this clan are extremly rightwinged traditionals who are rather to break the will of a creature than to work with it together. American Natives had/have a better way to deal with wild horses. This no food or water is cruel.
