If 2 horses together can pull the same as 3 individual horses, I will assume the amount x number of horses can pull is s((x+1)/x), when s is the strength of one individual horse. If 1 horse weighs 1600lbs, and can pull 8000lbs, I will assume the average horse can pull 5w when w is the weight of the horse. Thus, the number of horses x you need to pull y number of horses can be represented by the equation y=5w((x+1)/x). Solving for x, we get x=(5w/y) - 1. This is, of course, assuming there is a linear relationship between horse weight and horse strength, and neglecting the weight of the trailer. Also, this math is almost certainly wrong.

Your math is unfortunately incorrect. If you have just one horse, then x is equal to 1. According to your formula, y should thus be equal to s * (1+1)/1 = 2 * s. We know that it should really be equal to s. The correct formula should be y = x * s * 1.5 ^ (x - 1). This new formula says that for each additional horse, every horse is 50% more efficient.

Horsepower is a unit of power, Joules are a unit of energy, and force is just force. Power is energy divided by time

Horse trailer weighs around 2400 lbs. Each trailer can house 4 horses. Not considering the wheels, two best friend horses could pull 4 trailers with a total of 14 horses. As far as I can figure ^^; and one horse could easily pull a trailer with three horses in it, but not four

Let's say you put 4 horses in the average horse trailer. Each weighs between 1,000 to 2,000-ish lbs. I'll use 2,000 because, what if they all ARE large, how many horses would you need to pull them? So 2,000 lbs x 4 horses = 8,000 lbs. If one horse can pull 8,000 lbs, technically you could do it in one. To be safe, though, using two (and having them with the capability of pulling 24,000 lbs) would be the best option in this scenario.
