Yeah, I went to school in Decatur, IL and very much remember my first Springfield Horseshoe. You walked down 5 steps to enter a dimly lit bar that served $3 pitchers of Budweiser, a pool table, and a jukebox with actual CDs. 5 songs for $1, and 50 cent pool. Sometimes I miss the midwest.

Springfield native here! Horseshoes are traditionally served with texas toast, burger, fries and yellow cheese sauce. The beer cheese is an inspired choice though, I’ll have to try that sometime. D’arcy’s Pint has the best shoes in town, I always get the buffalo chicken one. Also it’s very important to me that you all know that the smaller size is called a ponyshoe.

The absolute best horseshoe in Springfield can’t be bought anymore! It was at the Sportsman’s Lounge on the corner of Mason and Rutledge. The best cheese sauce in town! It was an experience especially back in the day when Heine Dahlkamp greeted you at the door. I swear that man kissed every woman on the cheek that walked in, and Gloria and Donna, they served up generous portions and kept us entertained, along with the regulars. It was awesome.

ALSO, Portillo's has the best Italian beef and Italian sausage sandwhiches ever! (They're dipped in gravy!!!) And you HAVE to get a Chocolate Cake Shake! Good on ya for making beer cheese instead of just regular cheese sauce. That's what really makes a horseshoe fab!

I was raised in a smallish highway/river town where the main diner place is called kozy korner and it has the BEST FOOD EVER. like they fry everything so amazingly and their sauces are divine. They fresh squeeze their OJ (they've got like a machine and the oranges are delivered daily and the oranges are all lining the walls and stuff and its so cool) and they make the best reubens! they have breakfast lunch and dinner food but i think its like they stop serving breakfast at 10 or something. You wanna make a dish there then you need to make the breakfast food of like hot cakes and it comes with maple syrup, whipped butter and your choice of eggs and meat. and this was like 10 dollars.

My mom is from Lincoln, Illinois and i grew up eating horseshoes(on rare occasion) while living in Florida. I was shocked whenbnone of my classmates ate them.

Damn....my grandfather has a saying "To eat is to live and to live is to eat" I still stand by that statement as a man trying to lose weight.......but damn I felt that I'm my stomach just by watching it........I'll enjoy it and then regret it in about an hour

Oh yeah, a shoe is definitely NOT for anyone who has an issue with food touching on their plate.

As a Quebecois, i have to recommend Poutine. Its delicious. French fries, with cheddar cheese and gravy. heat for 1 and a half minutes, or just about when the cheese gets gooey.

Grew up in the 217. Horsehoes are about the only thing i miss about the place. A good one (i prefer Buffalo chicken for my protein) with good meat, and the authentic cheese sauce is BOMB.
