I think the best thing I’ve gotten from this channel is the way I think about plants. I didn’t grow up with any gardening, and I didn’t think about things like the wind making plants thirsty or heat stress or cold hours that seem obvious in retrospect. It’s been really helpful. Thank you!

Omg those autumn moonstruck are gorgeous. I saw them just yesterday in a historic home garden near Lee University. I can’t believe a day later you’re showing them. I pulled over to see them, no joke. I couldn’t figure out from the road whether it was a rodadendron or an azalea. They had so many flowers that I knew it was some sort of encore azalea when I got close. Two houses down from that one there’s a formal garden going into another historic home. I can’t wait to see what they do. Gorgeous gardens left and right in that area of Tennessee.

Every time I plant a tree or shrub I find myself singing, “plant them high and they won’t die, plant them low and they won’t grow!” I have very clay soil and this lesson has been a savior for me. QUESTION I planted 3 soft caress mahonia in september. The tag said hardy 5 to 10 degrees F. They are brown sticks now and I keep hoping.I am in Portland Or zone 8b. we had two weeks of severe cold in Jan. Temps in the teens. snow and ice. I am wondering if the soft caress mahonia would be considered marginal in zone 8 and should have been planted in the spring as you talked about today. Might they come back from the root ball? My well established oregon Grape/ native mahonia aquifolium did absolutely fine and just finished flowering. Thanks for all your great information.
