This was a service call on a Hoshizaki ice machine that had a 3 beep safety caused by a low refrigerant charge. But it wasn't so easy to find due to some inaccurate information from the customer at first.

I've cleaned one of these Hoshizaki machines when I worked for DD. I was the only employee trusted (and willing) to do the work (and come in for a shift specifically for this one task). These units, fully cleaned with a good pre-filter system, can put out picture-perfect glass-clear ice cubes! I can only imagine what the insides look like on our Cornelius soda units with Manitowoc ice machines on top. If the HVAC system is any indication of how the rest of our equipment is maintained, I'll probably need to get in there and give it a thorough clean/sanitize. Sure, we're on a municipal water supply, but still... _Oh, goody!_ Well, it may be grunt work, but I don't mind dealing with the equipment, as long as I am able to devote my attention to it (no interruptions). "It only happens first-thing in the morning" probably means "has been beeping for hours overnight while nobody was there." "Getting tired of pushing the button" is a rather annoying attitude to have, it's one thing to do multiple resets to get through a shift or until the service person can get there, but every time you push a reset button you are forcing the machine to repeat what led to the issue in the first place, and it can result in damage (and further expense). Then again, Common Sense ain't all that common. 16:52 always happens when I'm trying to work on my car. 31:46 - As someone in food service, I thank you for that. Sure, it's not your job, but like you said, it ends up being more convenient for both you and your client. And, your client's staff will remember your conscientiousness. (Oh how I've longed to use that word in a sentence for YEARS!)

And yes, I've been watching these thru the end mostly - I'm just a software engineer but I love learning how things work in general, from elevators and air-conditioners to LED lights and USB chargers. No plans to go doing that stuff myself but it's quite interesting to get a better understanding of what is involved in many of these things to keep them working properly.

Here is a small tip: before resetting the machine, take a video! This allow you to show exactly what it was doing, and compare things from last week to now and see if thing change too. Like in this case, they would have recorded the 3 beeps.

I ran restaurants back in the 90's it wasn't a matter of the repair cost but a matter of not having Ice. Or having to buy Ice from a supplier at a HUGE cost. So I can very easily see that point of view but now Doing HVAC/R for the last near decade I can also see your point of view. Great videos.

I like the long videos!! Customer information is 50/50. Sometimes they give you all the clues you need. Last week I was changing a thermostat for a true prep table that was freezing product, and the chef says this is the 5th one you guys are putting in. Had he told me that the first time, I would have investigated before ordering the new thermostat. So I found the old thermostat bulb not only kinked but not inserted all the way into the copper sleeve because the copper sleeve is rusted inside and possibly has parts of the old cap tube preventing insertion. If not inserted all the way, the tstat will never sense. So in this case, only way to proceed is to get trues electronic version of the thermostat and install it. Its the only way unless you wanna cut out the evaporator, get access to the right side of the coil and remove the copper sleeve and insert a new one.

I love your videos. I’m not even into refrigeration business, but I consider them really interesting (due the way you walk us trough the process). I ran a genset business and the procedures around here are the same... Always big picture diagnose (great line). One small thing to improve (in my opinion) are those loooooong brasing parts... I tend to skip big chuncks of them because it’s always the same... one or two good view of two joints would be better than 15 minutes of soldering 10 + connections... Keep the good work! Salutes from Brazil!

I've got more experience in electrical and I'm very good at it but plumbing I'm good but I make mistakes like everyone else. I love how you show your mistakes bc I've watched other videos where they cut out their mistakes and I hate that. Keep doing your great job and don't worry about what these couch watchers say.

I used to cut out rather than unsweat as many components on ice machines as possible to avoid carbon and scale in the system. Those checks, TEVs, and solenoids are so prone to sticking. It's one instance I would have to bite my lip and ignore the OCD when a line wasn't perfectly straight to factory looks.

Filling the ice buckets is a sign of a true tech, just like not leaving your ladder/cart in the middle of hallway. Seems simple enough but if you learn anything you are the intruder and your job is to get out of their way, just because they are paying you to be there does not mean its a job site. I don't know how many times I have moved my teams carts and some guys will never get it and that sucks.

I stumbled across this and the title intrigued me. I am near 60 and disabled. I used to help people out by phone. I haven't in years because technology has passed me by. When I stopped working in refrigeration there was very little digital. I mostly installed grocery stores. Your fieldpiece gage is a work of art. LOL Have you ever thought about doing a video on just the equipment you use and maybe how it has changed in say the past 30 years. You also might want to make another video on your service vehicle and contents and why. Another youtuber Logger Wade, did one on "Whitey" his service truck. That was picked up by a magazine and they did a good story with several pictures and 4 or 5 pages. He got a ton of free publicity and a bunch of subscribers. I personally would love to see all the new stuff. You posted links to some of it on Amazon. I looked a lot up. Thanks for that. Now that I know the maker of that set I will look them up. Good luck!

I used to work at a gas station during my student time and they had a restaurant built in. Walk in freezer, cold rail, beer cooler, cold rail and a whole bunch of coolers all hooked into two heat pumps. If something goes bad the employees (which was me in that case) tried to reset it before giving my boss a headache at 2 in the morning. I put a note in the shift transfer notes (which everyone is supposed to read at the beginning of the shift) and a sticky note onto the fuse saying when it blew. About five days later the entire system was down because as it turns out everyone just kept reseting that fuse once per shift ignoring my notes. Turned out the system was shorting out some heaters every 8 hours blowing the main breaker... In general i tell people not to touch anything until they have at least called :) (im not in HVAC tho, just like to know how things work and had to read some principles up for work once and found it to be interesting)

The odds of me ever needing to know any of this information is slim to none but just in case i've got hours of trouble shooting banked. lol As for fault resetting i run into that all the time at work. running a large 3 part metal forming line we've got hundreds of sensors that could fault and people just love to take the lazy way out and keep resetting it till it causes the repair to take hours longer than it should've if they would've looked at it the second or third time it went off. luckily all 3 systems keep a 24hr log of faults.

CNY HVAC-BMS I’ve seen those school districts spend big bucks on a traulsen double door and then get their Maintanance guys strip out the wiring for it, put a mechanical timer and t’stat on them, basically trashing new high dollar equipment. They didn’t want to pay anybody that knows anything about hvacr to do it correctly, and still don’t.

I feel your pain, but I had to laugh a little when you found out it was three beeps. I always take what the customer says under advisement, but never trust the data to be correct.. If I don't see it with my own eyes, hear it with my own ears, it ain't true. I also find it irritating that any equipment made in the last 20 years thats microprocessor controlled isn't designed to store a history of error codes. There's no excuse for it.

You should try to use two headed tip or C tip for brazing in such tight places. I use small two headed Gloor propane/oxigen torch and I am very happy with it. Perfect for job like this and nothing is burned. Flame is many times smaller and pipe/fitting is evenly heated around whole circumference. Also, gas /oxigen consumption is many times smaller for same result.

Please, please, please, don’t tell the customer to reset Circuit boards or reset buttons... there’s a very logical and commonsense explanation to why there is reset buttons on the circuit boards especially ice machines.. You’re absolutely right though it takes us technicians who are going to charge the customer water money to troubleshoot ..I get that point of it. But it also makes it hard to diagnose in the job and him much more harder and more difficult when the customer reset a circuit board in your preemptive troubleshooting is to go on a 1 beep! And, should be at three beep. I always tell my customers if it needs reset please call me immediately and tell me on the phone with them in front of the machine and listening in the background how long it’s beeping before I tell them yes or no to reset it or not.. therefore I hear it with my own ears on the phone with them on the phone before attempting to reset it.. and is as well as a safety standpoint to because if it is a circuit breaker or a safety electrical safety somebody can get seriously injured and hurt and as well as it can do more damage to the machine and cost the customer more money.. unnecessarily, I am in The business of making money. at the same time I don’t want to break myself in the meantime.. or have the cu the over the calls because of it... All I’m saying is if they are to reset the button have them on the phone with you and listen in the background or have them put the phone up to the machine before resetting

Hello once again great work. Just a comment about welding. I see u unseating fittings which is great but trust me u will have a fire or get burnt eventually if u keep doing that. I will usually unsweat things after making a cut and removing the component . Your distributor could have been easily removed with 2 cuts . Make the cuts close to the original welded fitting. Then remove the component and complete all welds in a comfortable safe location . Cool her down then unsweat or use coupling to reinstall by making only 2 welds in the cabinet. You did a great job standing on your head to weld that in .Trust me you will love me again for this trick.Happy shooting brother. I do have a theory about your code as well. Let me know if u want to hear it lol. I could be wrong though as I need to know what code 3 was u didn't tell me . 😎

When I have customer cars that come into the shop I work for and the customer says " I disconnected the battery and cleared the codes from the car" My response is well take it out drive till the light comes back on. So i can figure out what its not happy about. Or I can guess and spend ALOT of your money and accomplish nothing. I hate those.

I have the same in computer support... someone tries all their own fixes and makes it harder for me as the tech to fix! Sometimes, it does simplify, as they have tried everything that could be tried!

On the video that leaky valve looks like it was leaking from the side as well but that might have just been the light glinting off the copper.

3 beeps on a Hoshizaki ice machine basically means that just about anything can be wrong. That's the one beep/error code that I never would want to hear. Even the Hoshi factory representative hated the 3 beeps alarm code.

Fun fact, when you're flowing while brazing the nitrogen attracts heat to the joint your working on.

The reason there were only 2 beeps is because before the third beep had time to play, the breaker was already off.

From the camera angle, it looks like you're torch is extremely close to that wall. Is it made of something non-flammable that you weren't concerned about the tip of the flame setting fire to it, or was it farther away than it looks in the video? I've only done some DIY repairs for water pipes with a propane torch (I presume from the dual oxygen+fuel yours is oxy-acetylene) but one of my biggest concerns is always where the flame might go, what it might touch that is past the thing I need to heat.

When I find those hot gas valves leaking I change the strainers as well. I make it easier on my self by doing all the difficult joints outside the machine. Cut pipe in different spots and use swaging tool so I dont have to have to braze at a awkward angle around all that armaflex and wiring. Also had question on 3 beeps alarm , reset machine and ruled out charge as issue by recovering and weighing back in factory charge. Cycle times on freeze are still up near 50 min, with 70 degrees water and 87 degree ambient. Remote unit . Pressures are on target with spec guide. Would you suspect poor performing Txv?

Evap tube sheet separation?? Txv's in my experience fail flooding on these machines most of the time..... and or dont feed at all due to a bad powerhead.

I am currently diagnosing a Hoshizaki cleaned checked for leaks and proper operation only problem found a little low charged to proper pressure machine runs for two weeks no problem then faults 3 beeps and customer reset two more weeks befor faults I’m perplexed charge is within guidelines I’m leaning towards a malfunctioning txv but have issues with the time length before failure. Any thoughts???

Dammit, BE SPECIFIC! He meant "IT beeps once a day" "one time a day"... "how many times does it beep"... once a day!... that is a correct answer to a vague question you should have asked "When it beeps, how many beeps does it let out?" I am an aeronautics instrumentation engineer, this mistake... CAN NOT HAPPEN in my profession, I would end up having a couple hundred peoples lives on my conscience! ALWAYS BE SPECIFIC!
