This video discusses the use of the Hossfeld Universal Bender, Model No. 1 and focuses on the eye bolt bending setup. It is intended as a reference to aid students learning in the Tyler metal shop learning metal fabrication skills.

Pricey, but a tool you’ll love! Worlds of difference between the Hossfeld and these cheap, Chinese, smaller knock-offs!

Great storage solution for the bender. That reference book is the bible of that machine. I see those in many blacksmithing shops, but it seems like few people use it. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏼

Rob, please do not stop making videos for students and young employees learning how to use metal shop equipment. You do an excellent job at explaining the small details that most knowledgeable experienced guys would assume and forget to include. I am an instructor at a trade school in Buckeye, AZ that helps high school students prepare for the work force. If this old retired guy, that is giving back to youth, could help in a small way... please listen to yourself and count the Ugh's and mid sentence stops you use. It makes it difficult to maintain the thought processes you are portraying. I worked hard at it in my younger years and became a public speaker at conferences in numerous venues. Once again PLEASE keep up the great work you are doing, it is so needed.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, Doug! I teach a metal fabrication class to art students about once a year, and I started making these videos a few years back in what little spare time I had (I also work a full-time job in a fabrication shop). I the idea was to get some info on our specific equipment available as a learning reference and to cover the basic things that become common hurdles to our students. They seem to be a big help to those students who are most motivated to help themselves. I’m glad to see the videos are finding some use outside of our school, and I plan to continue producing more soon. Most all of these are unscripted and shot on the fly in single takes with minimal editing. I’ll try to be more mindful of my delivery in future shoots. I try to improve the production quality with each new video (but finding the time is always an issue). Thanks again!

Thank you for making these videos. I have a hossfeld and the most common thing I use it for is hooks of various sizes such as what you demonstrated here. Would you consider doing a video demonstration of bending angle iron on it. I see you have the dies. I would love to see a good demonstration of both the “easy way” and the “hard way”. I have struggled to get good results with angle iron from the user manual alone. I have never seen anyone else do it. Thanks again

Happy to help, Ernie. I shot a bunch of footage on the machine a year ago, and have a rough edit of the angle Iron flange out (the 'easier' of the two). Stay tuned and I'll try to get it wrapped up soon. I never shot any footage of our flange inward set-up in action (bending it the 'hard' way). It's tricky to get good results when bending flange in; the metal is trying to compress and shrink the flange when your bending it in toward the center. In my experience it would rather twist and corkscrew as you go and that set-up doesn't use the same crushing action as the flange out. But I'll see about pulling those dies out and experimenting more over the holiday to see if I can get some better results with it. Bending flange out is easier on this machine because you're stretching the flange. The Hossfeld is well designed for keeping the angle flat, because it's crushing that flange between two flat surfaces with almost as much force as you're using to bend the radius. I've also had pretty good results with their flat stock edgeways radius bending setup using the same inner radius blocks and the B50 master die. You just need their "Edgebend Die", and the pins and spacers appropriate for the material you're working with.

Hi Rob. I am a university student attempting to build a sofa with a steel pipe frame. My university has one of these machines (Hossfeld Universal Bender) but no one seems to know how to use it, it’s been around so long. Would you be available to possibly do a video call with me and give me a tutorial on how to use it specifically for my needs? It would be greatly appreciated.

Hey man was wondering where did you get the pusher dye tool or where can I get one ? And how can I make a eye bolt with a compact bender ?

From Hossfeld Mfg. they have a crazy number of attachments for this bender. Be aware that the attachments for the Hossfeld #2 are much too big to use on any of the compact benders! You’re comparing apples and oranges!

Hey Taylor, The manual came with the machine. One of the past school technicians put together the binder and added to two colorized pages on the angle Iron flange out instructions. If you own a Hossfeld, I would call them up and see if they'll send you a copy. The official one is printed on sturdy stock and has good clear illustrations and images. Otherwise I have an OK scan I might be able to e-mail but the images are a bit blown out.
