I love hostels. 1. Spork spoon and fork combo 2. Small sharp knife. Some hostels have poor equipment. This is also helpful on the road when you want to peel fruit. 3. Tupperware...I was given a collapsible Tupperware by a fellow hosteller recently. Takes up so little room. 4. Free food area... look before you travel to the shop. 5. I have used my old t shirt as a pillow case before. Sheet sleeping bag is essential or the sarong. 6. Sarong... just brilliant. 7. I take a waterproof draw string bag... this can be worn on my back during the day, be taken into hostel showers, for laundry and be like the handy tote bag. 8. Bull dog clips... 9. Universal plug. 10. Duct tape.... not necessarily for hostels but travel in general. I have mended trousers, suitcases and even a coach window with it. I have travelled for many years... Thanks for a very useful vlog on a great subject. 👍✈️👍🚂

What do you mean by free food area?
@julieeggleton9743
@julieeggleton9743 Жыл бұрын
This is usually a labelled box or shelf. People daily leave food they don't need. Maybe they are heading home or just don't want to carry it. It normally has salt, often pasta or rice. I have even found beer or chocolate on occasion. I look to see what is there before I go shopping. There may even be free food in the fridge. Hostels tell guests to label food including date of departure. Using free food keeps the costs down for sure and is environmentally sound. 🌎🌎

In China, often the toilets at bus stations were gross! The floor was wet, the hook on the door was broken off, and the door lock was gone. Now I always travel with a small Ziploc bag that has in it: 1. Toilet paper 2. two "S" hooks to hang over the door 3. a portable door lock from Amazon.

I'm about to go on a trip that'll make me stay in various hostels around Europe, so honestly having your old video and this one, too, advised to me one after the other has been a blessing. Thanks a lot for the tips!

I am not sure about urban backpacking, I am a woods backpacker and bikepacker, but on one bike trip this summer we used para cord to 1. Tie our bikes upright inside a U-Haul, 2. Tie a pannier to my rack when the bungee broke, and 3. As clothesline every night. So glad I insisted we bring it along. :)

I once found it very useful to keep small/thin items, like your toothbrush, in a pencil case. Then you can see your items more clearly when you're looking for something

I used my microfiber towel as a curtain in some hostels. I like the largest size for coverage. For a sleep sheet I got a sleeping bag liner that has insect shield (Sea to Summit brand). I would also bring a “Heroclip” which is a multi functional carabiner.

I loved the old video! I've seen it last year during the very first stages of planning my journey and I still remember most of the things you mentioned because although I've consumed countless hours of similar videos I find yours to be the most informative 🥰

I travel with a RyanAir cabin luggage, so it’s a constant struggle to save space 😄 Here’s what I found useful: - Bring solid soap and solid shampoo. Use the solid soap also for laundry, so then washing powder is not a must-have. - Bring a small gym towel instead of a terry towel - it saves a lot of space. Also bring a plastic bag, because if you put it in your bag wet, everything in your bag will smell like 🤮. - If you’re like me and work while traveling, you’ll spend your days at coffee shops, sitting by a table with a plug. You can charge your phone there and you don’t need a power bank. - If you’re traveling with a laptop, buy a small charger like HyperJuice. You can charge both your laptop and your phone from it. It saves a lot of space in your backpack.

re: towel, I have a full bath size packtowel that folds down to the size of like half a small paperback novel, you can get them at MEC and REI, any camping store. They are microfibre, dry fast and are still full size. def has been useful over the years!

I stayed in a hostel in Cape Town some years ago, naive, thinking that it would a regular cheap hotel... it was cheap, but I was mortified to find out that I was sharing a shower with random people, women, that was the fastest shower I had ever taken! I think they had a chuckle afterwards because I was not so liberal. Then I had this host lady that kept on wanting to come into my room and random hours of the night. That was my first and last hostel. Never doing it again.

Bring a lightweight dry bag to wash clothes in. Also doubles as a laundry bag. Bring a 65W+ gallium nitride (light weight) charger that can power/charge both your phone and your laptop. Bring a 10 foot USB C cable to go from the charger to your laptop or phone. Yes, that long. Often the plug will be on the other side of the room and only a 10 foot cable will reach.

Very informative, and although this is the first time I'm staying in a hostel, I'm obviously very well prepared already, as I already have most of it!! Although I like the idea of a pillow case 🤔 A few things I learnt from my trip to Thailand in 2022, was to use a packet of tissues instead of taking some toilet paper, they work just as well and are also a lot cheaper. I also bought some tiny hand soap pellets that are very small and create soap when put in water. I found these very useful for some of the public toilets, as very few of them had soap. I also took a set of camping cutlery, as if you're at a place that speaks very little english, it's hard to explain that you need a fork and spoon. Something I also learned a while ago, was to take a power extender with a UK plug, then you only need one travel adapter.

People say paracord bc of how multipurpose and compact it is. If you double over a length of paracord you hung up and twist it until it’s tight you now have one of those pegless clothes lines so you can throw out that bit of kit. Then, of course, it’s your bunk curtain line, you can replace any broken draw strings or your shoe laces with it if they break. Etc.

They make sleeping bag line out of fleece. I used that for camping trip in the summers as a sheet and blanket in one. I assume it would be useful in the hostel.

Hi I've never stayed in a hostel before, I came across your channel while looking for essential travel items in hostels. I wanted to try something new to push myself outside of my comfort zone. Being shy makes it difficult for me to interact with people. Can you do a video based on your travels and experiences for the top apps and websites or advice s that help me to meet new people while traveling or just travel in general? That would be really helpful.

about the lock. I doubt they tried every combination for it would mean they tried 10000 different codes. I think that was just a coincidence and as you stated yourself, if you are way long enough at some point youll lose it even if you have more probably.

If the hostel has a locker, you should have a lock for the locker so that you don't have to worry about this.
