Hi! I loved your reaction and how much you are really trying to understand it. And I have to say you basically got the essence of it! Malamente is the 1st song in her Mal Querer album. This is important bc her album was written in chapters like a book bc it is loosely based on a Spain medieval story about a woman who gets into a toxic relationship. So in the first chapter, the woman allows herself to be seduced by this guy. Her gut tells her the guy is no good for her, but he courts her with material things and she goes ahead with the relationship anyway. In the video she shows this pursuit with the guy literally chasing her at the start and later with the matador (note how her gaze changes in the three bike scenes). She's caught in both instances, but in both the result is deadly (car runs her over and the matador has the sword in the final run). This gives you an idea of what's to come in her future. The beginning, where she shows the boys training to be matadors, is an allegory to show how generations of men are taught to treat women as prey. The virgin (in the tatoo) weeps in this knowledge. In one scene Rosalía highlights how some men see women as discardable objects when her 'dead body' is lifted by several men using a forklift truck and 'dumped' into a freezer truck with other women (this is normally what would happen to bulls after they are killed in the ring). But Rosalía (the singer not the character) shows defiance with her dancing (at one point you can see a dancer with a top saying 'Bye Boy'). In the final scenes you'll see a guy in purple. He is dressed in a traditional catholic robe used for penance during Holy Week in Easter (originally from the middle ages). But he is also on a skateboard. This supposedly shows that who she thought was a cool, modern guy turned out to be a conservative, traditional guy. Throughout the colours that you notice most are red and yellow, which are the colours of the Spanish flag which Rosalía uses a lot throughout her videos, and I feel is more about showing pride from where she is from. I'm sorry I've gone on so long! You could write an essay on every Rosalía video! I love how full of meaning they are and how artistic she is. I truly hope this will spur you on to continue reacting to this album and her other work which is fantastic. For your next one may I suggest the 2nd song in the album Que No Salga La Luna live in Lollapalooza Chile as there's no real video to the song. Alternatively, you could try Aunque es de Noche video which is wonderful. But just keep in mind that her Mal Querer album was written by her as her final year university project. Who gets international awards (incl. Grammy's) for their Uni project?!

Your comment is one of the best, on point descriptions that i have seen on YT so far, thank you for sharing all this cultural details! During my studies i did a course in cross cultural communication and that sparked my interest to learn more about such rich cultures as yours, unfortunately so much that get's lost in translation or better in not knowing the backgrounds. I literally had the same idea and already searched for an appropriate live version of "Don't let the moon rise". It would be awesome to go through the whole album in the correct order, i think no one has done that before. Adding your knowledge to it and this would be a rich journey, that would open this treasure more to interested people outside the latin/spain community. An "El Mal Querer - English review" in the title and that could reach many folks that are struggling with their interpretation. It's easy to overlook something if you don't know what to look for... if that makes sense. Now, how could i convince both of you, maybe ¿Por favor y pleaaaaase? 😊 Anyways, thanks guys and gals, enjoyed it much! 💙

@@rakon8496 OMG thank you so much! I 'discovered ' Rosalía during lockdown and haven't looked back. Her voice hooked me but then I was just amazed by her intelligence. It's rare nowadays to find an artist that puts just as much effort into the visuals as they do into their music. It's very worthwhile going through this album and her other work as you'll find them as rich in symbolic and artistic imagery as this one with a few exceptions. I will be more than happy to comment on future videos as long as 'Hot Mess Reacts'' doesn't mind. Hopefully others might contribute too. I hope @Hotmessreacts does indeed do more Rosalía reactions. I will definitely be here for them 😊

Wow you’re amazing! Doing so many things at the same time!! hugs! and yes Rosie is INCREDIBLE also if you find her powerful just wait until you watch HER LIVE PERFORMANCES she’s a monster on stage ❤️❤️ (the song makes more sense if you listen to the full album but you got it right! There’s also a lot of symbolism on Rosalias music, everything means something specific which is very cool, and yes she’s been dancing since she was 3 years old)

What a treat, sunday morning coffee and then the joy of discovering your reaction. 😊 I like the pace you are doing with pausing and that you really have to add something and you made some points that i didn't come up with even i have watched it a lot. Spanish/latin has such a different, rich culture and is much more expressive. And this different kinds of beats and switch ups... 💙 When she has her ballerinas/dancers with her she is syncing often with them, quite impressive when she sings along... She performs on stage exceptionally well, and is a great entertainer, of course no playback. Thank you!

Amazing and very insightful reaction to the lead single of El Mal Querer. I can’t add much to Alba Martinez’s post, enough to say EMQ will take you on a journey. An absolute beauty of an album. Yes, she has a background of sorts in dancing, (not professionally). She took flamenco dancing lessons for years as a child and later combined those with music. She focussed more on music from the age of 16 when she commenced her formal training in flamenco singing. However she never really lost interest in dance as it’s one of her passions. Her debut album, 2017’s Los Angeles, consisted of a more stripped back acoustic interpretation of classic songs belonging to traditional Spanish music genres. So her stage production of that album was very minimalist, yet quite striking. Her vision for El Mal Querer was completely different and it was very full on with elaborate choreography, so after a hiatus she reengaged with dance as an integral part of her act.
