It's been a couple weeks since the last growing update! Check out how the potatoes, corn & green beans are growing. It's been very hot in Maine this week, it's time to start thinking about irrigation.

When I was involved with a summer cadet fire academy over a number of years, we made up half strength Gatorade and made them drink a lot. We had no cadets making heat exhaustion trips to Rutland medical center those years. If you get overheated dunk your forearms into 5 gal pails of room temp water. It sucks the heat out of you quickly but not too quickly. Be safe.

Here in eastern KY, we have all but given up on a garden. Crows pull seeds up when planted, rabbits and turtles eat young plants, bugs eat on the plants until maturity and then either deer, raccoon, fox, coyote, crows will eat anything just before it’s ready to harvest.

Crops looking good Shane & Molly , I used to deal with ELK in my potato crops . They would play in the fields and disturb a circle playing about 20 or 30 ft in size . As they walked about the field they would damage tubers with their feet . One time the State wildlife brought me 2 Cougar hides to lay on the ground to deter the elk ... Scare the Elk , not so much they used those pelts like door mats ... To add insult to injury I had to return those hides after a month . No way were they going to take a chance on me hanging those old skins on my wall . My test for good moisture was grab a hand full and close my hand . If it made a solid ball showing the line print of my palm it was about 80 % saturated , good for Russets . I cringe every time I see Shane dig in under those spuds . Not much of a problem with their present size but nothing hurts worse than potato skin shoved under the finger nail .

So Shane is right the potato blossoms don't have anything to do with production..but if the blooms get pollinated they produce little berries which contain seed that breeders use to grow new potatoes in a tissue culture setting

potatoes are 'tubers' (reproduction by cloning), and also flower to produce seeds - which can become potato producing plants.

Nice trial with the new potato varieties. The number of tubers present now says little about the number of tubers that will become large later. Several tubers are still going to fall off.

7:00 i don't think too because the actual fruit is the little (poisonous) green Berry which appears after flowering, not the potato that gets harvested. I have 2 Varietys, one is blossoming too the other isn't yet. How do you fertilize your potatoes? Mine get calcium cyanamide( because of the wireworms), ammonium sulphate and potassium pre tillage and again potassium and urea+Sulphate pre hilling. Greetings from Germany

Always educational and interesting to watch. I like your magic trick getting out of the tractor. The Idaho government shut down the water to 500,000 acres of potatoes. Of course that will destroy the farmers and their communities. I expect potatoe prices to go up.
