Hot Wheels Maxi Taxi Restoration - This old 1976 Flying Colors series Red Line Maxi Taxi casting came in the mail recently. It has been kid painted, it pretty worn, had some odd chunks out of the base…but other than that, wasn’t too bad lololol At least the glass, other than having some paint on it, was in decent shape. #hotwheels #redline #maxitaxi

Sometimes we pay so much attention to the real classic Redlines of the late 60's, that we forget there were some very cool castings and designs well into the mid-late 70's. This is one of them. Nice revival. The yellow really pops. Well done!

That's so true Joe! When you really look at all of the Redline castings, there are a lot of them that seem to get overlooked in favor of the Sweet 16. I have another Redline on my bench right now - poor little beat to hell casting from the same source as the Maxi Taxi...and it had a crack in the metal base that didn't go well lol.

Lovely. I like this Olds 442. And Im a fan of deep dish. Maybe its the era we grew up in with deep dish Cragar and Centerline rims being all the rage. Those meant the drivers were serious about pink slip drags on the BLVD. 😂

Thanks Don! Maybe that is it - I know some people hate the deep dish wheels but maybe it's what we grew up liking that influences it. Just like I hate stanced wheels today...it makes no sense to me lol

The deep dishes look good on this casting 👍. I’m still at the stage of restoring them exactly how they came from the factory, so I don’t even think of trying stuff like that. Looking good, my friend!

I think the last ones were Hurst Olds with the gold trim over white and Hurst logos. Brillant castings

Decals were nice and i you did a good job with the fine details of restoration. It really came out beautifully 👍 Its like when plastic surgery goes well and makes you look younger instead of a thirsty cat. Love the deep dish wheels lol.

GREAT SCREAMING GOAT that's a great restoration! I know the yellow may not quite match for the purists, and the wheels are different in that they are an older version. I just want to say that in full size automobiles that your choices I would consider as "period correct modifications". Deep dish deniers be "darned", it looks like we would've wanted it to. It definitely looks better than what you started with, and you saved it from a parental scrap-heap! Have fun with your toys!!!

That's such a cool restoration! One thing that doesn't make much sense for me is to make a taxicab out of an Olds Cutlass coupe, since there were a bunch of sedans around.

Great restoration, Jim! In the new year, I plan to do a series of Redline restos, so it’s good to see one pop up in my feed. I think you made some good choices patching the widened holes and putting on deep-dish tires. It all worked. And don’t have a Silva Drinking Challenge (TM) card, but you had Gauzy, JB Weld, Flitz, and SuperKleen in this video. Some who play are no doubt sleeping it off now. 😂

It's always fun to mix some Redlines into the builds - they're actually somewhat relaxing in an odd way since if it's a "straight" restoration, it eliminates some of the guesswork (what color should I paint it, should I put decals, if so, what decals...and so on). They do have some unique challenges over newer castings (getting parts, freakin' tiny posts, damage) but are really a blast to do...unless it's the one on my bench right now that I've been yelling at LOL

A great restoration, pretty sure that taxi will get you where you're going with time to spare, just might want to make sure you're buckled in and have sick bag at the ready, ha ha ha.

im not sure as i havent seen it in a while, but im pretty sure the maxi taxi that was my dads has some slight holes in the base as well. they might not be as bad as this example but i swear i remember it looking similar. my dad probably wanted it to look more like a circle track car than a taxi lol.

You're remembering it correctly - it has some small rectangular holes by each axle...which is what I was trying to recreate here. The more I think about the damage to the base of this one, it's almost like someone tried to break into the base using those holes...like the posts holding it together were pop--ons on something lol. I'm sure it would make a better circle track car than a taxi, so your Dad was on the right track lol

Whenever I use that clear. I do a light wet sand. And light buff. It does it down just enough to make it look factory. Experiment with it.
