The Compton rapper opened up about the state of hip hop music on deeper level and explained where it needs to go. He also gave a surprising opinion on the Macklemore and those Grammy text messages but the thing that stood out most was when Kendrick discussed his new Outkast-esque record "i".

@@adriangunderson-smith1698 Still applies?? If someone 'goes pop' is that not implying that the majority of their music is going to be pop records? I mean of course that still means they can make 'non-pop' records but it technically still applies since Kendrick Lamar does not have to 'go pop' to make records like humble or loyalty. I just think Kendrick Lamar is rapper period, mainly because he has touched and rapped on so many different types of sounds. It honestly doesn't matter to me though.

+il tizio I would say TPAB is the most important album in mainstream HipHop. In terms of replay ability, the albums you mention have more except for Testuo & Youth, I wasn't really feeling that. GKMC, i feel like is a much more accessible album but in terms of importance, lyrics, story telling, reality, TPAB is up there with "illmatic," The Infamous" Its very incredible album with a unique production that I've never heard of.

What Kendrick says from 27:00 onward is too true. That's the problem with a lot of rap music today. Sure you may find it entertaining, but it's creating a culture, a way of thinking, in black communities that no one will ever hear of or see. I've already seen the influence of it on my peers from high school. How they'd see selling dope and having hoes was what made you cool, and how being in gangs was what you were supposed to do. Dropping out of school, theivery, they thought it all made them better as people. They'd try to imitate the rappers way of life as best they could, but they missed the part where the rapper is getting paid to do all of it while they're paying with their money and their lives possibly. Hearing Kendrick speak about this himself has made me gain even more respect for him than I've already had.

MegaMkoi Now don't get me wrong, there are some individuals who were raised in the hood and who've seen what the hood does and expresses that as an obstacle that they've overcome, but if that is all they can talk about -- they shouldn't expect to be relevant and respected for too long. Getting lift from your hood alone without skill is disrespectful to the art. And that "gangsta by association" shit is what them rap clowns do. Far too many rap clowns out, know what I mean?

Regardless of what people say, this dude has had an impact in hip hop for a while now and its because of the music. Of course internet trolls are gonna say dumb shit but that's what they do. Kendrick Lamar is 27yrs old and he has some wisdom. He's wise beyond his years. I can tell he's been through some real tough situations. I appreciate that through his music he opens up and speaks from the heart. Real talk with his Good Kid, M.A.A.D. city album it reminded me of Snoop and Dre's The Chronic album. When that album came out I was like what the hell am I listening to? I've never heard anything like that and it had me so hyped. That's how Kendrick's album made me feel. I really dig Kendrick. He's doing something different and that's what's up.

Kendrick comes out with a song with a super positive message and that makes him a sellout? This generation is fucked. And it's not like he hasn't made songs like this in the past. Fuck your ethnicity, heaven and hell, now or never etc...all those songs from his earlier projects had an upbeat positive vibe to it. I don't understand the hate the "I" track has been getting. I really don't.

All lies people find inspiration in all types of music. Music is inspiration in it self. Cole, kendrick & even macklemore or in a position where they don't really have to compromise their music to sell records. But it's a lot of rappers that rap about the same things they do & nobody cares. A lot of rappers do trap, gangsta & party music but still do music with substance. They aren't the only ones trying to inspire people.

Half of the interview, Ebro tries to act like Uncle Ruckus, Charlemagne. Smh. Kendrick is going to have a career like Nas and Drake is going to have a career like Jay Z. I understand what Kendrick is saying, but how can black people keep supporting rapper who always raps about materialistic things or high ticket prices they can't afford? Rappers who want be on the Grammys, but don't come to the BET Awards, How many of the rappers perform at HBCUs, but you see them donating money to USC Berkley like they don't have enough money already. All l'am saying is this new generation of artists make it hard to be loyal to them cus they never support or give back to the hood once they make it.

Very unlikely. Jay-Z had classic albums by the time his 4th LP was released. Drake has none. Nas would never have made a record like "I" as well during that period in his career. They're both going to form their own paths.

The best out right now. 1. Kendrick Lamar 2. Big K.R.I.T. 3. J. Cole 4. Joey Bada$$ 5. Childish Gambino *Enjoyment wise. Who's your top 5?
@caleyear01
@caleyear01 9 жыл бұрын
If this list is a list based of lyricism then it's terrible. Childish Gambino does not have good lyrics. His lyrics could've been written by a kid in elementary school. If you're referencing Rugrats and Ariel Pink in your music you're not on top of the game. His punch lines are pathetic and he constantly is bragging about how black he isn't and how he is trying to gain respect for it. Not to mention Donald says he wants to put away with hip hop stereotypes while he talks about how he gets women constantly in all of his music. "Asian girls everywhere, UCLA, You See Me bae"...are you serious???
@jeremydiesel7805
@jeremydiesel7805 9 жыл бұрын
Ok first off, Donald never said he wasn't black quiet the opposite heard "Hold you down" or "Black faces" off of Royalty. Also him liking Asian girls isn't a problem heard of Jhene Aiko? He also likes white, latino, even BLACK girls yes!!!! He doesn't really speak of it on record but yeah. Anyway Gambino is very good lyrically they're is hidden meaning in a lot of his lines as for muscial taste LaRel's musical preference I actually agree with with the exception of Kendrick at #1 and J.Cole at #3 swap Cole for 1 and Kendrick #2 and that's basically my list. So yeah everyone has different musical proclavities but we shouldn't judge, we're all humans on God's green earth. Peace. Stay Blessed y'all.

Artists have a platform. We should make them accountable for the energy they release. Kendrick is socially aware of the lack of connection in modern day mainstream music. He should be up there in the top 5 rappers currently this decade in the mainstream but signing to Atlantic ended up being a mistep. That said, Lupe comes off as envious towards Kendrick because he probably truly believes he should be in a similar spot.

"There's nothing new under the sun." That is so refreshing to hear a musician admit that. Everyone is so quick to act like it's a crime to not be completely original. But it's damned near impossible. It's all been done. You're just putting your own spin on something that came before you. I love it. The more I hear and see from this dude, the more I wanna hear and see.
