I was looking for a cheap hotel in Midtown Manhattan that was close to Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Looking on Travelocity and Priceline, I saw that Hotel Pennsylvania was offering a competitive rate. The deal got even better when I visited Hotel Penn's website, where they throw in a few freebies for booking direct. The grand Art Deco lobby is amazing, as are the photos of Hotel Pennsylvania from years gone by. There are several shops and restaurants located right on the Hotel Pennsylvania property. If you want to venture out, there are many restaurants, bars, and shopping options located nearby. The Hotel Pennsylvania is in a great location - the subway is close by, and many tourist attractions are in walking distance. Watch the video for the full review!

Stunning that a hotel that large sends you down the block for breakfast. When it opened it had multiple restaurants. Wow.

So sad to see the hotel closed, visited NYC this week for the first time in over 21 years, and I snapped some photos of the old hotel in-case it does get torn down. I just wish I could've experienced it once. Thanks for posting this -- its now a part of history.

Couldn't agree more, Sam. With a little investment, Vornado could have turned the Hotel Penn into the 5-star property it used to be. Sad that they want to replace it with a glass and steel skyscraper. Glad you got some photos though. Thanks for watching and happy holidays!

So sad to hear that the Hotel Penn is being demolished. We stayed there the very first time I'd ever been to NYC (in 2019) and it was right across from Madison Square Gardens, which was holding the event we were attending. We really enjoyed our stay there! Staff were great and the lobby was beautiful. We got bumped up to one of the renovated rooms & it was lovely.

I agree with you, such a tragedy they're knocking down such an iconic hotel and replacing it with a boring glass and steel tower. Like you said, Hotel Penn was beautiful with a great staff, many who had spent their careers there. Affordable NYC hotels (particularly in Manhattan) are an endangered species.

@@JonathanBrowneMenzies We went to NYC again later that year but stayed at a different hotel. It was adequate, but nothing special. And I guess I can confess this now! We were going to visit the Empire State Building & I had a roaring headache so we went to the little store in the lobby of the Hotel Penn to buy a 2-pack of Tylenol. We remembered how nice the lady had been on our previous visit. Then we sat in the lobby for a little while until the painkiller kicked in! I will always remember it fondly.

The McKim, Mead and White designed Pennsylvania Hotel that faced directly opposite the original Penn Station, which had been the largest hotel in the world when it opened, and managed to survive all these years is now just a big hole in the ground. Gone! Went there today (9/30/2023) to see what might be left, nothing except traces of the building facade where the two subway entrances were. And what will take its place? Another office tower, of course. The hotel was actually protected under the city’s landmark status, but THE DEMS who are running New York into the ground these days do not pay attention to any laws. For the right price, they will selectively apply the law to political enemies, and give their filthy rich friends a pass. I stayed there once, got a nice room for relatives visiting New York. Your review is quite accurate. Even in its modernized state (the original lobby was two stories high, with a large glass ceiling, before they lowered it to make a second floor), it was nice. Check out pre-renovation pics of the entrance area and lobby, this was palace!

Sad that it will be torn down after 100 years, but that place was a rat´s nest. There is this "Penn Hotel horror movie" on youtube, I have filmed basically the same with my own smartphone. Stayed there in April 2016 for two nights and it was disgusting, Filthy, unfriendly staff, and simply a piece of junk. A bargain for central Manhattan, yes. The aircon was no aircon, it just blew hot air and was completely full of mold. Dirty windows, dirty curtains, dirty everything. No pillows covers, I used my shirt to cover it. Luckily, that was fixed the next day.

Hotel Pennsylvania is considered to be a budget/tourist class hotel in NYC, maybe equivalent to Red Roof Inn or Super 8. I was very happy with the hotel, location, and value. Sure, it could be better, but in NYC you'll pay for it. I would rather save on the room rate and have money to spend on Broadway tickets and restaurants. But to each his own. Sorry to hear that Oskar. Hotel Penn was a tourist class hotel, not luxury. For my money, the value proposition was unbeatable. Tough to find a $100 room in Manhattan these days. Wishing you the best and thanks for watching!

How much did they pay you for this review???Front desk (after over an hr in line.....) rude. SHitty. Run down, drab, average rooms. THis HOtel needs shut down. And look like it's being liquidated. Sad given the history. Here's to the future!

Hey Renee, thanks for watching! I had a great experience at Hotel Pennsylvania. I liked the location, historical building, and tremendous value including free breakfast. I found the staff to be helpful and polite ;-) There are many luxury hotels in Manhattan with more modern amenities, although they don't come cheap. Unfortunately, Vornado Realty Trust is replacing the hotel with a skyscraper.

Wirklich traurig. Wie ich wünschte, sie würden das Hotel Pennsylvania erhalten, anstatt ein so schönes historisches Wahrzeichen abzureißen. Vielen Dank fürs Zuschauen!
