Statement on the Passing of Dr. Robert H. Schuller, 1926 - 2015
Huntington Beach, CA - April 2, 2015. The Rev. Dr. Robert H. Schuller, founding pastor of the Crystal Cathedral and minister to millions over four decades through his acclaimed weekly Hour of Power television broadcasts, died Thursday morning, April 2, with his loving family by his side. Dr. Schuller had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer in August 2013. At the time of his death, he was 88 years old.
What follows are words from Robert Vernon "Bobby" Schuller, grandson of Robert H. Schuller, on his special relationship with his grandfather.
I always had a special relationship with my grandfather. He was so warm with all of his grandchildren; we all felt special. I remember he used to love calling me "Robert Schuller the Third" like it was special to him that I carried his name. That made it special for me, too. My dad is also Robert Schuller and I remember the three of us at holidays or on fishing trips talking about how to build a thriving ministry, how to reach people where they are, or debating the best way to write a great sermon.
When my dad was leading the ministry, in 2006, I came to join him to bring younger adults to an aging church. During that time, my grandfather began mentoring me. I would go to the 12th floor of the Tower of Hope every week. There we were, looking at the top of the Crystal Cathedral, Angel Stadium, and Disneyland. You could see the whole world from up there. He would just pour into me for hours. We would debate (I often disagreed with him), dream, and even think through practical issues of theology. I always left feeling encouraged, like I was on cloud nine. Several times he would say, "Bobby, Oral Roberts called me a prophet. I prophesize that someday you will take over after your father!" Though the idea of picking his grandson to carry on would be no surprise to most people, I doubted the idea, mostly because I had no desire to be enmeshed in a family run ministry.
After setting out on my own, the Crystal Cathedral Congregation, now Shepherd's Grove, voted unanimously to have me return and lead the church into its next chapter. I have the incredible honor of carrying on my grandfather's legacy by teaching people that they are not what they do, not what they have, and not what people say about them. They are the beloved of God. This message is going to millions around the world as we carry on the work my grandparents and parents began exactly sixty years ago. The Hour of Power team is dedicated to keeping Dr. Schuller's legacy alive by providing our messages, old and new, to those who need to hear them most.
About Bobby Schuller
Bobby Schuller is a pastor, writer, and speaker on the internationally broadcast television program, the Hour of Power. He is the grandson of Robert H. Schuller, founder of the Crystal Cathedral. Along with hosting the Hour of Power, Bobby is senior pastor of Shepherd's Grove church in Garden Grove, California - the congregation formerly known as the Crystal Cathedral. He has a passion for using media to engage the most distracted culture in history, and believes the power of God can answer the most challenging questions facing today's generation. He resides in Orange, California, with his wife, Hannah, and their children, Haven and Cohen.

God bless you Rev. Schuller. When my mother became housebound, this was my late mother's television church. It brought her a lot of joy. Dr. Schuller was 50 years ahead of his time! We need drive in churches now!

Because of church buildings being closed due to COVID-19 my Mum and & found ourselves watching vintage church services. I'm surprised the current Hour of Power doesn't sell the book: Move ahead with possiblity thinking. Would be perhaps good to get it back in print...

Doctors and specialists can help cure physical ailments, but Dr. Schuller had a special gift to reach deep into your soul and give you salvation and hope. He was there when I was close to my ropes end and I will always love him for that. For the hope he restored in me, for the faith in Christ that I had lost and found again. Rest in peace Dr. Robert Schuller, then rise in glory.

Possibility Thinking. Rev. Schuller's message is as appropriate today as it was in 1970. I spent many hours in the 80s looking for the power. He told me where to find it. He will be remembered for being a great encourager.

I remember the Sundays at home as a child, before I entered my own personal walk with the savior, listening to Dr. Schuller. He never used his TV pulpit to demean any group, person, or denomination. It was heartbreaking reading the difficulty of his last years, and the ridicule heaped upon both he and his family. My prayers go out to the Schuller family. May God bless you, keep you and comfort you in the days ahead. Thank you for sharing him with the world.

Robert Schuller was the one who motivated me enough to become a minister. He was not perfect, but touched the lives of millions and changed the world for the better. May Bobby, Robert A. and others in the family receive the peace of Christ at this time were Robert H. has moved from this physical realm into the spiritual. I'm sure he was welcomed with very wide and open arms.

This is great. I remember listening to Robert Schuller back in the late 70s and early 80s. One of the few televangelists I respected. I also think this is great to see him preaching from his original church, Garden Grove Community Drive-In Church. I have seen pictures of this indoor/outdoor church, but I never thought I would see video of it while being used for a service. Yes, he's not preaching to a parking lot. People could walk into the church or park outside and hear the sermon. Church was designed by Richard Neutra.

+Girazhe You are not alone. I was in the darkest days of my life when I stumbled upon the Hour of Power and it felt as if Robert was speaking directly to Me. The second Sunday it was the same. The third week I had my teenage Stepson watch the program with me and once again God spoke to Me through Robert. 20 years later My Son is an assistant pastor in a small Bible based Church and My Faith in the Lord is fully restored. Peace to You always.

So here are the hymns & music time-stamped. 1:16 - Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts 2:08 - We Praise Thee, O God, Our Redeemer Creator 4:14 - Anthem (song unsure) 8:45 - Bells chiming 11:35 - Fairest Lord Jesus 13:22 - Instrumental organ (song unsure) 17:32 - Spirit of God, Descent upon my Heart 19:55 - Doxology 21:17 - Our Fathers' God to Thee 54:27 - Gloria 55:07 - Postlude *Unsure of some of the music's titles. If you know what they are let me know!

For the instrumental part it is a selection from Bach's Orgelbuchlein. And Postlude I think it is a movement from Mendelssohn's Second Organ Sonata.

What a great religious program this was. Schuller was so uplifting and such a great speaker for what was largely a secular religious show built mostly on psychology rather than so much the Bible. But, it might well have led many to faith or at least led many to feel that they were part of a TV congregation.

Such a wonderful and powerful message. It was such a joy and pleasure to hear Dr. Schuller preach after so many years. This may have been taped many years ago but the message, power and truth still holds today. I recall reading somewhere recently that the Natives in an Ontario jail have no stimulation there for them. I am going to see if I can contact that jail and have this video shared with them. God bless you Dr. Schuller! So many people need to hear this. Did you see the people in his audience, of all ages, glued to what he was saying, what an amazing minister. I wish the same power and growth for your church and audience Bobby. Nothing is impossible, if you believe and have faith!

I thought that the Doxology was a song at the end of the service. I also never have seen the microphone hanging around the neck like a necklace before. This was interesting. Fun to watch the history here. I have visited the cathedral many times growing up in the 90s and 2000s. Getting the flashlights on Christmas Eve was always so cool.

Robert Schuller was a true Man of God. I am awoken each morning by my Alarm Clock, the 2001 Crystal Cathedral present to Eagle Club Members, I read by the light of My Christ the Shepherd lamp, the 2006 Eagle Club Member gift from The Crystal Cathedral. All around my house are reminders of Robert Schuller and the Crystal Cathedral. Jesus Christ talked to me through this humble, plain spoken man. Reverend Schuller is home now with Jesus, God the Father and His wonderful, faithful wife Arvella, they are now making music for God, in person. God loves You All and so do I. May the Lord Shine upon each and every one of You.

He has been an inspiration to me and I thank God for using Dr Schuller to touch so many lives in the world and has been a light on the hill to a gloomy world. I was not a regular viewer of his ministry hour. However on the rare occasion I watched it was in the "Crystal Cathedral" complex. Having heard he started his ministry with a drive-in audience years before I had no idea there was tape of that, and here it is. Time changes a lot of things. I think even with better management the campus of the Cathedral and associated buildings would have been sold by now. Why? Look at the congregation. White Protestant California with few to no exceptions. That world is, as the old movie title says: "Gone with the wind". Where would you find a thousand or even 800 Sunday worshipers for a dress up traditional Protestant service in and around Garden Grove now? They're gone to the grave or fell away from faith or fled SoCal for other places. It is appropriate that the big money of wealthy Catholics purchased Schuller's monument to faith. SoCal is now populated by Latinos, Filipinos, and Vietnamese and some old time European heritage Catholics. They deserve a nice cathedral and may they use it to the glory of God with a nod of appreciation to the Reformed Church minister whose dream it was.

Schuller was, ultimately, a man who achieved his own vision, but who exercised his power to retain that vision within his own family. He wasn’t developing young ministers under him, unless they were family members. Schuller, who died a day shy of Good Friday, “had many, many family members on the church payroll,”. “In a political realm, we would call that nepotism - the benefits of an institution going by blood lines. But Schuller was very successful. He lived a life of great prestige, great wealth.” At the end, though, having lost a court battle to recoup millions from his bankrupt ministries, Schuller died at an assisted living home in Artesia that accepts Medi-Cal.

+EnergeticWaves That was the plan all along... America indeed WAS cleaner, fundamental honor and courage and was dominantly White, no question about it. You mention 'cultural race' but it was using multiculturalism to derail and ruin the culture. The pathetic thing is, anyone under 30 has NO CLUE.They've been so screwed up/alienated that they defend/support what's destroying them like self-imposed suicide pact.I don't know about "end-times" but it's certainly akin to the fall of the Roman empire.
