Part one in a series documenting the transformation of an existing storage space into an apartment for my daughter. In this video I clear out the space, frame walls, and punch a doorway hole in the brick wall.

My father told me before I entered a local college that he was providing me with room and board. Mind you, you would think he would be proud as I was the first in the family to attend college. I was an 18 year old female, and young for my age, not like kids nowadays. He never helped with the application forms (I asked), and I was only able to pay for 2 applications ($25 each). I got into both colleges. He paid for the first semester, complained, complained, so I took over my own tuition thereafter. I never felt loved. It still hurts to this day. I am telling the world what not to do with your kids. YOU ARE A WONDERFUL FATHER!

I was really hoping you'd frame up pocket doors for the laundry room and the interior door, considering the limited space....seems like a perfect setting for them. Additionally your door to your shed could've been a 42 inch wide door for moving larger things in and out easily.
@MadebymickАй бұрын
Hi, and thanks for the comment👋. I’m actually planning on leaving the interior doorway, and the laundry room door open because I want the mini split heating and cooling system to flow into all areas, and the shed I closed in, I’m planning on installing a garage door on the end later on to turn it into a small garage.

Another great video, and I like your videos - the only thing I don't like about them? They're too short! 😅 On a serious note; Yes it's crazy how much the property prices has gone up, even here in "commie" Denmark! 😁 Here in our socialist "paradise" the young ones can't start on the property ladder if they don't have parents with [very] deep pockets that can help them, otherwise forget it! Even in the more rural areas the prices has gone up, because ppl has to move further and further out from the big cities, so that puts a pressure on the market even out there too. I must admit, I fully understand when some youngsters say: "Why even bother?! No matter what we do, we'll never be able to buy not even a small apartment, so why take an education? Why study for +7 years to get an university degree, and then be left back with a student debt I will struggle with for the rest of my life, and I STILL can't afford to buy a property, so as said, why even bother?!" 🥺
@MadebymickАй бұрын
Thanks, and I agree that the videos could be a bit longer, I appreciate the feedback. 👍 It’s interesting to hear about other parts of the world experiencing the same crazy inflation that we’re experiencing here in the states. I bought a lot and built my first house 30 years ago for $80,000.00 all in, that house would cost $450,000.00+ now! How does a young person/couple afford to get into a home? You make a good point, I understand why some youngsters feel like there’s no hope, their goals and dreams have been crushed!
@MadebymickАй бұрын
By the way, the area where I live here in central Utah was settled by Scandinavian immigrants in the mid to late 1800s. My great grandfather came over from Denmark in 1877 at the age of six. It’s on my bucket list to visit that part of the world someday.

Another good video. That opening through the brick wall looked easier on Timelapse than it probably was. I thought you would have to use a demo saw, but I was wrong.

Kudos to your building skills. FYI, inflation is a global phenomenon brought on by that pesky little incident called the pandemic. And there aren't that many 20 year-olds buying houses unless their last name is Hilton.

Great going. Where I live, you would likely need a "building permit" from the local council costing about $20,000 , for that renovation. Why didn't you get your daughter to help , as it would help to have a psychological sort of "buy in" to this renovated space ? Is she going to help in some later stages, painting and wallpapering perhaps ?
@Madebymick23 күн бұрын
Thanks, and yes there’s different regulations, permits, and fees in different areas. I agree on her helping me for the “buy in”. I’m starting to paint now, and she’s helping me more with the finishing. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I think I would have removed the new closet and reworked that area that was already busted thru Rather than adding another door

I thought about that, but I would have pretty much lost the closet. Not sure where else to put it, and I really like the way the place lays out like it does. Thanks for your input. 👍

Would have been more practical to remove the closet and use the closet door to enter the new area. Or just walk through the closet if you don’t want to remove it
@MadebymickАй бұрын
I did consider that, but it would have destroyed the closet either way, and I wasn’t sure of where to relocate it. I feel like it lays out better with the kitchenette on the end also. Thanks for the feedback👍
