the worst part was 100% the fact that there are too many characters in this book. and all of them are irrelevant. TOG also had a bunch of characters but from what i remember they all had some kind of purpose. Tharion and Ithan did nothing in this book. Also another problem was the non existent stakes. i never felt stressed for any of the characters because sjm is incapable of writing tension. i know that nobody is going to die (expect for useless side characters like sigrid). Ruhn loses his hand and gets it back a few chapters later (it could have added tension if they weren’t able to grow it back) Lidia and Bryce both litterally die and come back to life 💀. if she doesn’t want to kill her characters then she shouldn’t write epic fantasy.

I totally agree. I started reading recently the genre romantasy. My first book was Crescent City 1. I loved it. The plot is addictive. I have read immediately CC2. Its not so good as the first one. Still loved it and it turned out in a major cliffhanger. Thankfully, i didnt waited two years to read cc3 because it was a major disappointement. The whole tension summarizes in the first 300 pages and that's all. Irrelevant sub plots, many useless characters, no epic twists, lack of spice and love chemistry between the main couple, no epic conclusion. The point is that the writer could develop more the stories of the main characters and give them a hype and not use numerous side characters with sub plots that made no sense. I didnt finished it until the end. I quitted and i didnt expect this to happen considering of how much i enjoyed the first two books. I wonder what SJM will write in CC4.

So true!!! Not all fantasies can be as chunky as this but if this is how long it is. Give the characters their importance on the story like what Brandon Sanderson is doing. He went over 1000 pages with GOOD REASON. SJM's Crescent City has the potential to be a great Trilogy if she gave her characters some importance, even it has smut. You can't throw a character in that plot and he does nothing the entire 900 pages.

Nothing personal against Sarah J Mass as a person, but it baffles me how her books and the millions of awful romantasy clones of her books completely overshadow genuinely great epic fantasy authors from past and present. We've fallen a long way since the age of Tolkien, Robin Hobb, Robert Jordan, Ursula Le Guin, Tamora Pierce, Anne Mccaffery, Michael Moorcock, Gene Wolfe, Diana Wynn Jones, Roger Zelazny, David Eddings, Jack Vance, Raymond E. Feist, Glen Cook, etc.

SJM isn't a good writer but house of earth and blood imo was actually decent. She actually focused on a fun plot and wrote a healthy enough relationship to root for much better than Acotar and Tog. Which are atrocious book series. So reading Sky and Breath and Flame and Shadows was just so disappointing. I don't know if they're worse than Tog or Acotar but I was just so upset. I need to just stop reading SJM but I do it to fit in I guess because so many people love it even though her books are evidently not good but half the book community consumes them and I want to be apart of that and I just can't. If Leigh Bardugo had written these books maybe I'd be singing a different tune but alas. 😔

Oh my!! THIS!! I haaaaated this book so much. I hate Nesta and in this book when we had Nesta and Bryce, I had a strong feeling that Sarah switched their characters, because first time in a century I didn’t mind Nesta but completely loathed Bryce. If there were no names, I wouldn’t know who was who. I was so mad on the entire plot and on the attitude of our MC that I sent over 30 screenshots to my friends, fuming over this “masterpiece”. We waited for so long for this? I read all theories and they were amaaazing, and absolutely none of them were true. 200+ pages of Bryce and Nesta in the caves🤢 I didn’t need that, thanks. Also I remember how people hated on feysand in 2 books and their too sweet love, for me it was cool, but Bryce and Hunt🤢 Every second “my mate”, “my queen”, “let this world burn because I need to save my mate”. It was too much. I didn’t like their relationship in 2 book, Hunt lost his personality and here I not just didn’t care about them, I felt sick all the time. Don’t believe in their love🤷🏻♀️ CC3 is such a disappointment, as well as Silver flames. I had none expectations towards the last one, so it didn’t matter. But CC3… Sarah is losing her ability to write.

After giving it some thought, I've decided that I'm not going to read it. Because even though I consider myself a Sara J. Maas fan, House of Sky and Breath was a 2 star book for me. Like, I had to force myself to finish it just to get to that cliff hanger... And I was kind of excited for this one, but then saw the kindle price and was shocked. It was almost 17 euros! I'm sorry, but I'm not paying that amount for a kindle book lol. House of Sky and Breath was like 12, and I already thought that was expensive... Anyways, I downloaded Amazon's free sample of the book and... it did not convince me to keep reading lol. I have to admit I read the book quite fast and I thought at first that I liked it ... But... From the beginning to the end, no character made any sense (maybe Nesta did). I couldn't stop myself from thinking each page "but btw, why has Bryce to never tell a f*ck to anyone about her plans ?" (other than building artificial tension), "why are the people from the other world putting her right away in some kind of cell like she deserves punishment ?", "why Hunt needs to be so over depressed and boring for such a long period ?", "is there a point at having suddenly all the side characters to be chiefs of some sort ?", and so on.... I think it killed any kind of willing suspension of disbelief I had left :/

Look, SJM wrote this book like an anime. I read a paranormal fantasy DBZ, Sailormoon, Naruto-esque villian like story. The language senzu bean. The otherworldly princess mates to a guy older than her. Stars coming out of chests (in sailormoon they’re crystals). The power boosts at the end. The Otsotsuki world eating villians. The story is so much more passable reading it like an anime Also, I really dislike the theme “through love all is possible.” Love didn’t fix the trauma. Love isn’t going to fix your socioeconomic problems. You know what helped Bryce fixed those? Murder. Straight up revolution with batman Lidia and a war-experienced mate who she never went for advice

I mostly enjoyed the read because I have a preexisting care for certain characters and if I am emotionally invested I’ll read just about anything about them, but it was def the weakest I’ve read from her and I felt it had way too many convenient solutions and some of the plot lines (ITHAN ESPECIALLY OMG) felt so… pointless? Hunt’s character also felt so reduced here. I liked Hunt and Bryce in the first book because they both had their own strong motivations separate to each other that just ended up complementing each others goals. But Hunt here just felt like his only personality trait was how much he wants/loves Bryce and idk if that’s supposed to be romantic but it just feels underdeveloped and fuckin weird. The biting ruhn’s hand off… lol. I think it was just supposed to be super brutal but it felt forced and it did nothing for me, or for them considering it doesn’t help them escape anyway lol. Like it was just for shock factor but it’s not even shocking in this context. Confusing, yes, but not shocking. Strange choice. Also the way all the lore was just told to us like a documentary was disappointing. Also, the world of Acotar is so vivid and rich and we spent the whole time underground🥲 Anyway, I didn’t hate the book because I still had a good enough time but I definitely was questioning a lot of Sarah’s choices lol I felt like I just had to turn my brain completely off.

I read the Crescent City series because I was told about the spoiler at the end of book two. I genuinely have enjoyed ACOTAR, particularly ACOMAF and ACOSF because of the character growth. The characters in that series, ACOTAR, feel real to me and grounded (at least most of the time). I genuinely enjoy reading those ones. The Crescent City series however....I haven't enjoyed reading any of them. The characters feel out of place, they don't feel like they actually have personalities if that makes sense? Like she adds the sarcasm, which is cool and I like those dialogue moments, but to have them all the time---even in serious scenes? It feels out of place and I don't enjoy the character interactions. I was excited to read the newest one because of the existence of ACOTAR in it and actually seeing how those characters would all interact, and we barely got any of it. I wish it had been more drawn out, the pacing also felt way too fast. Sarah's strong point as an author comes when she lets her characters drive the story, not the plot, which is what she did in ToG and for much of the Crescent City series---which is why I feel no strong connection to many of the characters. The side characters feel more compelling than Bryce, particularly Ruhn and Lidia, but like?? Their interactions feel forced sometimes. I could honestly go on and on as to why I don't like Bryce as a character. It has nothing to really do with her being hot headed or jumping the gun, but rather she is made out to be like this analytical thinker, who is crafty and sneaky but it just...Doesn't fit? Like she is overly judgmental (which I don't mind, but that isn't really challenged it feels like at all), and what little the new book does to try and challenge that (like in her judgments about the Fae) it just doesn't actually feel well versed---there is no internal struggle. I also couldn't tell 90% of the time who's POV we were supposed to be following. I didn't care about a lot of the subplots, and overall I was just really disappointed.

I actually loved the book and the series. I really like SJM's writing, but if you were looking for a romance, this is not it. It has romantic moments but I've read far more romantic books. If you were looking for an ACOTAR story because of the crossover, this is not it. This is a Crescent story, it's not about ACOTAR. It had crossover elements, cameo appearances, but this is not an ACOTAR story. It's not a TOG story. I personally think the cross over was done very well. I loved it. I guess it all depends on your expectations. I wanted a good STORY and that's what I got. It was action packed and entertaining. What's funny to me is that most of the comments here are people who haven't even read the book... just bashing SJM. If you don't like her, that's your choice, don't read her books. There's plenty of other writers that would love your patronage. SJM could care less, she's laughing all the way to the bank with her chart topping books. More power to her.

so basically you did a 1:21:17 video to tell the world how much you hated the book. I could be ok with that, but you swore the whole time, everything was bad, that characted was not it, the other one was irrelevant, no one was important. Hmm... why read it then? Why waste the time and finish it? Even tho I liked the book, I did not love it like the other ones in the series, and I can accept that some points you had were correct, but the way you talked about them was not it. I am usually a person that has unpopular opinions, but I do not throw hate around like candies. I checked other videos on your page and you seem to really hate books. Nothing is good enough. Interesting. I am curious what type of books do you actually like, or are you making these videos and monitize them for throwing hate around? Just asking... I stumbled upon this video and since I am interested to see what other people think about the books I like/love, this video was just... not it! A lot of people disliked this book, hated it even, but the way they expressed their opinion was so valid and beautiful I had to admire their opinion and appreciate the time they spent in sharing it with others. Myeah, it is safe to say this channel is not for me. No offense for anyone who likes the content, but maybe something less toxic would be a better alternative. Have a nice day!

If you knew you would hate it, because as you said "I don't really cared that much", why did you read it at all? Just so you can make a rant video? I did not really liked this book either, but I paid attention while I was reading it. If I have not, why would I spend days reading it? It would be a waste of my time, really.
