That scene when Jacaerys is trying his best to deliver a message to his "Queen" when all really wanted to do was to embrace his mother.... it's got to be my favorite scene in the first episode. Wonderfully acted and executed, the slow breaking of his voice and Rhaenyra also trying to hold on a façade until also finally giving in to hug her first born.

Of course Daemon ordered it. He specifically asked what if they couldnt find Aemond and we get a close up of Daemon's face... then they guy starts saying "son for a son" over and over. Daemon told him that.

Daemon wanted a son for one of Alicent’s sons. Not her grandson. People keep overlooking that. Also 🧀🩸never say “well we couldn’t find Aemond after 3 minutes of looking. How bout we off this prince instead”. . .? And Daemon wanted Aegon specifically. He could’ve looked at 🩸🧀 like that bc I took it as he’d off 🩸🧀 if they return without Aegons head. Do you think enough time elapsed for Daemon to explain an entire secondary option if they couldn’t find Aemond..? Why would he even give them an out? They’d just go off to find the little one. Much easier to sneak in and off a small child opposed to the prince with the biggest dragon that also is the most skilled fighter in the castle...? Think it through friend.

@@Persephone_Personifiedthere's a theory that Helaena's children are actually Aemond's, it'd be easy for her to pass them off as Aegon's since they've got the same genes and Aemond has always had more affection for Helaena than Aegon did. A son for a son would be right in this situation if that's true and he was getting secrets from Mysaria before going to see Blood and Cheese.

If you stayed longer in the video, I put that together on my own however initially I read that scene with Daemon as his silent response and glare was a "don't make me repeat myself" thing and then when they couldn't find Aemond, they were like "he'll be happy with just a son for a son right?"

@@Persephone_Personified In the books the plan was to kill the little kid all along (not Aemond). and all 3 kids are awake when helena chooses which one to die (she lies and picks the other one and Blood and Cheese say something along the lines of "see that boy, your mother wants you dead" and kills the heir instead)

Daemon didn’t want that outcome. they never discussed “well he did say to eliminate this one if we can’t find Aemond”. Are 🩸🧀 telepathic...? Cheese made the decision It was a rash decision There was a ten second back and forth about the gender of the children not if Daemon said to just off the kid in case of emergency. . . hate daemon all you want. But he didn’t want this. His intent was to off Aemond and Aemond alone. That’s what Rhaenyra asked for.

Aemond is Alicents son. Viserys is Alicents grandson. Son for son would be Aemond or Aegon ..? Did Daemon say “son for a son or any male Hightower... maybe the kings oldest son. . . sure that’s not technically a son of Alicent the one that birthed our sons killer... but if you look for 2 minutes and don’t find Aemond just off Vicerys. ..But be aware he has a twin sister. Make sure you off the boy. . .?” Or did he say “I want Aemonds head or I’ll take both of yours”.

You mentioned the idea that this is all due to Alicent misunderstanding Aerys's half-addled speech to her in bed, but that's leaving out the fact that we (and Alicent) find out after his death that the small council were planning to steal the throne anyway, one way or the other (which caused Alicent and her father to send different messengers to compete to retrieve her son... to have greater influence over whose plan of how to usurp the throne would go). So I'd say that Alicent's misunderstanding plays a role in it - it colors how she chooses to interpret things - but the rest of the powers at the small council table were aiming for this in any case.

The death of the child was darker in the books: both kids were awake and I believe both were boys. Helena was made to choose which and when she did they killed the other one telling the boy “remember your mother wanted you dead”. Wished they did that would’ve been even darker 😢

nah actually in the books haelana had 3 kids, 2 twins , girl boy, and a younger son, and in the books daemon intended to kill aegons son itself, what happens is that they tell haelana to choose or we kill both of your sons, she even offers herself, but in the end she chooses the younger son cause he was just 3 or 4, but they kill the older instead, and not kill, cut his head off, later haelana could never look at her younger son cause she wanted him dead, i can see why story is a little different giving her only 1 son, cause that way Aegon does not have an heir at all

Idk,her being too stunned to speak and quietly running away from the sounds of her son’s decapitation with her daughter in hand was still pretty dark lol In my opinion the book version was just gorier . This version is darker/heavier cuz now Aegon has no heir and their daughter might be wed off to another cousin , I guess we’ll see

It seems the greens don't know about Targaryens "dragon dreams" or ability to foresee the future. So there's a chance the hightowers will never figure out that they can use or consider Helaena's abilities when the greens plot their next course of actions against #TeamBlack. BUT IF they do figure it out, then it might make them more powerful knowing the possible outcome/s of the upcoming battles.

1 - As to the timeframe, the showrunners or Emma said in an interview that 2 weeks pass between the last episode and this one. 2 - The fisherman actually caught the pieces of Luc and his dragon in their nets, they didn't just wash up on shore. The fishing nets would have pulled it all up from the bottom, which is why both the wing and Luc's cloak were wrapped in the netting. 3 - You are right, Daemon is taking it out on everyone else because he needs to blame and to punish SOMEONE. I think he truly does love Rhaenyra, but at this moment he feels helpless to aid her in her grieving process because she left and she insisted on going alone. So he's looking to DO something, anything at all, to stop feeling helpless. So first it's "Let's go kill Vhagar and Aemond, but Rhaenys won't do that because her queen hasn't sanctioned it. So then it's "You are to blame for not killing the Hightower when you had all 5 of them there in your sight." But she dismisses that too, refusing to even argue with him so he can vent. Then it's Mysaria's fault, and she flat out tells him, "You are only angry at me because your true enemies are out of your reach." Then it's Ser Erryk's fault, but again Daemon gets defeated with calm logic. I mean, he can't even engage someone in a heated argument, so yeah...he's spinning his wheels because he doesn't know what to do and he respects Rhaenerya enough not to fly off in one of his famous fits and do something he hasn't been sanctioned to do. It isn't until she comes home and says she wants Aemond that Daemon finally takes action. The thing is, she didn't say she wanted him dead. Maybe she wants to put him on trial or hold him hostage to make Alicent agree to some kind of terms. She doesn't elaborate in that moment. But because Daemon is filled with rage that his stepson was murdered when he was acting as a peaceful messenger (there are certain protections that are supposed to be extended to messengers, after all) and because he feels helpless to relieve his wife's grief, he decides to cook up this plan to have a couple of people sneak into the Red Keep and murder Aemond. Or any son of Aegon's they can get hold of. And that was flawed from the beginning. He knows how good a fighter Aemond is, why isn't he getting these people to sneak HIM into the keep so he can do this? Is he just hoping they will get him in his sleep? It's a bad plan all around, and -- as ALWAYS -- Daemon doesn't consider the long-term consequences of his actions. All he has done is add fuel to the fire. His thought is that he wants to hurt them as badly as they hurt Rhaenyra. But wtf does he think hurting them is going to do except to enrage them all AND turn people against Rhaenyra if it gets out that she had people kill a *child* in his bed? Daemon isn't as smart as he likes to think he is.

It seems that there was actually several weeks between the end of the last season and the beginning of this one. Rhaenyra must have been looking for Lucerys' remains for weeks at least. Jace was able to fly to the Vale, meet with Jeyne Arryn, fly to the North, and meet with Cregan before he got word of Lucerys' death.

Blood and Cheese (the scene at the end) was way more disturbing in the book. Unlike the show, both Aegon and Helaena had 3 kids, 2 boys and a girl. Helaena is in Alicents room when it happens and Alicent gets bound and Helaena is forced to pick which one of her sons to get killed ("A son for a son"). She tells them to kill her instead but they refuse and tell her to pick or they'll kill all of them and Cheese warns her if she doesn't choose quick Blood will get bored and rape her daughter. Helaena ends up picking Maelor (the kid that's not in the show - it's presumed she picked him because he was the youngest) and Cheese looks at the little boy and says "You hear that, boy? your momma wants you dead" and instead of killing him they kill Jaehaerys instead (they behead him and take his head) and both Helaena and Alicent witness the entire thing and it fucks them up. So basically in the book, Helaena is actually forced to choose the kid to be killed and then has to deal with the guilt of her remaining son knowing she chose him for death.

I love how Cregan Stark says that the wall could keep out even the dragons but in season 7 of GOT they went beyond the wall with no problem. Just more proof that D&D just did not give a fuck anymore and wanted the show over.

i'm glad it was the stark's that told jace about luke. they are a bit more respectful than some of the other houses. i also feel that if things had been different and aegon had been raised in unison with rhaenyra instead of against her, he may have become a decent person.

A mother witnesses her son beheaded, soem amazing acting and sheer shellshock. And yet people want it to be exactly as dark as the books. Some fans are just such gatekeeping twats. A moment with emotional subtleties to the acting and raw horrible power. but yeah NUT LHYKE DA BOOK so shit i guess.

It was Deamon's order to kill Helena's boy. When the assassins asked what they should do if they did not find Aemond, the show cut to another scene without an answer to this question. But this answer came in the conversation between the two assassins, "he said a son for a son". Killing the child was therefore Deamon's alternative. Helena had the vision with the rats (the maid remembered Helena's warning when the assassin stood in front of her). I think she had already seen the death of her son and wanted to change the future. That's why she pointed directly to her son, hoping the killers wouldn't believe her. In her vision, she may have pointed to her daughter and the killers didn't believe her and killed her son. Now she knows that the future is fixed and cannot be changed. Another possibility would be that she immediately pointed to the son so that she wouldn't lose both children. If the killers had killed the daughter, her son would have died on the throne as king at the latest, if not earlier in the fight for it. A throne that her son may not have wanted anyway. At least that's what she told her husband. So she pointed to her son so that at least she wouldn't lose her daughter, because in this world women are less at risk. By the way, there is still at least one male heir to the throne of Aegon. In case it was forgotten, Aegon fathered at least one son in the children fighting pits. We saw a son of his there last season. And I think when the time comes, the gray worm will intervene, because she knew what was going on, as did the twins and I think Aemond too (not sure). Kristen Cole could also get into trouble, because according to Otto's order he should go to his post. The question is where this post was. If he should be at Helena's door, Cole has a huge problem, because he was in Alisant instead.

They did ask Daemon “what if we can’t find him??” And doing this is what Daemon probably told them to do if that was the case. The weirds cutting sounds I bet they want the boy’s head as evidence that they did it

From what I know in the book Jaehaerys death was so bloody that his mother was covered in his blood but they really mellowed it down for this scene and from what I remember Helaena was actually screaming and understandably hysterical.

After rewatching the episode and considering the title of the episode, A Son For A Son, I'm almost 100% sure it means the sons are the DIRECT sons of the one's on the respective thrones ...Rhaenera lost Luke so Daemon wants them to take out Aegon's son IF they can't find/take out Aemond ...thoughts?!!

Criston & Alicent's hypocrisy 🙄🤦♂️🤦♀️ crack me up 😳😯🤭😆😆😆 he backstabbed & betrayed Rhaenyra bcoz he refused to be her "whore" and now he is sloppy @$$ seconds & has no problem being Alicent's 😬😖😫🤢🤮🤮 and oh my, Alicent who's been so judgmental of Rhaenyra, how tables have turned 🙄🤦♂️🤦♀️ her jealousy & hate that Rhaenyra found a way to fulfill her royal duties & her personal desires at the same time must've really burned her deep inside, being a pawn in Otto's chess board. But now we find out Alicent has been doing the same things she judged about her former best friend. If the dowager queen was committing adultery, against Viserys, with the now lord commander of the king's guard, then their overly pious hypocrisy has definitely cemented my support for #TeamBlack. I have to purchase a pair of really good headsets & rewatch both #HouseoftheDragon & #GameofThrones. Your facial expressions/reaction during little Jaehaerys' death😖🤭😄😄 I had captions & voice over narration on + surround sound ~~ and you're right, leaving the visuals of that scene to viwers imagination = made me squirm. Almost like Rhaenyra's birthing scene of Joffrey in season 1, you can clearly hear all the splishing & splashing & squelcing of childbirth 😳😖😫🤢🤢 oh by the way, Ryan Condal said its been 2wks in the story, from s1 finale to s2 premiere. Although it feels longer bcoz it's been almost 2yrs since we saw Vhagar chomp down on Lucerys & Arrax killing them instantly 💔😢😭😭

In the books Blood&Cheese is much different. First off, Aemond is never mentioned to be the target, and Rhaenyra is not the one to incite the mission. Daemon sends Rhaenyra a letter from Harrenhal (in the books he is already there) that says- “An eye for an eye, a son for a son. Lucerys shall be avenged”. B&C sneak into the Tower of the Hand, which is not guarded as heavily as Maegor’s Holdfast, where Aemond was, and they head for Alicent’s chambers, who is getting ready for bed (Criston and her are not a thing in the book). Helaena and her three children (Jaehaerys, Jaehaera, and Maelor, who was not present in the show version) visit Alicent’s chambers each night before bed, and were just about to visit. When they get there, they find Alicent tied to the bed and her bedmaid strangled. Blood bars the door and Cheese takes Maelor and tells Helaena to choose which son of hers will die. Helaena pleads that they kill her instead but they refuse, siting- “An eye for an eye, a son for a son. A wife is not a son.” Cheese tells her that if she does not choose then Blood will grape her daughter and they will kill everyone in the room. Eventually, Helaena chooses Maelor, her younger son. Maybe it was because she thought he would be too young to understand , or perhaps it was because the elder boy, Jaehaerys, was Aegon’s first born and heir. Cheese holds Maelor up and whispers to him- “You hear that, little one, your momma wants you dead”. In one clean motion, Blood strikes of the older boys-Jaehaerys’s-head, and the two take off with it. When the guards finally burst through the door, they find Helaena grasping her son’s headless body to her, mad with grief. So yeah, Blood&Cheese is much more tame

Interesting! Just remember though, the book is second and third hand information gathered by an in world historian who is unreliable and biased while this is meant to be what actually took place.

@@Omn1Media While I get the idea that the show is meant to be what happened and the book is unreliable history, but I really don’t think basic character birth and info would be wrong, and the show has compressed timelines and changed character ages. I wish they just said this is an adaptation, not that this is what really happened and the books are just inaccurate, because it’s now saying that the historical births and ages are also incorrect, which just doesn’t make sense.

This was so good! I know everyone talks about choosing teams, and I do want Rhaenyra on the throne, I just still can’t bring myself to hate Alicent. Especially when she lit that candle for Rhaenyra’s son. Everyone talks about hypocrisy but it’s not like Rhaenyra has been a beacon of good who didn’t make a mockery of the system. Rhaenyra, I love her, I want her on the throne - but she is also a hypocrite. People also treat Alicent as if she’s not a human who makes mistakes and has the ability to regret them. Nothing is black and white. There are many shades of grey. This shouldn’t be about picking teams and instead be appreciative of how multifaceted some characters can be.

Daemon is blaming others when he was the one who really caused this issue in the first place. If when his wife Lena died he had immediately bonded Vhagar with his daughter or himself. Obviously, they can have more than one dragon - Daenerys did. He lost the biggest power in the world which is why the children fought, why Ameond lost an eye, held a grudge against Lucerys, and murdered him. The blame stops at Daemon - the adult. If Rhaenys had burned the greens when she escaped she would have held the label "Kingslayer" for life. It would have cost her house their honor and she could've paid with it with her own life because Daemon would be speaking about her being bitter for never being queen and "How dare she kill his brother's sons." That was a no-win scenario for her and she knew it. I really like Daemon but this was on him from the start.

As for your question about Helaena and Aegon, I am not sure if anyone mentioned it yet, but there were a few scenes last season that alluded to their marriage. At Laena's funeral, Aegon talks to Aemond how they(Aegon and Helaena) have "nothing in common" and mentions his disinterest in marrying her. Aemond says something along the lines of "she is going to be your future queen" hinting that they were probably betrothed at that point. Then we see Helaena with their 2 kids in episode 8 I believe, and after Aegon assaulted the servant and Alicent goes to question him, Alicent also mentions something about "shaming his wife" by doing what he did. Don't worry too much about forgetting it, you would need to pay really close attention or watch the episodes multiple times to catch every little detail. They made it more clear in this episode for anyone who didn't know anyway. Hope I made enough sense. Loved the reaction!

Never read the book, nor knew what would happen, and overall enjoyed the ep. My biggest complaints weren't the lack of gore but some scenes making no practical sense to me. - Why were there basically no guards in Kings landing? - Why did Helaena basically do nothing to stop her child's death. - no pleads for her own life, no shouting, no tears? - WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS? (not a real complaint, but 50% of the reason I'm here is for them. If they are going to die, I want to care for them and not see them for the first time in the same episode that they die.)

I think most folks were disappointed in the lack of emotional intensity, as compared to how the scene was portrayed in the books. I won’t spoil it, I’ll only say that story, as reported in the book, was much more intense due to a few elements that were omitted in the show.

But the tv version's sound effects, leaving the visuals to play out in our imagination, is really messed up as well.

@@walkerlamebrain Right, F&B is meant to be unclear - it doesn't mean that the show is the definitive canon version of events, but this is how Ryan Condal interpreted it and it's honestly neat that both his vision and your vision are valid. Ryan has said in an interview that they don't like to cut characters but the kids are all younger and therefore there wasn't room for Maelor. So without him the scene had to be written differently.

This episode sadly kinda disappointed, especially in how they messed up adapting the Blood and Cheese moment with Helaena. Such a crucial moment and they ruined Helaena fighting for her children in the books to her just giving up her kid like that, and basically being another vague oopsie. At this point the Dance of Dragons might as well be the Dance of Oopsies. They adapted this moment far better in the animated histories and lore section for season 5 in the dvds years ago than this.

Yeah, I’m not sure I agree with this take at all. For one, what does vague oopsie mean? They quite literally asked Daemon what should they do if they can’t find Aemond and the scene cuts to black as daemon is about to answer. It was quite clear killing Jaehaerys was plan B, was it not? Perhaps you needed them to tell you that yes….kill the next best thing please. Secondly, what do you mean she fought for her children? I’m starting to think you didn’t read the books. She didn’t fight for her children, she meekly said can you kill me instead and then was immediately shut down, instantly caving and picking her youngest son to die. Where is this brave and crucial moment of Helaena fighting? In your head or out your ass? All in all….the more I think about your comment, the more I believe it to be one of the most asinine and moronic takes I’ve read all week.

@@trymex9168 There was a leak way back that claimed Jaehaerys' death was going to be turned into a total mistake caused by B&C just bungling everything, because the showrunners wanted to let Daemon off the hook by having him not specifically condone it. Clearly that's not what we got in this episode. Well, I think maybe the main points of the leak were accurate but not the interpretation of it. It is changed from the book where B&C say Daemon told them to make Helaena choose one of her children to die, but I think wanting Aemond's head as revenge for Lucerys makes more sense as it plays out in the show. In any case it's not the whitewashing of Daemon's complicity by turning it into an accident that people were convinced it was going to be. Daemon definitely told them "a son for a son" if they couldn't find Aemond, so they seized the opportunity. I think he might try to claim he didn't mean for this to happen next episode, but I got the impression he knew exactly what he was telling them. I mean he was even smirking all ominously as the scene cut away.
