It’s also worth pointing out that Aegon is grieving. That final scene with him sobbing and Alicent walking away showed everything about why they’re so fucked up.

That's because the whole point of the dance of the dragons is to show that when rich people start wars over petty arguments and power plays it's always the normal people affected most by it, if they didn't put emphasis on the small folk the entire point of the dance would be lost

Everyone's reaction to the fight is yelling Rhaenyra "Get out!" Do you not have eyes? She is trapped. If she tries to run to the door she will give the assassin a clear path to run her through. Pay attention to the rooms geography. The brother made sure there was only one exit out and he was blocking it.

Man I feel like the scene of Aegon weeping at the end all alone adds so much more complexity to his character. Despite his bravado from earlier that scene shows us many things about him. First, is that it was just a mask and he is acting almost entirely out of grief and anger currently. Also, it probably shows a complete breakdown at the realization he is again rejected by his father as he was all his life and now also rejected by Otto. I gotta say too that some of the blame lies with Otto. Aegon never wanted the crown in the first place and Otto did all he could to make it happen but also he never stepped in and filled the void Viserys left and taught Aegon himself. Lastly, Daeron fans, we finally got our mention. Let's hope they do our boy justice. Daeron is hands down the best Green character

Personally I liked Daeron the most bc I like the blue and copper color of his dragon and he was much nicer compared to his brothers. I'm assuming you like Aegon's internal struggle and dragon? If not what is it that draws you to him?

The scene with Alicent & Helena when she looked up and saw the flowers dust falling is foreshadowing to the ashes falling from the battle of dragons. It’s also the same with Rhaenyra when she was playing with her sons.

@@VeritasOphanious not sure yet but since episode 1 her frame work has been shown in a light airy way. When she was at the beach side on the rocks at the beginning of episode 1 & the camera did a close up you could see carefully one side of her face had a dark shadow & one side was light. Am thinking it’s referencing what’s about come.

The acting in this episode was incredible. One of the best episodes of this show for sure. The action scenes in these shows are good, but it's the conversations and political drama that make them great.

I think this is one of the emptiest episodes in the whole universe, but I agree about the acting. But the twins did a fantastic job. They really brought those characters to life and Aegon’s actor. He’s doing a good job.

Criston Cole is hand, Otto fired, Twins dead during a direct assassination attempt on Rhaenyra, Rhaenyra and Daemon in conflict with him leaving and her realising his true nature, the dilema of Baela about her father, the trauma oh Helaena, Aegon losing his mind, the reveal of the existence of Daeron...

They might explain more in the next episode about Mysaria seeing Arryk and she going back to warn the guards. As you can see, Erryk came rushing in as if someone told him his brother is here to kill the Queen. I think Mysaria did warn the guards.

She clearly did. That is why she stopped her escort. She thought it was Erryk for a second, but remembered he had a twin. I'm 90% that she met both in season one when they were searching for Aegon so he could steal the throne.

@@tiasahossain9292 He's by far the most likeable of the Greens (since Helaena has no real characterisation) and is at least relatively competent. But he's still just a kid, he's like 15 when the war starts with no combat experience, so no, he's not some military genius or anything like Robb, but he does pretty well for the position he's in. After Aemond's death - Daeron was the real deal for Rhaenyra

Rhaenys and Daemon are cousins and know each other inside out. And Daemon mentioned “A son for a son” to Rhaenys last episode so she knew what he wanted.

Exactly this. Even if he didn't say it, she would still have suspected him. Pretty much everyone knew he killed his first wife, but no one could do anything about it. Viserys always tried to keep him away because he knows he can't take orders and he will cause a mess if he gets involved in important business.

@@Chromium457Everything is optics. It's bad that the heir has been killed, but Aegon was already on shaky ground. Him taking the throne the day after Viserys publicly strengthened Rhenaera's claim to the throne, Rhaenys breaking out of the dragon pits. Like Otto said, he was already seen as weak. The only thing that would have strengthened his image is to paint the other heir (Rhanaera) as a monster. Unite the people, and in turn the noble houses, against a common enemy. It would have worked if he didn't then turn around and murder all the ratcatchers who were all commonfolk. Especially without publicly giving a reason. To the outsider it just looks like bloodlust for his murdered son. It paints him as the same type of monster he claims Rhanaera to be seeing as she also lost her son.

And I think Otto was in that moment, finally grieving his grandson. He's a very measured man and he knows that saying those things to Aegon would likely have him removed from his position but grief had blinded him.

The acting is right up there this season with "The Boys" season four. Anthony Starr is a standout this season. BUT, it's hard to say one person on "House" has been better than the others. So many great, intense performances.

I wonder which one fell on his sword. He said forgive me. It could have been either one because Arryk didn't want to do it. He came in and told Rhaenyra he had no choice.

@@derps0n839 I think it was Erryk. If I'm recalling correctly, Erryk was the one with the cut on his leg. Arryk dug his fingers into that wound which sent Erryk crawling for his sword. When Arryk came at him he got stabbed and killed. So, it was Erryk who fell on his sword.

@@carleton4199I think that means it was Arryk that fell on his sword. Erryk has the slice to his leg, went for the sword and came lunging back and got stabbed. Areyk, gripped with the guilt of killing his brother and the fact that he must have truly believed in what Viserys said fell on his sword. There was also clearly no way out for him anyway. He would have been put to death regardless. I think it would have been more layerd if it was Erryk tho. Cuz if it was Erryk that survived there would be no way for anyone to actually verify which was which. He would know that no one would trust him near the queen so he fell on his sword to make sure there were no doubts to her safety.

@@k4polo It's also quite clear that for all his scheming, Otto genuinely is thinking of the good of the realm and desperately is trying to prevent as much carnage as he can. And now he knows all too well how utterly unworthy Aegon is of the throne. It's telling how he's going to join up with Daeron, who is by far the nicest and most responsible of the brothers.

Otto was always severely misunderstood and hated. Dude was extremely competent and ambitious yes but no more than Corlys or anyone else. He even suggests naming Rhaenyra in good faith and only changes his tune once she too rejects his counsel (kingsguard scene in particular) and then when Viserys has a son, yes there's some ambition at play, Otto views it as historically the son inherits over the daughter. He's a man of the time in that regard and plays by the rules of succession as pretty much every Lord does

Well, that's because you don't get that Otto has been planning a lot... I mean he's been scheming to put Aegon on the throne for years, he has thought things through. He's been obviously trying to gather armies, the Lannisters are already moving towards the capital. In the meanwhile the Vale hasn't moved a finger to help Rhaenyra, the North is sending only 2000 men... Otto had been winning the war so far

Honestly during this episode I felt bad for Aegon he loved his son he needed someone to mourn with and even his mother didn't comfort him. The Hightowers made him what he is.

His father is equally responsible. He spent years wanting a son. He sacrificed Aemma because he wanted one so badly. When he finally had one, he neglected him. It was Viserys's job to teach his son to be a man. Much like Robert was responsible for Joffrey. Conversely Ned was responsible for Robb and Jon.

@@havok6280 I think that the mistake he made was marrying alicent that was too messy, even if he was a better father she would still whisper bs in their ear. Rhaenyra also needed to make an effort to get closer to her siblings to avoid division once their dad died. Those kids didn't get love from any of their parents. Alicent is cold while Viserys was sick I think ever since they were born.

The dynamics of parent-child bond between Otto and Alicent is reflected onto Alicent and her own children: Aegon, Haelena, and Aemond. Alicent never received compassion, warmth, affection, and sympathy from her dad; hence, she is unable to offer such actions and emotions toward her own children. She tries to confess her sins to Otto but he doesn't have the time for Alicent, his own daughter. For Otto, everything is about practical usage and rationality, no emotion and no feelings. I love how they highlighted the kind of mother Alicent truly is. Aegon needed her twice in this episode alone and both times she turned her back on him. As for Criston, I'm done with that MF. He was on duty that night. Ser Arryk was with the king and crispy cleared the hallways for privacy. It was 10000% his fault. It was refreshing seeing Otto angry over the loss of innocents and i appreciate his reality check to Aegon. No one in their right mind would believe Viserys chose him as heir.

Thissss!! It is the nature of the deaths that skews the favour towards The Greens tho. Lucerys, while sent as an emissary, was killed in "open battle". Jaehaerys however was a toddler beheaded in his room while he slept. Both are bad but one is definitely worse than the other.

Who witnessed the battle? You had Aemond in a lord's court trying to attack Luke. It is not realistic that people would not talk about that.

That twin was probably the most honorable of the bunch who would question Criston if he messed up again and if he found out he's sleeping with Alicent, it's over for Criston. If I was him I would have joined my twin and never looked back. Criston needed to do something "useful" to avoid people questioning his whereabouts that night. He threw him under the bus for his own survival. He became everything he didn't wanna be.

This show should be watched by anyone wanting to make a moving stories that captivate the audience. See this Disney? This is how you make a genre show... make us care, make us cry, make us angry, make us feel something for your characters and we will love you for it! The writing, the scenes, the cinematography, it just all feels right. Every character is written with logical progression and emotion, they are human through and through. Cole's projection, The King's pain and impotency, Otto's struggle against his grandsons' folly, Alicents' guilt and grief, Daemon's anger at his position, Aemon's sorrow at his temper and what it caused, everything just works... Characters we have never met, yet they feel as if we have watched them for 3 seasons of drama. We don't even know thier names, but they make us feel as if they live in this world, and aren't just thrown in randomly.

I think the scene of Aegon crying is also telling of the Hightower family dynamic. Just before we see Alicent try to confide in her father about her troubles and he says, "I do not wish to hear it". When Aegon is in distress, Alicent doesn't comfort him because she herself was never comforted by her father. Even in other scenes from season 1, Alicent has never comforted her sons. Generational trauma. In conclusion this family is horrible

When Helena looks up during the funeral she looks to the sky with the grain falling... the look in her eyes shows she’s seeing more than the mourners. The grain looks like when the ash falls in the final episode of GOT when Dany is full of grief and burns the city. Perhaps it’s a future she has seen now.

The "bad" twin would've definitely killed Rhaenyra if the "good" twin hadn't shown up. The whole reason why the "good" twin showed up was because of Mhysaria's warning. If Mhysaria hadn't been there in that exact place, at that exact time, Rhaenyra would be kebab.

Aegon was fantastic this episode. Impulsive, but how else is he expected to be? His son just murdered and everyone around him is trying to manipulate the situation for political gain when all he wants is revenge. He reminded me a lot of Viserys in S1E2&3

Yep and Otto himself told Aegon his son was worth more dead than alive, how his blood and their families grief was a win for them. Like I don’t care if he is more politically minded and smarter than everyone else that was a shitty thing to say and definitely not the right thing to say out loud. Someone should’ve slapped him or at least reminded him to hold his tongue.

I think the city guard knew exactly what he was in store for because he had tortured and hurt many people before. You saw the opening sequence in S1 when Daemon asserts the guard's authority over King's Landing. By confessing he avoided prolonged torture (which Larys looks disappointed not to have been able to perform) and gets a swift death by being smashed with a mace. Best possible fate for him once he was caught. And I think he knew that.

Alicent scene leaving Aegon showed how different Alicent and Rhaenyra motheing and also their past with their own parent is Rhaenyra goes and hugs his son and thats all he needs and here Alicent just leaves him letting Aegon to grieve on his own it does makes sense don't get me wrong but i wished Alicent would do the same

Honestly, Rhaenera was all of us team black people this ep. Matt Smith is such a great guy and a good actor that we want to love Daemon, but he makes it so dang hard lol! I had a feeling this would be his position. He and Aemond are the same, they neither one intended the results of their actions to happen, but once it did, they both just rolled with it and their attitude was 'oh well, can't change it now'.

The thing is B&C asked him what if we can’t find Aemond and while we don’t hear his exact response they both go on later about it needing to be a son, so Daemon did tell them if you can’t find Aemond then it needs to be a son for a son, so any son of the greens royal family would be accepted (Which given the ones in kings landing would be Aemond, Aegon, or Jaehaerys). So yeah still 100% Daemons fault.

Alicent should have consoled Aegon when was bawling his eyes out about the loss of his son. That was heartbreaking to see in so many ways. She never shows him any real motherly affection. Put all the politics and all the other BS aside and hug your son! Compare that scene with the one between Rhaenyra and Jacaerys last episode, and that pretty much sums up the types of mothers they are in a nutshell. Viserys and Alicent were negligent in showing much paternal love for Aegon. That's one of the key reasons why he turned out the way he did. They just let him run wild doing anything he wanted without providing him a loving foundation. He might have made a decent ruler if they had-or better yet a decent person.

The Dragon women are interesting, because they have the power of flying a war machine, but they are fragile as women, and not warriors on the ground. When the bad twin came into Rhaenyra's bedroom, I kinda wanted her to take a sword, but without her dragon she is just a (medieval) woman... However, the dragon women do have the power of their dragons. It's an interesting alternate reality that we never had in our world, but it's pretty realistic (matching to our world) at the same time.

People love to dunk on Cole and I totally get why but his plan wasnt bad at all. It almost worked!! Its cruel on Arryk and Cole is clearly projecting his guilt onto him but in the grand scheme of things his plan was worth the shot.

the slapping and kissing is a take on a very primal thing in wild mating: females would often try and fight off a mate. if the male stands their ground, THEN they mate. the "I ain't going anywhere" behavior is also used by trainers to break feral pets without fighting: "I claim this nest from you. You want it? kick me off." so many layers without dialogue.

This whole twin impersonator scheme is a bit silly, even if the ending is quite tragic. It depends ENTIRELY on Rhaenyra's Kingsguard leaving their uniforms unaltered for what seems like months, and both twins maintaining the EXACT same facial hair and hairstyle even after they have chosen different sides.

44:58 Misaria is definitely the one who alerted Erryk so he could run towards Rhaenyra's chamber and intervene Arryk on time. Otherwise, Erryk didn't have any reason to barge in suddenly and shout "brother" before even seeing him. I am sure this topic will be addressed in the coming episode.
