Meleys was actually able to bring Vhagar down -- if you paid attention. Vhagar only wins on surprise attacks (sucker punches or rather - sucker munches) . Because when Meleys and Vhagar were head to head Vhagar wasnt able to stop Meleys -- it was only when Meleys and Rhaenys weren't looking, is when Vhagar and Aemond try to attack

Rhaenys returned because regardless of the ambush, the order from her queen and the original intention was to secure rooks rest and stop criston cole's advance. she could've easily fled on several occasions but that would mean effectively giving up the crownlands and maybe the war at this point, so se took her chances and decided to fight. she already beat aegon and she saw how ruthless aemond was, so in a sense dhe was hoping she could end the whole war for rhaenyra here once and for all,. In a sense she knew the danger she was in so you could say she was effectively commiting suicide, but she also knew what fleeing would mean for rhaenyras war effort, so she stayed and fought... say what you wil about rhaenys but if she was the queen she seemed the kind to take on the battle herself rather than send people to do the fighting for her, something we see in rhaenyra too, which is why she stands by her

Losing Rhaenys and Meleys was utterly devastating. They were a true team and had been to battle before. Neither back down from a fight. The way they looked at each other as they both realized they were going to die was a true warrior’s exit. I don’t know if the future deaths are going to be as noble. RIP Rhaenys and the Red Queen

Rhaenys chose to stay because she saw and she knew she had the chance to injure Vhagar and somewhat incapacitate her and Aemond to fight in the future even at the expense of her and Meleys life.

Daemon had the correct strategy from the beginning. He had ordered Rhaenys to ride with him so both could attack Vhagar simultaneously because she was so big & killing Aemon at the same time. Rhaenys answer was no, he couldn't order her because he wasn't king. Big mistake.

Personally I find Aegon to be one of the most complex/interesting characters on HOTD and I've noticed a lot of people barely recognize it because they hate him so much. Which I find interesting, since it seems they hate him for either being Rhaenyra's enemy or because he's useless. I don't think many people hate him because he raped Dyana, otherwise they'd hate Daemon for killing Rhea. The difference is that Daemon is competent in battle and is saracastic, but Aegon's incompetence is a story in itself

I never realized how emotionally unprepared I was to see dragons kill each other. I feel like the dragons are a bit more domesticated in hotd versus got and it makes it significantly worse seeing their owners bond with them and then they get sent out to fight wars that aren't their own.

So, Vhagar is known as the Queen of the Dragons. She's a female dragon of over 180 years old. I always see people saying "He is huge" and "There's no fighting against him" and assuming she's a male dragon, but she isn't and that's important for the story. Female dragons fiercely defend their riders, more than male dragons that usually just prefer attacking first with no care for the riders. Which makes Vhagar even more dangerous, because if Aemond is at risk, she won't spare anything to keep him safe.

Alyn? Corly’s bastard ? Catelyn stark could never, just another reason Rhaenys is one of the best characters in television history, make no mistake she might have lost to Vhagar but she could have wone Rhaenys is far more experienced and her bond to Meleys is far stronger, Aemond had to hide and catch here of gard if he hadn’t the fight would have been very different.

Keep in mind in the books Meleys was 2v1 them both at the same time

Notice how Rhaenys never commanded Dracarys. She is no kinslayer. She just wants to injure the dragons a bit to not be sent to war again. Whilst Aemond now has 2 1/2 kills. He deserves to only be remembered as a Kinslayer. A disgrace to House Targaryen.

She knew she was going to die. It's more of a 'I'm ready to go now' kinda look, 'ready to rest'. Even the dragon was tired. Great actress, great character! RIP, my queen 👑🐲🔥

Rhaenys HAD to be the one to start it….she had pushed the blacks back so much they had to get some leveling ground. She was advising Rhaenyra I’m sure she felt some responsibility. But now BECAUSE of her death and the manner of it she has protected the Rook. This in turn will help to get their other allies and Daemon’s heads out of their asses.

I can't forgive the show for erasing Elmo and Kermit Tully, the show was cowardly for not being willing to follow through on Muppet Tully power, but here's hoping the now introduced Oscar Tully will actually get to be the badass he is in the books. Now Aemond saying F U to Aegon at Rook's Rest was a nice bit of addition/nuance to the book events, that was brilliant.

Book Rhaenys has black hair because shes a Baratheon. Not all Targaryens have blonde hair.

Alys put the red paste from the Weardwood and gave Daemon to drink, that tree is magical because of the old gods.

Maybe Rhaenys is looking for a good husband for her grand-daughter Rhaena, since Luke is dead and Baela is betrothed to Jace and Joffrey is a bit young for Rhaena, and that's why she's checking out Alyn of Hull. A son of Corlys, if legitimated, could become his heir and Rhaena could become Lady of Driftmark as per their original plan.

Why does nobody understand Sunfyre didnt just plummet to the ground, he is a dragon with wings and can break the fall significantly. Hence why he is not dead.

This is how you could say that Queen Rhaenys and Meraxes die, only the form changed. Very sad for the loss, very angry at Rhaenyra's inaction, now with Aegon incapacitated they will surely seat Aemon on the throne. 3 times Aemon tried to kill him in the same episode!

Meleys was the fastest dragon and has that strategy of attacking underneath to claw at the lungs/belly. Meleys was the one that grabbed Vaghar to then claw and pushed to the ground. If Rhaenys would have taken Daemon seriously before, his plan to team up against Vaghar would have worked.

I was literally hyperventilating watching this entire episode. Aegon never put in enough effort to learn his mother tounge or to improve his combat skills or understanding politics like Aemond did. The show could go up to 4 seasons if done correctly

Meleys never stood a chance of beating Vhagar in a 1v1. So many people aren't understanding what happened in this fight. Meleys didn't knock vhagar down, it's actually the exact opposite. Vhagar was the one who brought the fight down to the ground As vhagar and meleys flew towards each other, Vhagar grabbed Meleys by the leg and broke it, then began dragging meleys down to the ground. Vhagar knew meleys wouldn't be able to take flight again with a broken leg, which would've made her a sitting duck. As they got closer to the ground Vhagar had to release meleys leg so she could start slowing her own descent rate, thus cushioning her landing. Meleys almost touched the ground, but she had just enough time/altitude to flap her wings to create lift and save herself from impact with the ground.

They are both bad, if Rhaenyra wanted it, she could have bent the knee, passed the song of ice and fire prophecy to Alicent sons and go from there, nobody would have died. I can assure you that vhagar is tired and done fighting, i could see it in this episode ... She is just protecting her rider but the next time she faces another dragon, i'm sure she won't win. And my heart shatters for rhaenys,really. that was the person who should have been the queen long time ago and were treated poorely and died fighting for another queen. I think she knew she was on a kamikaze mission. She was the one til now saying never send in the dragons because it’s a nuclear option. She decided that’s the only option left and took it upon herself to do this showing Rhaenyra this is what they have to do. I love the exchanged look of Meleys and her knowing it was the end and thanks for all the memories type of look. I guess Aegon shouldn’t have humiliated Aemond last episode. I feel that he’s still alive but in bad shape because they would’ve shown him dead. Sad to see her and her dragon go. It was truly heartbreaking

It's wild seeing Daemon tripping balls at Harrenhal. He's probably having "Weirwood dreams" (as Jaime did in the books) as Harrenhal was built on a cut-down Weirwood forest, the roots of surviving Weirwoods appear to be working their way through the ruins, and as Alys said, he was sleeping on a bed made from a felled Weirwood. The drink Alys gave him probably adds to it, as he still seemed to be a bit out of it at the meeting at the table.

Also vhagar and myleys both belonged to a married couple previously so they were togther often, so it sucks they had to kill each other.
