Rhaenyra and Daemon receive word of Viserys' death and the coronation of King Aegon, Corlys and Rhaenys choose a side, and Lucerys encounters Aemond at Storm's End... this is my review of episode ten of HOTD, "The Black Queen".

"House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series. A prequel to Game of Thrones (2011-2019), it is the second show in the franchise, created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. Both series are based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by Martin. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are the showrunners. Based on parts of the novel Fire & Blood, the series is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. It portrays the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen war of succession, known as the "Dance of the Dragons"

I like how you address that Daemon is in fact a scumbag with little regard for others. I enjoy his character, but he is not even remotely good. Yes, I know, GRRM says he’s grey and so on, but I have yet to see his “white” sides myself.

Exactly! Fire and Blood is very "tell don't show" regarding Daemon - we're told he's both a hero and a villain but he only does villainous stuff

Apparently they cut all his positive aspects, even the ones they had initially filmed with of him comforting his daughters. I mean, Daemon is a complex character with clear emotional insecurities and vulnerabilities that drive him, which comes through in some really great scenes. All in all, he feels like an open book in ways, and entirely private in others. I think that makes his character interesting, since he can go between sincere and sincerely maniacal at a whim. At the end of the day, the silly articles about why he should be hated just annoy me, as do most overly serious conversations about character inconsistencies. I think that neglect or outright incompetence on part of the writers needs to be blamed for that, since they had a chance to show the loving and loyal aspects of his character.

@@theperson8539 I don't disagree. Daemon is a very complex character and I find him both enjoyable and entertaining. His scenes are some of the best, for sure. Still, I have yet to see his greyness. Loving one's family doesn't really make someone good, as most "villains" do. I mean, one can say that Aemond One Eye is fiercely loyal and even loving towards his family, but I have yet to see people calling him grey. (At least his book version.) The writers could definitely have done a better job of portraying the complexity of the characters. Aegon suffers the most from that. I mean, we saw his ass before we even saw his face (after both of the time jumps), and making all of Mushroom`s claims about him true was just ridiculous, in my opinion. We got a clear hero vs villain story instead, and it sucks, cause the war between the two characters Rhaenyra and Aegon could have been very complex if done right.

1:56 I far preferred "nerdy world building and strategy" to *Drama* . My fear for season two, we will see drama replacing common sense and strategy. So HOTD can get those Emmys. Which is the same trap GOT fell into.

I'm optimistic that we'll see lots of engaging strategy and politics scenes now that the Dance of the Dragons has broken out. This episode gave us just a small taste - discussing current allies, potential allies, number of troops on Dragonstone, etc. My point in the video is that lots of casual viewers don't care about such scenes (unlike us book fans) so the writers need to keep them engaged in other ways - in this instance, it was by introducing tension between Rhaenyra and Daemon.

I think the showrunners and HBO want to avoid that later season GOT dumpster fire as much as possible. They proved it to me with this firsr season and I was skeptical af. Also GOT won their most awards when dealing with the last bit of work George wrote. Either way, viewers pay for subs, not awards. They aren't like Netflix lol

I feel like we will get a healthy balance of the two. Rooks rest has been confirmed and so has dragonseeds and for both those stories to work there needs to be time and pacing, especially considering how some of the dragons toon time to accept riders, most notably Sheepstealer

I haven’t read the books, so only watching the series I LOVED the early episodes where Deamon is gloriously bastardy psychopath that you love to hate but kind of love still. I had NO desire at all for him to become “complex, sympathetic, blah blah” except rare moments of humanity and glimpses of love buried deep beneath. Like when he puts the crown on Viserys head. IDK maybe if I’d read the book I may feel differently…

I don’t see why people are onto Daemon for going straight into battle mode. He’s clearly distraught by what’s going on with Rhaenyra, but he can’t do anything about it, he’s neither a doctor nor a nurse, so instead of wasting time sitting around, he goes straight into organizing their next moves. He doesn’t want to, but he has to, because he’s the most experienced in that field on their side. The whole “what we want vs what we have to do” thing has been a running theme throughout the show. Had they done it Daemon’s way, Rhaenyra would still have her son and his dragon. Because, much like Aemond understood, getting there first matters. Parlaying and discussing with the other side is not an option when their version of peace is to exterminate your side.

I didn't like the strangling scene not because the violence wasn't characteristic of Daemon but because I'd thought harming Targaryen kin, and more specifically Viserys and-his living memory-Rhaenyra, was a line he wouldn't cross. That's what I got from the Dragonstone confrontation in episode 2 and the throne room scene in episode 1-that for all the fucking around he does and aggravation he brings to his family, at the end of the day, he's deeply loyal to his blood. 4:55 Speaking of the parallel to episode 2, I wonder if perhaps Otto insisted he went when originally Alicent intended to do so. And like how Viserys going in episode 2 would've satisfied Daemon's craving for attention and resolved the issue without bloodshed, maybe the Dance could've been prevented had Alicent had personally gone to explain herself. For one thing, Rhaenyra could've cleared up the confusion about Aegon's prophecy. Furthermore, I don't believe that Otto's insistence in episode 2 was really out of concern for Viserys' safety but rather out of wanting to provoke Daemon and further demonstrate how reckless and unfit for rule he is. Similarly, in this episode, I suspect Otto wasn't earnest about peace and intentionally didn't deliver Alicent's message with the best effort to achieve that. I liked the dragons disobeying their riders too. Vhagar's a fucking war dragon that's burned thousands of people. Aemond's an idiot for thinking it would care that there's a difference between a mock chase and a hunt to kill. Ironically in that moment he's exactly the sort of tourney knight Rhaenys described in episode 1 (despite what he says about tourneys): he's never seen war and doesn't understand its consequences.

That's a good critique of the strangling scene tbh. Also - I've never seen anyone make the comparison between the Storm's End chase and the tourney line from Episode 8. Genuinely brilliant observation

Nobody says that daemon is perfect, everyone here in the series is bad, the difference is that daemon doesn't do things in secret like the others, I'm not saying that what he did to Rhaenyra is fine, but he also suffers, everyone there is poor Rhaenyra, just in case. She lost Daemon, she also lost her daughter and her brother, of course, he wanted it in his own way, he just wanted Viserys to keep him by his side, he told her in the first chapter, no one will protect you like me, he told her that Otto is only looking for his own. benefit and there this viserys preferred to believe otto and there are the consequences otto sent alicent to viserys's room and then he married her and now they took the throne from rhaenyra they all do bad things but they all only criticize daemon, otto to how many people He did not threaten in chapter 1x9 and 2 people who were loyal to Rhaenyra died. Alicent realized it and did not care about it when the worker that Aegon took by force was Alicent, she silenced the girl just so that no one would notice. it What does Aegon do? Maybe he knows how Harwin and his father died, but even so, he remains silent because he prefers to have Larys as a clear ally, but his excuse is for the good of the throne and to protect himself and his 2 children, who are from The worst thing for Rhaenyra to marry Daemon doesn't care that Daemon will kill someone innocent just to make Leanor pass for dead. What I don't like is that the writers in the series want women to be weaker than men and in The books is not like that, Rhaenyra and Alicent are more ambitious and if Daemon really wanted the throne, he would have already killed Viserys, it would be much the same as Rhaenyra. No one matters to him, the only thing that matters to him is his family because he knows that Otto and Alicent will not stay still as long as they are a threat to Aegon and Otto and Alicent know that as long as Daemon is on Rhaenyra's side, that does not suit them.

Daemon’s not a lunatic. In the book he is the cautious intelligent one at this meeting. The only changed it so Rhaenyra could look good, instead of the crazy person she is in the book. The wife excuse is simplistic and just downright lazy. His character is more complicated and this situation is more nuanced than that. If they make Daemon look stupid or a moustache twirling villain next season, you can kiss this show goodbye.
