House of the Faun | Pompeii, Italy | Alexander Mosaic | 4K

In the north west area of Pompeii, with a garden view of Vesuvius, was a house the size of a palace. This is the largest house discovered inside the walls of Pompeii. Found inside was a chest of coins, jewelry made from gold, as well as furniture of sculpted marble. Its floors were decorated with intricate mosaics, including what has been described as a masterpiece of ancient art. We will search for meaning in these mosaics, go through some of the ancient roman household objects, as well as clues to the identity of its last inhabitants who died carrying valuables, trying to escape the eruption. Join us as we explore The House of the Faun in the city of Pompeii.

No. They lived in Pompeii after the death of Christ (around 33 AD). The eruption of Mount Vesuvius was in 79 AD.

@@anamarieferrer8382you should have checked the best houses before hand brooo there are lot of empty houses but 5/6 villas that are full of paintings not “stolen” or transported to the Naples museum. But if you don’t have a map you can go around 4 hours without seeing a painting hahaha

For decades I've seen depictions of Alexander TG without attribution. So wonderful to see it all. I was fortunate in visiting the Pompeii Traveling Exhibition while in Phoenix (how fitting!). Stunning, Sobering, Beautiful.

In all likelihood, those decorative columns in the entrance were meant to imitate Hellenistic royal palaces moreso than temples, just like the first-style wall decorations. Really nice video, though :)!

That was amazing. The artwork was top tier, not ancient graffiti. What a beautiful place. The architecture is sophisticated and sound. They used passive systems perfectly. I could picture this home sitting in Hollywood Hills, at present.

Meanwhile I can only imagine what the painting at 9:32 created by Albrecht Altdorfer would look like minutely accurately in a mosaic. And the timestamp doesn't even show the entire painting. Mind boggling. Let's make one! Only a few hundred trillion bits of glass and stone are needed, that's all :)

Wow. I just found your channel an, your narration is one of the easiest I've ever heard to follow and stay engaged with. It's so natural and flowing its actually therapeutic. I can stay absorbed in complex topics like I want to but my mind doesn't have to expend any energy, if that makes sense. Its like my mind can rest and just coast along but I think that's just normal for other people. I camt wait to see what other videos you have because I'm addicted to history. Amazing job, thank you. I just realized now that that's the mind of thing that distinguishes narrators and storytellers. You're definitely a storyteller. I'm playing games while listening and I'm going to listen a few times before watching to see how close my mental images are to reality. I've read that the House of the Faun was even larger than the palace of the Attalid kings in Pergamon, suggesting the immense wealth and aspirations to prestige that must have distinguished whoever commissioned it and first lived in it. The surviving mosaic decorations are precious exemplars of elite Greco-Roman/Italic taste in the late Republican period.

Some of those rings are seal rings for enclosing letters and proving the identity of the sender. That’s why the Cassia one is backwards.

I visited the house of Faun in the late sixties, I can't remember so much because we bought a guide edited by the the Italian Ministery of ( history or culture) the cover was light blue, it helped so much as the houses were numbered but we didn't spend enough time to see it in detail. I was so interested I returned to the spot to see Herculanum and a villa outside Pompeï in early days on the seaside but can' t remember the name

Pompeii could had easily been an exclusive resort for wealthy War Generals as well as merchants all over the region. There is no way any random person would had known such detailed knowledge of Alexander's last battle with King Darius.

Many of the statues and mosaics found in Pompeii and other cities of N. Italy come from Macedonia (Lucius Aemlius Paulus, battle of Pydna of 168 BC, in which the Roman emperor led and which sealed C ' Macedonian War and the final submission of Macedonia to Rome. Thousands of works of art, statues, mosaics, golden wreaths, columns, many times entire buildings were transferred to Rome. The gold and wealth of Macedonia was so great that indeed it was the beginning of Gloria Romae. The mosaic of Alexander the Great depicting the battle of Issus was brought intact from Macedonia. Italian archaeologists say they are Roman copies, but they too often say .. nonsense.

Bizarre and childish comment full of bs and totally false statement !! 😂😂😂 None of the statues of Pompei ( which is located in Southern Italy and not Northern, start on learning your elementary geography) came from macedonia, the nearly greek region that never had any significance in art or in culture, never !! The statues were all made by Roman artists and the mosaics as well. The Romans were the greatest in mosaic art, no ancient people were ever able in doing modaics out Romans, so your statement is pure garbage, a childish lie !! Macedonia had only two things, warriors and sheeps, and nothing else, their people were too rude and ignorant to dream on being only a 10% of Roman greatness ! Grow up, you need it .

Unlike Romans the greeks were incapable to do something durable in time, only a very few statues have got to us , not to talk of their primitive crappy architecture and engineering. The Romans were just from another galaxy in comparison, sorry for your childish frustration -:) !!
