"House of the Rising Sun" is a folk/blues song of mysterious origin. It seems to have popped up all over the world throughout history and over time has become the melody we know and love today. I hope you enjoyed this bass-ier version of it. Thanks for watching!

HUGE SHOUT OUT to my PATREON community for helping create this music video and THANK YOU for watching!
LYRICS:
"There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God I know I'm one"
"My Mother was a tailor,
Sewed my new blue jeans
Daddy was a gamblin' man,
Way down in New Orleans"
"The one and only thing a gamber ever has
Is a suitcase and a trunk
The one and only time a gambler's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk"
"Mothers tell your children
Not to do what I've done
Spend your life in fear and misery
In the House of the Rising Sun"

Geoff, you had asked during the premiere why people were requesting this specific song for you, particularly since most covers are higher and more "screamy". My two cents is that there's something about you that feels very old-school and classic - maybe in part because there were so many great old singers who were basses or baritones. This means that you're going to keep getting requests for tunes that are more than just music - they're cultural (well, American culture). 16 Tons and this one are perfect examples. Something about you taking classic songs and bringing them back to life for a new generation just feels right!

I'm always in awe with Geoff's singing. High or low range, he is phenomenal! However, every time there are 4 or 5 Geoffs, I find subtle differences that make me forget for a few seconds that there is one singer. His voice is the gift and the "Geoffs " are the pretty bow. Lame analogy? Perhaps. But I said what I said. 👏👏👏👏

I am constantly blown away by the the growth and evolution of Geoff's singing, sound, and arrangement in these songs. I have never seen someone grow so much with each new song they put out on KZfaq. Usually you start to see a pattern, but you do pop, country, folk,... you just grow and change in everything. Your bass parts get more tricky, and the back-up parts get more crisp and precise. Your sound and arrangement stays simple, but it gets more clean and spot on with each new song. And the nuance of each video is just fantastic. Whether it be outfits and background, or heads sitting on a desk, the video work is just fantastic. I share these videos with my whole family, not because of your low bass, but because of the entire magnificence and entertainment in the entirety of the video. Most of my family are musicians, singers, and songwriters, and to know the level of work that goes into something like this, and to see someone do it so well and still grow with each video is just so fun to watch. I am in total amazement, good sir! Thank you for sharing another amazing video.

My father is a bass singer, and his 3 brothers also sing, their voices ranging upward to my uncle George who is a barbershop tenor, so hearing you sing brings me to such a happy place, remembering all the family gatherings when they would all sing, along with my aunt Cathy- second soprano. I used to have a very good range from first soprano to baritone, and sang for the first half of my life nearly every day. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to sing for over 20 years now due to a terrible virus which left me with nodes on my vocal cords, but my love of music still continues to grow, even as I can no longer participate actively in it's creation. Listening to talented individuals helps, and you, sir, are incredibly talented and bring me incredible joy. Thank you!

I don't understand the people hating this song for the composition. This song has many itterations. It could even date as far back as the 1500's. If you don't like it listen to the hundreds of renditions. Also why do you not like it when he makes the song his own. What did you want a copy.
@Rebecca_English
@Rebecca_English 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I love this more traditional rendition. This song has been covered so many times by so many great artists. People like Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone ... And the list goes on! I think most people think of the Animals' rendition as being the definitive one because of that gorgeous riff they added, but it's much older than that. I think the lyrics were written someone around the American Civil War, but you're right - the melody is much older.

@@sherimcdaniel3491 no, not at all! I've been doing a little bit of reading about the history of this song. Although we don't know exactly where it came from, it pulls thematic elements from the 1500s ballad "The Unfortunate Rake” and melodic elements from the 1600's song "Matty Groves". The earliest mention of the current form of the song seems to be 1905, but that's anecdotal.
