"When my brother was lord of this castle, he answered Robb's call and hailed him King in the North. And where was "King" Robb when the ironborn attacked this castle? When they threw my wife and children in prison and brutalized and killed our subjects? Taking up with a foreign whore, getting himself, and those who followed him, killed." Rocky28447 Because Glover would have given him the whole you're-an-up-jumped-smuggler snobbery thing, typical of his (Glover's) social rank. Or at least, that's probably what Davos *thought* , after a career with Stannis where he was getting that every other day, from virtually everyone (apart from Stannis himself) who was jealous of his position as Hand. Besides, when Davos gave that speech to Lyanna Mormont, he was able to play the card of Jeor Mormont fighting the Death Army _ whether she joined Jon or not, she was hardly going to disavow her grandfather. Also, Glover was essentially speaking from bitterness about his brother's death, so no speeches would have turned him. Ironically, Robb never let his brother down _ he wanted to send troops to help Galbart, but was talked out of it by _ surprise, surprise _ Roose Bolton. Bolton was setting the stage for betrayal long before the Red Wedding.

AgainstAllGods Yeah, remember how that worked out for Bran? The North certainly does _ it has him to thank for the Ironborn. Bran's other bits of strategic brilliance include: (1) Sending Rickon and Osha to the Umbers; (2) Going out to play with the Dead Army on his own, thus obliterating the Three-Eyed Von Sydow, the Children, his direwolf Summer, and Hodor/Willas. And I would love to be wrong about this, but I just bet that, having found the truth about Jon's birth, he'll make a bee-line to pass the Wall at Castle Black, blissfully oblivious to the Death-mark on his arm that will bring down the Wall, and with it, all humanity. (I think that's why the Season 7 trailers keep showing those ominous shots of the Castle Black Gate rising.) I like Bran, but honestly... ;-)

Forseeing the Umbers betrayal was unlikely. The main reason they joined was because of the wildling threat not out of love for Ramsey. The Umbers wouldnt defeat the wildlings alone so were likely desperate and scared.

@M G not entirely sure but I think it was a couple generations. Aerys didn't have any and all his relatives died in a fire. Targaryens. A fire. Safe to assume none of them were special like Danaerys so none of them ever hatched dragons, which means they held the throne for at least two generations and won against a rebellion from bastard targaryens, too.

And this is exactly what doesn't happen in the books, the whole point of northern houses is that honor gets you killed but it also ensures an everlasting loyalty to your cause. D&d didn't understand that because they're idiots
@thomaschristopherwhite9043
@thomaschristopherwhite9043 2 жыл бұрын
@@revanruler6404 I think it's nice they explored this part. Rob did lose the Karstarks in the name of honor. So that makes your interpretation inconsistent. That's the whole thing with the Starks right? They're honorable to a fault. Even if it means turning your back on houses that have been loyal to you for centuries. In this case you can see how Robb's missteps have caused the northern houses to be cautious of their allegiances. Especially when going against the crown. Remember that when houses commit they're not just putting the peasants in their domains at risk. They're also risking their family members and therefore risking the future of their houses. The Northern houses understanding that Jon is a bastard and that his army is padded with wildlings will make anyone question his ability to win. That and there are only a handful of them compared to the Bolton army.

This scene is pretty important imo. It highlights the fact that while most people have been brushing off Rob's breaking of his oath to Frey as teenage pettiness and still see him as being an overall good guy whose sole sin was to refuse a marriage arranged for political reasons for the sake of "true love", fact is that he was comletely selfish and stupid. His selfishness cost him his life along with that of thousands of others who followed him faithfully. I think this scene really gives the real measure of that: Rob was entrusted by the entire North and betrayed that trust, bringing profound dishonor on house Stark.

Robb didn't lose the war. Edmure Tully did by not bringing Tywin Lannister into the west of the Trident. If he had done that instead of keeping his army east of the Trident, Tywin wouldn't have been able to aid King's Landing and Stannis would have taken King's Landing, killed Joffrey, Tommen, Cersei, Lancel, and the Starks would have won the war.

One my very favorite GOT scenes. Tim McInnerny (Glover) nailed it. The nuance in his inflection is brilliant: there is no malice here, only desolation. He mourns the state of his House, the state of the North, and the state of House Stark. In his voice is the coldness of an honorable Lord who mourns the loss of honor.

@gweiloxiu9862
@gweiloxiu9862 7 жыл бұрын
+Kalladorn I'm starting to think A Song of Ice and Fire/AGoT is its self, about fallen honor and the attempts to restore it. Roberts Rebellion is all about avenging honor. Ned and Howland Reed literally stab the finest knight in Westros in the back. Ned Starks sword "ice" is used by him to behead Will the deserter of the Nights Watch, out of duty and honor. The same sword is used to behead Ned, again to avenge duty and honor. It is melted and reforged as both "Widow Maker", for Geoffrey to apply his own warped sense of honor, and " Oathkeeper", Jamie Lannisters honor given to perhaps the current finest knight in westros, the highly honorable Brienne of Tarth. Daenarys and Jon Snow both struggle with honor through their storylines. Even subplots highly involve honor, Ser Jorah, Lord Glover, Baristan Selmey. The real danger in the entire saga is honor. The pieces to defeat the white walkers are all there. But will honor stop them from falling into place? Jon Snow cannot ally with Daeny for as long as she is allied with Asha Greyjoy. Even if he got beyond his own feelings, his Northern Lords (especially Glover), would abandon him for allying with the same Ironborn faction that tortured the North in the aftermath of the war of five kings.

The way that he utters “King In The North” says it all! Absolutely heartbreaking when you realise that from a strategic move, Robb’s decision to marry Talisa ultimately doomed the Starks. There may have been a revolt of some kind down the line, but this took things to a whole new level. This is one of my favourite scenes of Season 6, as it highlights the tragedy of Robb Stark and the flaw he had as a character (not how he was written.) My biggest gripe… there should have been a scene where Jon and Sansa discussed and mourned Robb/Ned. Even Arya should have shared those moments once her and Jon reunited! Oh well, it is what it is!

I totally agree. There also should have been a scene where Arya and Sansa should have grieved their mother. I know a lot of people disliked Cat, (I flipping loved her) but she loved her children more than anything. This scene also gives an explanation to those who choose to ignore this actually happened. This is laid out as plain as day as to why they were hesitant to help, Lord Glover was a spokesman for many of the other houses we didn't get a chance to see. They were not playing about who they would follow in terms of being Northern or foreign. FF one season later and everyone seems to forget this attitude is the North, yet, all of a sudden they're hated for being Xenophobic because they refused to accept Daenerys without knowing her.

One of my favourite characters of the entire show actually. Yes she did love her children more than anything, which is why when Robb was killed, her scream said it all. Her supposed last child now dead was the worst thing for her to witness, and at that moment, she was ready to die :( Yeah this scene in 6x07 highlighted the matter clear as day. He later regretted not joining the Battle Of The Bastards, but he shouldn’t be blamed for questioning Jon and Sansa at least a little bit. Lord Glover even said to Jon in 7x02 “we called your brother king! And he rode south, and lost his kingdom!” They’re not gonna forget the tragedy that occurred at the Red Wedding. Of course they’re going to question Jon! Why would they accept Daenerys when they’re aware of what her father was? They are of course going to be suspicious! It’s in their nature to be suspicious of outsiders. Although Daenerys became the Mad Queen, their resentment towards her aid was ironically justified because although they needed her help against the Night King, The Northerners also saw her as a potential threat, which they spoke out on!

This scene also explains why Jon, not Sansa, was the one they rallied behind. Sansa is still too entitled for her own good. She really did expect that North to just fall behind her. Jon came across as more pragmatic. He knew Robb's mistakes had muddied the Stark name.
@BunkerBuddy
@BunkerBuddy 6 жыл бұрын
Muddied name or not, it is their obligation to answer the call. Failure to do so would bring more shame to their houses than Rob's poor choices had brought. Even if Jon lost the battle for Winterfell and the Stark name was erased permanently, people would remember for many generations which houses failed to come to their sworn Lord's side. I do agree though that this scene shows that Jon has the respectful tone that makes people rally behind him. While Sansa comes in hard with the "Its your duty to obey" argument, Jon shows actual diplomacy and mutual respect.

House Glover is pledged to House Stark. Not to bastards and wives of Boltons. Plus, the Boltons helped take the castle back from the Ironborne. @coolman5242

+tpl It actually is an obligation. Sure Robb fucked up, but just because of Robb's mistake doesn't mean his loyalty to House Stark didn't cease. He can refuse to answer the call and stay on the winning team, but that would severely tarnish his house's reputation even if the remainder of the Stark army lost. How would other houses trust House Glover after shunning members of a Great House? Noble houses are shown to follow their Lords to death throughout the show, with the most famous example being Stannis. Sure Robb's poor decisions screwed him and his family over but he and the realm know that wasn't intentional. From a moral perspective Robett was right to deny Jon and Sansa for the safety of his family and his men, but political-wise it was not a smart decision in the long run.

Your entire trustworthiness as an organization depended on you respecting your pledges. If you didn't answer a call, all the alliances you had were jeopardized because everyone saw you were not to be trusted. If you chose not to help someone to save yourself now, you take the risk of dying later because no one came to help you then.

I love the internal conflict in the show. It wasn't just North vs South during Robb's reign... we also got to see the internal Northern politics, and how Robb's mistakes and shortcomings had long lasting effects on the North. Mistakes have consequences. The show fucked that up when Cersei was able to blow up the Sept without any push back. D&D wanted the "cool" visuals of the Sept explosion, but didn't want Cersei to have to deal with the consequences of her actions (ie be thrown into a rebellion). Instead of writing a clever way to have both the explosion and Cersei's continued reign, the writers lazily ignored that blowing up the King's Landing would have ramifications from the nobles and commoners under Cersei's command.

Season 6 was Jon Snow's peak. This scene is proof of that. He behaves like a real leader here, for which he was proclaimed the King of the North in the future. In my opinion, it was a huge mistake to make Jon submissive to Daenerys. He, as the proclaimed King, must defend the interests of his people to the end and fight for them, as in this scene. And he knelt before Dany and voluntarily renounced the title of King, greatly disappointing the northern lords. D&D ruined this character in the last two seasons. I hope these two don't touch his solo series

I was always under the impression that him kneeling was a sign of a true leader. They could have handled it better, but john could not win a battle against Danny and her dragons. So he made the smart move and pledged allegiance.. for now. The north always mocked The starks ancestor who knelt before the dragons. But they forget it was that move that saved the north from destruction and allowed them to live largely independent from the rest of the kingdoms. At the end of the day what matters more, that the person with the right last name sits on the throne? Or that the people in general get to live in peace and prosper.

Thank you! This was without a doubt the dumbest shit I've seen in this series, and there have been plenty of stupid moments. How can a man who accepts a title completely ignore the fact that Lord Glover here, represents everything these people are? Loyal, cold and distrustful if they lose their faith in you. Jon hears this man's words and a season later he abdicates without telling anyone and actually believes they would grin and bare it?! On what planet does this make sense? Like at every turn these people are telling us how they feel. Folks can hate all day long on Sansa Stark, but her allegiance to them and only them is why she was heavily favored. They used Jon to further the storylines for both Daenerys and Sansa. Daenerys was the road to paranoia and homicidal tendencies and Sansa's was her ability to actually run Winterfell on her own, pretty well, without much familial assistance. Jon stopped being an actual character in season six, going forward, he was a plot device.

The fact that an unrelated House wept and mourned Ned Stark as if he was one of their own speaks volumes about the respect and honour House Stark enjoyed in the North. That is why they so readily followed his son and proclaimed him their King. To see this loyalty extinguished is depressing, but also entirely justified from the Northern Houses' perspective. Imagine your House suffering heavy losses and being spent after a war. All you want to do is withdraw and rebuild in peace, especially since you know that a tough winter is coming. Then suddenly, the small remnants of the House responsible for much of the misery that fell upon your own House turns up and asks that you fight alongside people you despise to overthrow your current Warden of the North who helped you reclaim your lands. It's a rather unreasonable thing to ask and who can seriously blame Lord Glover for rebutting them here? The fact that Jon Snow is understanding of this situation and doesn't blame him at all in the aftermath of the Battle, speaks volumes about his own sense of honour too. To that end, he proved that he was Ned Stark's son.

His reaction to Sansa calling out to Lord Glover tells the story. Sansa doesn't understand things in the same way as Jon does, she acts entitled and expects House Glover to fall on its knees and forget all that's gone before. The politics of this scene are pretty interesting if you think about it. There's no denying that Robb made mistakes. Allowing Theon to go home resulted in the Ironborn invasion. However, he was ready to march his army north to take it back but Roose Bolton convinced him not to and said he and Ramsay would handle it. Robb trusting people like Theon, Roose, Walder Frey... That is truly what killed him.

actually in the books most of the north houses are waiting the stark to regain the north and joined the stark back and avange the red weddings and kick bolton's asses. Also there are so many thing missing and things that have been changed in bad for exemple in the books, the umber joined the boltons because great john umber was held captive and it's the same for other north houses I can't wait for the books to come out.
@Darksaviour
@Darksaviour Жыл бұрын
Ya the books do a better job of making the world seem massive. The houses of the North are waiting for the stairs to return and hate the Boltons. They only rule through fear. Stannis thankfully has a much better chance of winning in the books because while GRR Martin takes forever to write… he actually knows how to right characters and make the world feel alive. While after season 5 the world felt smaller, characters just vanished, they did Stannis so dirty in the show…

Fun fact, the actor playing lord Glover here is the same actor who plays captain darling and other characters from the blackadder comedy series that aired in the 80s in mostly Britian, which also starred Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie (Most known for playing dr.house from House)

Robb Stark was an oathbreaker, that's his number one defining characteristic. Was he a good commander? Sure. But what people remember is he broke his oaths. He failed to protect his bannermen while their soldiers marched south, he failed to uphold his oath to marry the Frey girl (House Frey is arguably the most powerful Riverlands house independent from alliances), he forced his uncle into marriage to cover for his selfishness. Robb Stark was a terrible king, he destroyed his house.

@@turmuthoer yeah but the Targaryens tried to wipe out the Starks for no reason which is why they rebelled, the Starks rulled the North wisely for thousands of years and the great crime that makes Glover not suport them is simply that they lost one war after thousands of years of just rule, Glover sucks in the show.

When they hail you King and you accept you live for your people. The fact that you are unmarried is an advantage which can be used to help your realm. On the other hand if you're like 'nah, I'm alright, gonna marry this lowborn because I love her' then you're not worthy of the honor bestowed upon you. Think of Daenerys when she married Hizdahr zo Loraq even though she loved Daario Naharis.

Man from the start I didn't like Sansa's approach and attitude. She had such a displaced lack of respect for Jon's abilities and it made her so unlikable. This is why Glover's response is so perfect to me, to see her pish posh posturing on Glover's oaths slam her in the face. She wasn't gonna win favor that way and that's why Jon winced the way he did when she tried to pull rank on him. It's a good moment and Glover's added context to Rob's failure to keep his vows is made all the more apparent on how badly he screwed up by not doing what was right for his people first.
