Operation Excess, or when 2 entire air forces failed to sink a single carrier, followed by the Illustrious Blitz, or when 2 entire air forces failed to sink a stationary target.

I would argue that was only because they didn't torpedo her. Bigger picture this was a giant W for the US. Not sound opportunistic, but the lessons we learned about the reality of modern anti-ship bombing and the total inadequacy of so called modern AA allowed us to start a crash program to adopt better light and medium AA before we got into the war. It probably save our fleets bacon in the second half of 1942 and on. Yes, it could have been worse. We, Americans, owe the British a debit of gratitude for that.

@@navyreviewerI agree. I also think another important aspect of the Mediterranean war that the Americans noticed was that the British method of having fleet Air cover provided by the Navy's carriers was far more effective than the Italian method of solely relying on land based air forces.

It may be worth noting that 1940's stalled Hitler-Franco 'negotiations' were aided by German spymeister Admiral Canaris, who loved Spain-the-country and not Hitler and the Nazis. Canaris fed Franco negotiating points against Hitler, telling Franco "ask for this" and "ask for that" and "insist on receipt first, not later after negotiations." This frustrated Adolf to the point of quitting, and Canaris' main argument was fulfilled - "Hitler's allies are much worse off than Hitler's enemies." It was something all of Eastern Europe had to face, but none of them had Canaris feeding them particular wisdom. Canaris was found out a few years later and executed, a true and long-time traitor to Adolf but did have long-term German and Spanish interests in mind.

Once more the use of armoured decks on aircraft carriers by the R.N. saved the Illustrious from sinking.

Nice reconstruction of one episode of the battle of the Mediterrean sea. I really appreciate your works. There was no match between Italian fleet and English force, for Italian side there are only some episode of brave and skilled. One of them is the Alexandria raid in 1941. I would like to see, if it is possibile, other two episodes of Italian forces during the WW2. These are the battle of Cheren (also known as the Battle of Keren) and the Charge of the "Savoia Cavalleria" at Izbushensky. Thank you

Why were submarines not used to engage the Royal Navy more? Too dangerous? Did they have to surface to launch torpedoes?
@zoranocokoljic8927
@zoranocokoljic8927 23 күн бұрын
Submarines of the period were slow, even on surface. They could follow a merchat ship, but warships would simply outmaneuvre them and use their bigger guns while out of range. The only way a submarine ould torpedo a battleship was if it run into it by chance or laid in ambush. (Of course, submarines would plan their course (no pun intended) to maximise the chance od running into enemy. Still, usually it was sheer luck if they did).

@@zoranocokoljic8927 sorry but fockin no. Subs were used in deep sea, Medi is not so they were easily detected. That's why.

@@ragnar217 The Italians had one of the largest submarine fleets at the start of the war, over 100, designed to fight in the Med. They tried, but largely failed.

Is there any explanation how none of 7 torpedos can find a target?
@samareck2885
@samareck2885 24 күн бұрын
They aren't homing torpedoes, so its all based on how well the operator aims them. I have no idea how much a rough sea like this could effect torpedoes. On one hand they are small, but on the other hand they are pretty quick

If the target changes course or speed in the long period while the torpedo is approaching, even the best-aimed torpedo will miss.

@triumphbobberbiker complete disorganisation Not only is the Navi running clueless from port to port with nearly no impact and losing unbelievable amounts of tonnage, but they are also incompetent in terms of spotting the enemy and in the area of navel aviation. Only after germany comes to italies help the royal navy suffers significant loses

@erkutkoksal1913 23 күн бұрын
You must hear of the report by RN that states it will cost less to push italy to germany than spending resources for supporting/reinforcing them.
@triumphbobberbiker
@triumphbobberbiker 23 күн бұрын
Nothing of what you list has anything to do with competence or incompetence, rather with a severe shortage/inadequacy of means and resources. Labelling the Italian Navy as incompetent in 'naval aviation' when it did not have a naval aviation at all is absurd (it never had a single operational aircraft carrier, either). Also, it is inaccurate to say that the Italy's naval successes only came thanks to the Germans, witness the sinking of two British battleships in Alexandria, the raids in Suda Bay and Gibraltar etc. In none of those operations the Germans played any part worth mentioning. If you really wish to blame someone as incompetent, well that should be the duce, who was aware of Italy's lack of resources and opted to throw her into the war regardless.
