As part of the Houseplant 101: Back to Basics series, I decided to do a fairly robust overview of fertilizing houseplants, including what fertilizer is, why to fertilize your plants, the difference between organic and synthetic fertilizers, and more.
If you've been following along over the past two years on 'Plant One On Me', you'll have noticed I covered fertilizing before (Ep 12: • Best Fertilizers + Fer... and Ep 50: • How to Fertilize House... ), but this will go more in-depth while still staying on a foundational level. If you want to go more in-depth into fertilizing and troubleshooting micro and macronutrient deficiencies in houseplants, for example, check out my Houseplant Masterclass at www.houseplantmasterclass.com. Great news is you learn while being able to support the channel in the process!

1:24 - Why do houseplants need fertilizer?
2:30 - When you want to fertilizer your plant

6:32 - Soil amendments
7:08 - NPK Value
9:33 - What the fertilizer numbers and ratios mean
12:11 - Organic vs synthetic fertilizers
18:38 - Other micro and macronutrients
19:12 - How much fertilizer should I use?
23:52 - Organic vs synthetic fertilizer: what is better?

You don't even know how much I appreciate the pure professionalism of this channel. The physical relief I felt when she acknowledged that not all people who watch live in the States was ridiculous. So many US channels seem to forget that due to their native language, their content is far more international than just American. Thank you so much.

I'm very pleased that it's meaningful for you. The reality is, as you shared, that there are so many folks outside of the U.S. that watch that it's becoming increasingly important to become proficient in a broader language...even in my book I include both C and F degrees!

Yes, but in fairness Zank. Please take care to remind people of your point (which I find to be a good one) that is likely overlook because each geographical region has its own climate challenges and even its own soil needs. The matter of keeping houseplants is rather unnatural, too. For it is us, humans, who bring them into our inorganic spaces. Again, great point but it also could have its nuances if someone offers broad recommendations that are not applicable to a specific region. The backlash can be brutal. Therein may lye the reluctance of some who do not acknowledge our interest from a global perspective.

Zank Apfel I understand. Nor was it taken as a criticism, it was taken as an excellent point that I myself thought was noteworthy and in fact brilliant!! Plant people share our love of perpetuating life, and specifically, plant life... and that’s all around awesome!!!!!

It's not very clear or detailed, a lot of the answers amount to repeating the questions. Q: What is a gentle fertiliser? It's a more gentle fertiliser
@davidjduerr
@davidjduerr 2 жыл бұрын
@@sab_8321 seemed pretty straight forward to me, gentler means less potent if you need an example think of alcohol, hard liquor is much stronger where as a beer is going to be “gentler”. If you’re drinking hard liquor you’ll need less to feel intoxicated than you would if you were drinking beer. If you need an explanation as to why it comes down to ingredients and amount of ingredients. More is stronger, less is gentler.

@summerrayneoakes 5 жыл бұрын
I think if you're removing a lot of the soil, I would still wait at least a couple weeks. If you're transplanting it, I would actually suggest more of a soil activator or something like biotone to help with the shock of transplant.

Horizontal brown striations, and cut marks that look like a bug is chewing on them. 2: some leaves have small circular colorations on the leaves. Also, the backs of some leaves have silvery coloring. Hello and thank you for the v detailed walkthrough on fertilizing. I have a few questions and was wondering if you have any experience with the below: 1) usage used tea leaves or water soaked in used tea leaves (I presume these are considered amendments as well) - are they also “surefire” ways to get bugs as you mentioned? Because I’m also aware of tea being a good repellent for certain bugs. 2) watering plants with water used to wash rice - some people in the East/Asia use that as an amendment that provide a natural boost as well. Wondering if you have experience that this also affects bug presence I guess the general question would be plant based vs animal source amendments - any pros and cons? Thank you!! Bel

Hey there, your service to the plant world is much appreciated. Im begining to believe that these plants have found a new way to communicate their needs through your platform. Are you open to a livestream tour of our botanic garden and offering a few of your recommendations? (We can discuss whatever seems fair in return)

Another wonderfully informative video. Thank you for that. When it comes to Bonide products, for the most part if it has a purple field behind the company logo it is a synthetic product; if it has a tan field, it is organic, and will say Organic clearly on the front label. I have come to use many of their products.

Agreed! Including, the organic amendment of up-cycling fish aquarium water or Aquaponics. I have a 90 gallon aquarium and while my Chinese Evergreens love to be watered with that water, fungus gnats love that rich organic waste-water, too. Also, that water isn’t meant for plants like palms or cacti, as this will certainly facilitate root-rot! Love the channel, Summer💕

Thank you so much for all of this amazing information!! I wondered, can most all house plants be fertilized using a home made eggshell water fertilizer? i recently stumbled across a video showing the ability to grow a pothos plant in water, and the fertilizer being used was eggshell water. But i wondered if the eggshells would provide adequate nutrients for most house plants? Thank you!

Great video, loved it! I have another question though. How do you fertilize the plants that you water through hydrospikes and similar? Do you just fill up the containers with the fertilizer mix instead?

Hi Summer, thank you so much for this wonderful video! I grow orchids and as you may know they require a lot of especial care. I am currently using an 3-1-5 organic fertiliser. I am a little concerned about the media breaking down faster by using an organic fertiliser, but my husband is really terrified of chemicals and for that reason he doesn't like synthesised fertilisers. Any advice or insights? Love your content so much!

thank you so much for this information. I just started taking care of houseplants and I no longer have planted tanks. and I have some planted tank fertilizers left, N-P-K, iron and a seachem flourish in separate bottles. I really don't want to waste them and was wondering if I can use them for my houseplants and how much to use.

Anyway i enjoy watching some of your videos very knowledgeable you leave not much gaps in logic and are really good presenting the information. One last question i am wondering about wouldn't it be cheaper if they just made fertilizers in powder form. With the NPK value adding up exactly to 100 so there is no filler water or other unnecessary stuff when buying fertilizer? I mean sure it makes the customer have to know how to measure out / dilute the fertilizer properly into the right concentration but you get so much more fertilizer and really not have to buy fertilizer very often. Like with acres of land you wouldn't want small spray bottles or gallon containers of fertilizer you want it in powder form huge bags that you dilute to spray over the whole acres /farm land. Similar for pesticide/fungicides /insecticides if your having issues in your field you want huge bags and dilute it yourself. Example 10-10-10 means 10% nitrogen , 10% Phosphorus , 10% potassium with 70% filler so 70% is just diluted water stuff you dont really need. The synthetic fertilzers at least you got higher N P K values in the same ratios but more concentrate but still not the best for large projects. 20-20-20 synthetic is the same as 10-10-10 organic but still you have 40% filler to 70% filler why have filler?
