Yes plant burnout is definitely a thing and I can’t wait for your video about it. I’ve gone through it a lot in the past year or so and have noticed that when my depression gets really bad, I tend to have a sudden urge to get rid of all my plants and I’ll often neglect them for a while. I definitely have found that making my plant routine more simple has helped keep this a hobby and not a chore, as you say! Thanks for all the tips! I LOVE using terrariums/ greenhouses because like you said, plants in those need less frequent care so when my mental health isn’t peachy and I neglect my plants, they tend to be okay. I’ve also found that having plants in leca, moss, or pon has the same effect!

Going through plant burnout right now! With it warming up so much, I just want to spend all of my free time outside & I’m noticing that my plants are getting a bit neglected. To make it easier on myself, I’ve been going through my collection and listing any of the ones I’m not that in love with for sale locally. It’s been thinning it down to a manageable number and it’s been a lot of fun making some money and seeing how thrilled people are to add things into their collection that no longer sparked joy for me. 💙

I’ve felt it many many times. Almost every time I move I get so overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of them that I just want to sell them instead of go through the trouble of moving them. The best way I’ve found to combat that burnout is to bottom water more frequently so I don’t have to stress about them drying out and sometimes if the weather permits, just putting them outside for a bit makes it less crowded in the house and honestly they usually like it outside better. However I live in california where the weather is quite nice during the spring and very early summer so if you’re in a more hostile environment I would not suggest leaving them outside for too long. Love your videos harli and would looove to see a thrift shopping one!

@Harli G When my friends ask me for advice on how to care for a growing collection, I always recommend grouping plants by the care they need until you really recognize them and get to know them better. ie put all your diva plants together that need to be checked often, put your easy ones together that you can kind of forget about, put your ones that need almost no water etc. Then you can care by group I call it :) (hope that makes sense. LOVE your videos!!)

My 3 largest pothos (a golden, a jade and a marble) get a root prune every 2-3 years. Then I drop it back in a little lower in the basket and top dress with fresh soil. Every year they get a drastic hair cut, but not as drastic as Harli gave hers. I am just cutting above the areas that have dropped leaves over the winter from the dry heat. I generally root the cuttings for friends and family. I love these resilient and beautiful plants. As to burn-out I mostly keep snake plants and aroids. They can take some neglect when I am needing a day or two off to restore my energy. Sometimes I just sit and admire them and after a bit I want to get up and fuss over them. They are my "Super Prozac" cure for the blues.

You're soooo cute 😭😭 Back on topic haha I loved when you cut those leaves off of that Calathea Orbifolia! I actually had a Calathea Whitestar from last year, my absolute favorite plant! But when we went into winter, I wasn't yet equipped with a growth lamp, so the poor sucker was affected by that, but also spider mites 😫😫 all the leaves died back, but what was left was a green base. I actually abandoned this plant at some point lmao but the dude started growing back! I kept it because I fucking knew that the tiny green spot meant that it was still alive, and now it has two little leaves again. This method definitely works for some plants 👍👍

I totally chomp off my zz plant that I've had for 10 years and the stalks are sitting in various pretty jars, looking "artistic " in my opinion LOL. So I can totally identify with you when you cut back on the pothos. Love your mason jar and the full jar of pothos. I wish I was as confident as you, I was so darn guilty! You saved me! I'm free now!!! No more regrets. Plants are meant to make me HAPPY! Much prefer the stalks in water and enjoying changing water and waiting for it to push out roots and if it doesn't, all good. One of your hacks that I never thought about it bringing up the humidity was sticking your water propagating plants in your cabinet. So smart you are! I know that you probably can't answer this due to your popularity but... For anyone that water propagates pothos does it make a difference how long your vine is? I recently tried maybe a 12 leaf vine and it would not grow roots. Maybe I was inpatient and nervous but after three weeks I ended up cutting them into smaller pieces. Loved this video thanks Harli for helping us all out.

I did the same thing with my calathea pinstripe! It was given to me by a friend and when I took it home the leaves just kept drying up and browning so I just continued to care for it the way i did with my other plants and let the leaves do what it was doing. When the new growth came out it adapted to my care so now i don’t use distilled water to water it, i only use water from the hose whenever i water all my plants 😀

Thank you so much for this video, I really enjoyed it 😊. I had plant burnout for most of last year and many of my plants went weeks without water. I gave everyone slow release fertiliser and just gave them a really good soak about once a month and it just about kept them ticking over. I've spent a lot of time this year repotting so they don't need as much watering and I've changed my orchid setup so they no longer need to be taken to a sink and rinsed through. I also now water with one of those tanks designed for spraying weeds that you pressurise with a hand pump and it only takes about 15 minutes to do 60 plants. My goal for this year is to get rid of any that I'm not in love with and only buy plants that make me happy. I'll also be working on how they're displayed so that I'm making the most of how gorgeous they are.

I lost about 10m long pothos vines due to covid. A hanging suspension for a client with about 40 pothos across the wall hanging from a floor above all the way to the ground. Clients wouldnt let me in to water them, so the leaves all died off. Cut it all back to the base of the plant with a feed, clients got super angry at me for "killing the plant", when it was their fault.... Got about 2m back already, looking super lush and wonderful.

Plant burn out sucks. I feel ya. I work 70hours a week and when I get home I can only handle a few plant projects then I'm dead. I love the short cuts. I totally get the saucer water for a root bound plant. I have one right now just living in the shower😂 I would love a thrift video!

Thank you so much for this 🙏 I love the concept of this video. Sometimes I get so focused on trying to keep my plants looking healthy and beautiful (obviously incredibly important), but it can be overwhelming and I forget why I got the plant in the first place… to make both of us happy 😊
