A friend of mine took in a roommate to help make ends meet. His roommate was a older gentleman from South Africa who was working as a substitute teacher. He was renting a room only charging him $400 dollars a month. Everytime it was rent time there was an emergency. He had to leave town suddenly, or he was sick, or someone died. Literally, several member of his family passed away suddenly back to back, month after month, right when it was time to pay rent. My friend is a nice guy and even let the man close out his storages and bring his remaining belongings in the house. The guy was a hoarder. He had his old broke down cars towed to the house and begged my friend to let him put them under the garage (because the HOA wouldn't alow them out with flat fires and not working). He said he would have them repaired in one week. One week turned into two years. He had the entire garage loaded with a brokedown car and boxes and clothes. He had the kitchen loaded with stuff from wall to wall. I was sent a picture of the inside of his bedroom and he had the room filled wall to wall where you had to turn sideways to get through. I was shocked. Completely shocked. Finally my friend told him to remove the car. You couldn't even sit in the car. It was filled to the top with clothes. He begged for a few days. He refused to allow himself to be served paperwork to remove the car and belongings from the garage. Finally my friend had the car towed. With all his clothes in it. It was a violation of his lease. But I told my friend that he allowed the lease to be altered when he let the man move all his crap in. Just wow. His hoarding roommate took over the entire house for $400 a month. I told my friend that he is only paying for one room and he should only have one room. Roommates are the worst.

It’s hard to live with one income under one roof these days. Society isn’t built for that anymore with the rising cost of everything. Sometimes even with two incomes it’s still a struggle. I’m a small time landlord and local Houston infill lot developer. Rising property taxes are making affordable rent impossible. I haven’t raised rent in years but now I have to continue to make things work. Construction material is through the roof so it’s literally impossible to build affordable housing without free money/land or both from the government.

@@joyaustin6581 we've gone a yr or (sometimes 2 yrs) without raising rent at renewal if they were "good" tenants(paid on time, didn't tear up our house, etc). If taxes increase by a minimal amount(of course that's relative across the country), we can suck it up, that's y it's common to rent above the actual mortgage amount. Landlords have to consider things wear out over time or break. Sometimes it's tenants fault, but typically it's wear and tear as homes do eventually age, things have to be replaced. Rents in Vegas have went up 30% in one year. Landlords in Vegas have been questioned as to why they have raised their rent and they said simply because they can. It has nothing to do with raising taxes or insurance rates. Our insurance rates haven’t went up at all and our taxes have went up very little on our properties here in Nevada there’s no excuse for it other than greed.

Greed! Greed! Greed! They can raise rent, leasing fees to the Stratosphere if they want and they the slum lord's know it. They will get a new tenant if old one moves out at any price! $3000 for 1 bedroom apt. in Las Vegas Nevada is now very possible, and probably way more in nicer clean HOA neighborhoods. No tenant laws there to protect any renter, leasee from getting gouged! Lived there from January 1978 to September 2011 and my rent for that same apt. went from $150 a month with all utilities paid to $800 a month with no utilities paid in 2011! Not any greed there yet then. Now, it's a free for all for greedy slumlord's. Good bye and good luck to all paying those back breaking rents there. $9 a gallon gas coming soon in late May.

First of all the eviction moratorium hit many landlords. There were a lot of no boating tenants. Landlords lost money as they still have to pay for mortgage property taxes, maintenance, etc…. Additionally, property taxes have gone up, insurance went up, repair costs including part cost went up. All this is due to eviction moratorium. The eviction moratorium should have been handled better.

No. That's the wrong way to think about all of this. Renters and owners pointing fingers at each other won't solve this crisis. This world is whacked out, way too much craziness everywhere right now. I'm sorry you lost out some money, I know you have bills too and property taxes. I'm a renter who did pay my rent even though I was out of work for a year. I didn't get relief for months, I'm lucky I only lost a few thousand dollars after it was all said and done. The way things are going, I'm very nervous we will see something akin to the French Revolution because the class divide is so severe and the working class has been wiped out under all the inflation on everything. All it will take is the weather to get hot and a few KZfaq videos of starving Americans dying off in tent cities across the country. It's scary how close so many are right now to that point. If things keep going the way that they are what's coming will make the Summer 2020 riots look like a playground altercation during the 4th of July.

When I bought my first house (a total fixer) the monthly mortgage payment was 16% higher than the monthly rent payment. It was a stretch but I decided to take the jump into home ownership. If you keep renting, the longer you rent, the more you're going to lose. Find a way to get out of renting, even if it means reinventing yourself. You're not getting any younger.
