Күн бұрын

LOS ANGELES (AP) With a 19-point lead in the second half, the Los Angeles Clippers were cruising toward clinching the franchise's first Western Conference finals berth.
Not so fast.
The Houston Rockets would not be denied.
Corey Brewer scored 15 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and Houston stunned Los Angeles 119-107 on Thursday night to force a Game 7.
"We kept saying, `We're not going to quit,"' said Dwight Howard, who had 20 points and 21 rebounds. "We kept believing. We never gave up on each other."
James Harden scored 23 points - making all 11 of his free throws - while spending most of the fourth quarter on the bench for the Rockets, who have won two straight after trailing the series 3-1. Josh Smith scored 14 of his 19 points in the fourth.
Trailing 87-68, Houston outscored the Clippers 51-20 over the end of the third and in the fourth to shock the sellout crowd of 19,417 into near silence.
"We took our foot off the gas, stopped defending, a lot of things," said Blake Griffin, who finished with 28 points and missed all five of his shots in the fourth quarter when the Clippers were 4 of 22 from the field.
Game 7 is Sunday in Houston.
"It's about who wants it more," Griffin said.
The Clippers led by 19 points in the third quarter, seemingly assured of finishing off the Rockets in six games after beating the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs in seven games in the first round.
Then Rockets started their big run with nine straight points to cut it to 13 heading into the fourth.
"We were trying to run the clock out and we stopped playing," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said. "We gave this one away."
Houston hit seven 3-pointers in the fourth and stymied the Clippers offensively.
"That group just went out there and they just scrambled, they fought and they played their tails off on defense," Rockets coach Kevin McHale said. "They had a great sense about them that they were going to accomplish something."
The Rockets went on a 23-2 run to take a 111-102 lead with 1:44 left. Dazed fans began clearing out.
Chris Paul had 31 points and 11 assists for the Clippers and J.J. Redick added 15 points.
Once again in the series, the third quarter belonged to the Clippers, who outscored the Rockets 28-17 while building that 19-point lead.
The Rockets' frustration boiled over in the third, when Howard was called for a flagrant-1 foul after knocking Griffin to the court on a drive. Harden later got hit with a technical for shoving Griffin.
Griffin ignited the crowd with a fastbreak layup in which he first completed a 360-degree pirouette, extending the lead to 86-68. The franchise's long-suffering fans stood clapping and cheering as the Clippers got defensive stops that turned into baskets on their own end.
Smith hit consecutive 3-pointers, drawing the Rockets to 102-97. With the suddenly nervous crowd chanting, "Let's go, Clippers!" Houston didn't let up.
"We were just riding our momentum," Smith said.
Neither team led by more than nine points in the first half. The Clippers dominated the first quarter, when Howard picked up two early fouls. Harden revived the Rockets by scoring 17 points in the second, including 11 straight against the Clippers' reserves. Once the starters returned, Griffin and Redick combined to score nine straight and put the Clippers ahead 64-62 at halftime.
TIP-INS
Rockets: They dominated the boards 60-41. ... Harden started the game 0 of 5 from the field.
Clippers: DeAndre Jordan made his first four free throws before missing two. ... Former Clippers Corey Maggette (2000-08) and Eric Gordon (2008-11) were on hand, along with Floyd Mayweather Jr., Billy Crystal and "owner emeritus" Shelly Sterling.
REST TIME
After playing every other day, the teams have two days' rest before Game 7.
"I'm almost 30, so I need two days to get my body right," Howard said. "It's going to be a dogfight."

Mchale was an underrated coach . He left all these guys in the game . He didn’t sub harden back in once , let the guys that brought them back into it stay in the game . Very few coaches would do that
@mygaffer
@mygaffer 3 жыл бұрын
That's why he's not a coach, in this league if your stars aren't happy you won't be head coach for long. Remember Kyrie talking about they could all be coach? That's part of why KD left the Warriors, he didn't like that the Warriors front office to bend over backwards for him, even though they did a lot to accommodate him.

this was literally the night i knew categorically MCHALE should have coached the BOSTON CELTICS period and not doc...idk how/why mchale was never offered the boston job in the first place....but man MCHALES overall GRASP of the game as a player vs doc....and his actual winning pedigree as a player and the coaches that coached him really outshined DOCS bs inflated status. This game will forever punctuate docs career for me....all hes ever done was play politics and piss of his player personal gaslight etc....and run the "im not the bad guy they still gotta play to win" bs narrative hes always been full of shit and a hack from player to coach. By the end of it he has his players/stars so fed up with him they dont even want to play hard/win for him anymore cp3/rondo are 2 examples but just he way hell tinker/shuffle the line up and act like "starters" are on par or as valuable as role players as an attempt to cut down his stars/core just some manipulative bitchmade hackery. This game his constant terribly timed timeouts and platitude filled speeches that play out like an 80s summer camp SHOW DOWN movie....where the down river kids gotta beat the up river kids....and what its going to take to win....is more heart and knowing deep down you deserve it more and want it more is what will take to win...kinda bullshit. Earns him millions and his players know hes undeserving of that job/money/their best effort when its all said and done....its happened to every team/star hes ever coached. Hell the boston fools dont even kick it or talk to each other bc of the fallout he instigated. Boston got blown up he had a falling out with rondo....lob city got blown up in his tenure..and cp3 got tired of playing for him same with blake....Theres playing the game right or running what you got on paper to a T....then theres winning DOCS way bc he thinks his form/insights on the game are better than mj/magics/mchale type players...and he can coach IT.....and by IT i mean bs metrics like leading the league in FTA and FT allowed. I swear hes perfect with this lame adam silver inflated numbers no defense era. Its so weak/sad they have to fabricate fake 5* players to compete with players like derozan/lbj/kd/curry as morant/luka/trae/mitchell rise from the ashes of these inflated players.

hes an epic tactician of blown/wasted timeouts summer camp throwback movie platitude ridden speaches mid timeout as your teams getting jabbed in the face left and right as PROOF of his self awareness .... thus the PROOF of his situational awareness with his moves/adjustments proven in both tapes of blown 3-1 leads. Its contingent with his pedigree as a player contrasted with someone like mchale per example on a pure pedigree/game standpoint. Like once youd imagine him mid time out talking about what needs to be stopped what literally needs to be done on court body to body coverage how to play screens/actions etc....but no....year 1 to this day as a coach "cmon guys, were better than this lets GO...theyre the enemy so theyre worse lets go out there and be good and be better on 3" as guys are looking at each other or rolling their eyes like WTF i got myself into trying my best for a guy like this. How do you respond to those time out calls as he shaves you down to 1 20sec, 1 full by 2 mins expecting to already be in the bonus so he can walk to the line and run some "free time out" by getting his team to the line. With him being the league standard bearer of coaching a playstyle that is an offense that wants to lead the league in FTA...and a defense tha leads the league in FT allowed. Hes onto something with joel and james LMFAO. Cant wait to see teams run pic n roll into embiid into his foul trouble..and how doc manages it. Including crash and burn playoff harden vs playoff rondo per ex. And his desire to coach a FT line "free time out" pace...as he uses His team's personal timeouts to run hallmark card readoffs. I mean yeah pop keeps it simple but its still about ball as basic as...." were getting out hustled get a couple more possessions, respect the ball get better looks and were back in the game...much like kerr in a time out when theyre trying to get back in a game.

This game ultimately ended up being the beginning of the end for Lob City Clippers. They never recovered from this series and got knocked out of the first round twice on a row the following years which led to CP3 leaving and Blake getting traded eventually

Had a parlay leg down for over 220.5 on this game. I was watching play by play on my phone and couldn’t fucking believe they got the three. Seeing the dotted lines from the three I thought that was a death sentence. Best hit ever.😂

I had to watch this video after the Sixers' choke last year. Doc Rivers is the NBA's version of Eddie Mush from A Bronx Tale where just it looks like things are going well for his team, you know the bad karma he has eventually comes back to haunt his team.
