Quantum dots can be seen as one milestone for the whole field of nanotechnology. Because they added a new dimension to the periodic table. The story of the discovery and synthesis of Magical Quantum Dots is very interesting. And it revolutionised nanoscience. Hence, The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023 was awarded to Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexey I. Yekimov "for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots."
In this video, we dive deep into concepts of Quantum Mechanics like Particle in a box. Then we learn how electrons and their energy levels influence optical properties such as color in Materials. We will specifically learn about the energy bands of Semiconductors. And what happens to the energy gap once size-dependent quantum effects are introduced? Building on these concepts we’ll narrate the amazing story of scientists and their work on Quantum dots that won them the 2023 Chemistry Nobel Prize.
We have covered a lot of ground in this 45-minute video. You might find some repetitiveness. But that’s introduced keeping in mind the absolute layperson, who has never been exposed to these ideas and concepts. It took a lot of time, energy and effort to create this. But we had fun.
