How 3 Speed Transmissions work in RC Cars & Next project!

Before this thing becomes a shelf queen, I wanted to give a last chance on the 3 speed transmission to work. Originally this chassis came with a screaming 38,000rpm 2 stroke engine which was capable enough to make the centrifugal clutch of 2nd and 3rd gear to engage. The second gear would engage at 5,000rpm and 3rd at 7,000rpm+. The v4 engine though can't do that, as it can rev maximum to 10,000rpm and with the gear reduction it's even lower. That means that it's impossible to activate the clutch at those rpm. Since it's not an adjustable clutch to precisely adjust the shifting point of each gear, the only thing I could do, was to soften the springs of 2nd and 3rd gear of the clutch to engage them at lower rpm. Unfortunately that didn't happen, and I could't soften them anymore, because the clutch shoes could fall out and lose them. I really didn't want to postpone this video any longer as it was supposed to take no more than 1-2 days. I kind of feel shame for posting it, but at least I hope some people will appreciate it. As for the next project, I know many of you won't like it, but if by now you haven't noticed, I weird XD. Seriously though, this chassis, the Schumacher Menace GTR had one electric version from factory with the 3 speed transmission, exactly in the way I'm going to make it. Only different thing will be the size of the brushless motor, which will be huge. As I said in the video, I'm not giving up on combustion engines. As a matter of fact, by the end of this month there's a video coming with a very unique single cylinder 4 stroke engine.
Thank you for your support and nice comments.

That is also a very good suggestion. I also suspect that the spring tension is still too great. Tip; With a grub screw at the point where the spring rests, you can set the shitfing point by turning the grub screw in or out

I imagine that nobody will hate him for it, but I also imagine that a lot of people won't be watching nearly as closely. Electric motors in RC cars are pretty common, you can go to any toy or hobby store and have one off the shelf for pretty cheap. These combustion motors, however, are a bit more exotic and take a lot more time and money to get working, something not a lot of people are willing to do, which I suspect is why this series really took off.

@@AiOinc1 - The advantage of electric is the torque, that has a lot to do with the petrol engine struggling to gain revs at lower rpm's. The electric would have ALL the torque all the way through the rev band.

Unless I'm misunderstanding this, you're selecting a gear from the engine RPM, not the final drive RPM. With all due respect, that is the opposite of what you want. You need to be able to run the engine at near maximum RPM for power in each gear for best performance. Your governor or gear select mechanism needs to be based on ground speed. It may be easier, although I don't know if there's enough space to control that with a servo and a simple encoder feedback to select what gear is active. To make this work well, it gets complicated quickly as you'd also need to know throttle input, and motor speed, along with ground speed. This would be an easy job for an arduino and a couple of sensors. You may be more of a mechanical guy than a coder/electrical guy though, and that's ok.
@tbdcreations5370
@tbdcreations5370 3 жыл бұрын
kleetus92 I don’t believe those gears are engaged by engine speed. It’s hard to say for sure from the video but it looks like that mechanism is likely placed on the output shaft of his transmission, thus operating based on ground speed as you said. I once had a nitro rc car and its transmission was similar to your standard constant mesh gearbox except it had one of these mechanisms on the output shaft, with first gear being driven by a one-way bearing. Once first gear drove the car fast enough the mechanism would engage and grab the next gear.

You just need to use a weaker spring for the centrifugal clutch to work. I used to do this when OS first came out with their 4 cycle .26 engines in the early 2000's. They couldn't rev high enough to engage second gear so I found a softer spring to make the centrifugal clutch work.

Let me explain about the gear. You need thinner but longer spring for the 2nd gear and relatively stronger for the 3rd gear. You measured the RPM of the gears and no load. In loads it never go 4,000 RPM. You need to adjust the 2nd gear spring to engage at 800 RPM and for the 3rd gear 1,200 RPM. But as I told thinner but a little bit longer spring.

I had an issue with a two speed system about 15 years ago... Instead of trying to count on the weighted throws to keep the clutches engaged... I shaped the contact points sharp, like a clock work escapement points.... so they lock in, once they do catch... and stay locked in while under torque/power/throttle....... please note, although this helped a whole lot... they didn't last as long, as the sharp edges dull out pretty quick... but the pulsing, of trying to to stay engaged, then being bogged down, even though, only for a second, was enough to disengage them.. .hence, shaping the contact points to snag and lock into one another ,while under power .. good luck

Shortening a spring dose not change the spring rate, it’s still the same spring, you need thinner wire, you have a lathe, make your own springs, just buy the right diameter and turn around a mandrill. But I’m sure you already know this as you an intelligent individual, very enjoyable to watch you progress with these projects.

Another great video Johnny, one question though. It seems the fuelling is totally out when its on the road compared to on the stand. Probably because under load it requires more fuel. This could be why it seems to struggle to get to high rpm's. If the enine revs to 11,500, surely you should be changing from 1st to 2nd at 4000rpm and 3rd at 6750-7500rpm? But it don't appear on the street to be hitting anywhere near those revs. Thoughts?
