The orange color is also inconsistent. There are just blobs of orange where he applied WAY too much dye all at once. Even "Insider" noticed how crappy it looks because they went as far as enhancing the color in the thumbnail to make it look better and more consistent lmao. It doesn't look that good in the vid unfortunately 😂

As someone who does professional custom finishing, refinishing, restorations, etc (furniture, cabinets, wood) this was a textbook restoration but the execution throughout was just average at best. The dying at the end seemed especially rushed, resulting in the shade inconsistencies. Still a solid how to guide.

Very satisfying video to watch and most of it relaxing to watch. Perhaps if the color was requested to be changed, investing the time to fully mask the shoe and use an airbrush for the dye would have been better. Certain leather dyes (especially suede dyes) do not distribute evenly unless the applicator itself provides an even spread (which is extremely difficult with a paintbrush) and the leather type accepts dye and/or diffuses it evenly (which suede usually does not). Anyhoo, my two cents as a leather artist. :)

@@suzynobles34 these are designer shoes. They don't have cheap black rubber soles obviously. Instead it should be light coloured leather. Putting this black rubber on it is just like restoring a painting and instead of carefully recreating the original masterpiece and keeping as much of it as possible just spray it with turpentine and remove the old paint and after that simply use a paint roller to add one random colour of new paint on the now destroyed canvas. Anyone who knows anything about shoes or about restoration wouldn't ever even consider doing something insane like adding budget black rubber on a designer shoe. It's ridiculous this video is online to praise craftsmanship while this guy is clearly a disaster who knows nothing at all about restoring shoes....
@redmanish
@redmanish 3 жыл бұрын
@@kayz-art Unlike paintings, shoes are made to be worn. Perhaps the person who owns them wanted a greater degree of waterproofing or didn’t want to have to re-sole the shoe constantly. Once they purchase a product, it is theirs to do with as they wish.
@kayz-art
@kayz-art 3 жыл бұрын
@@redmanish rubber soles wear waaaay faster than new leather soles. Plus rubber soles and especially black rubber soles look incredibly ugly on a shoe like this. Not to mention the horrible paint job. As mentioned somewhere else it is up to the owner, but I doubt anyone wanted this. Regardless, it has absolutely nothing to do with restoring the shoes like is claimed in this video! It's destroying them, making them worthless instead of the 750 dollar mentioned (which they would certainly have been worth when restored properly!). And I'd say any shoe maker who knows his stuff and takes some pride in his work would simply refuse if a customer would ask to put black rubber soles on designer shoes like these and even if they would do it they would do it secretively instead of sharing it on KZfaq because they would be utterly ashamed of it...

I don’t like the the color Choice, but those are not splotches. They are the fibers laying in different directions. Suede and leather has a “nap“ which leaves fingerprints and marks when fibers are touched and oriented differently. Kind of like rubbing a silky sofa or blanket, and how the fibers turn different directions and you can draw patterns or write your name if you brush them one way or the other…… And then brush it all back the same direction to erase it and start over. I’m pretty positive 95% of those marks and splotches are fibers oriented differently. Which is magnified by the Bright studio filming lights. I’ve done a lot of leather work. Designing and making my own patterns, doing small repairs, and even complete large scale restorations. Spent years collecting and making my own leather tooling based from and think cobblers and leather workers equipment. Then finding and meticulously restoring three vintage leather sewing machines. It’s a small part of my workshop, but I very much enjoy leather work. I am NOT a professional. I am simply a full-time self-employed woodworker, who has learned leather simply because I enjoy it.... and because sometimes it is necessary in my work. I love restoring rare violin cases made from fine alligator and other leather materials. From the mid-1800s onward. I don’t work with suede often. I find it more difficult than even the most fragile alligator, or lizard/other reptile. However, suede and even coarse grained leathers can easily have that splotchy look. Even when new. They should have brushed the fibers all the same direction for the final film reveal.

I wish they would say how much the work costs. I’m curious if it is something that is actually cost-effective? Or if people only do it because they are sentimental about the item.
