Wikipedia: The ArmaLite AR-18 is a gas-operated assault rifle chambered for 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition. The AR-18 was designed at ArmaLite in California by Arthur Miller, Eugene Stoner, George Sullivan, and Charles Dorchester in 1963 as an alternative to the Colt AR-15 design, a variant of which had just been selected by the U.S. military as the M16. A semi-automatic version known as the AR-180 was later produced for the civilian market. While the AR-18 was never adopted as the standard service rifle of any nation, its production license was sold to companies in Japan and the United Kingdom, and it is said to have influenced many later weapons such as the British SA80,[1][2][3] the Singaporean SAR-80 and SR-88,[4] the American Adaptive Combat Rifle, the Belgian FN F2000,[5] the Japanese Howa Type 89[6] and the German Heckler and Koch G36.

Does the bolt sit on top of the recoil springs? How much contact does the bolt carrier and guide rods have?

I don't yet see what prevents out-of-battery discharge... maybe the hammer will not engage the firing pin with enough energy when the carrier is backed off a bit?

I don't see a why it would discharge out battery. On semi the hammer gets held back by the disconnector while you are hold the trigger and nobody could be fast enough to let off the trigger and pull it again before the gun is in battery. On full auto the hammer doesn't get released by the auto sear until the bolt slams forward into battery. Only other possibility is a weak firing pin spring that allows the firing pin to poke out when the bolt slams shut but that's very rare and is technically possible on any firearm that doesn't have a firing pin block safety feature which a lot of guns don't.

@@americangangster1911 Right, I was just thinking about when the bolt doesn't fully close (eg a weird mag has too much drag on the carrier, happened to me last week but I noticed it and gave it a tap B4 pulling the trigger) and the trigger is pulled. The rear of the firing pin is still hit by the hammer.

I don't know why M16 went for a gas pipe over gas rod

@unkulwilly only gun with a bolt assist because of crusting on the bolt from all the crud coming back to the bolt and sustained fire heat the bolt so much it could set a primer off

@@charliecharliecharliecharl8554the forward assist is useless. It was only put on because the army felt like they needed something to hit. Not because the gun "crusts up" Also, pretty much all full autos can have cook offs due to heat. This isn't something unique to the M16 design.

@wesleyroberts7119The forward assist, or bolt-closure device, is a way to manually close an AR's bolt. Eugene Stoner did not originally design the M16 with an external forward assist. The U.S. Army demanded an external forward assist on the rifle. If the bolt won't close under its own power, the rifle's telling you there's a problem ,The forward assist was introduced for the U.S. Army ij the XM16E1 model. The Army believed their Soldiers needed a way to propey seat the cartridge incase it didn't seat right

would it be possible to use a gas tube instead of an operating rod?
@anatineduo4289
@anatineduo4289 Жыл бұрын
I think so, and then on the front of the bolt carrier, drill a hole for the tube to fit into.

@@charliecharliecharliecharl8554 There is the idea that blowing gas into the action can help remove mud... I'm not sure I buy that as useful, but it is interesting. Also it might be a softer opening of the action, but that could also be accomplished by reducing gas flow to the piston or other engineering. Perhaps it's just an interesting question, or maybe it's the pervasive thought that direct impingement is better. 😀

I thought every shot the hot gases heat the bolt even more ,a red hot bolt possibly set a primer off setting off the bullet plus all the crust on the edge of the bolt of those old M16 s without the bolt assist, HK 16 piston , Even ak47 has a piston

@@charliecharliecharliecharl8554 You are right, internal pistons like AR15 are much hotter and have much more powder residue in the action... the more I look at it the more I like the Kel Tec long stroke piston
