Wow i just came across this video through reddit and it was really worth a watch From the breakdown of the characters, the description of subversions, the fanservice, the stakes, the audio, the looks... Good stuff! When the series will go on for a bit more I hope you'll talk about the writing in spoiler territory. I'm so happy to have such a show this season that doesn't fall into the trap of giving the leads cliché wish fulfilling personalities and give the female lead all of the "male gaze" screentime and having the plot as just the background to the fanservice, and make the leads get together by plot power. Here, both characters are *actual characters*, with solid goals, personalities, insecurities and passions. They don't get together by the power of "the author wants to" but because of their chemistry and their shared goal. Yes there is PLENTY of fanservice but it's not the substance of it all. The plot is very strong, enough to stand on its own, and like you mentionned all the fanservice are in Marin's control. Gojo even tries to avoid those moments, but still has that realistic that hey, he's a teen, he's got a female friend he's clearly attracted to, ofc he's going to be flustered, add on top his self isolation from people and self-esteem issues you have a ball of nerves, both great for comedy and wholesome moments. There are many anime series that have managed to ascend to the top. All of them succeeded because they show the reality through a different point of view. Some were about the cruelty in this world like Naruto and Aot. However cruelty isn't the only thing that exist in this world. While demon slayer and attack on titan showed the unjust part of life, My dress-up darling showes the good part of life. It is about happiness. While Eren and Tanjiro feel alige because they fight for something, Kitagawa and Gojo feel happy and proud of being alive. (The seven deadly sins is something between these two types)

The only thing is that you have the definition of otaku wrong. Otaku is a person who is obsessed with something so much that it is a detriment to their social skills. Which means Gojo is an otaku.

Great video! As someone is a fan of My Dress-up Darling, it is a good show (it has flaws but overall it's great). Is it for everyone? Not really; Is it as popular as AOT and Demon Slayer?yes but not really (again), I think both AOT and Demon Slayer are the two top popular and good anime of the season but I believe that My Dress-up Darling is definitely the best and most popular stand-alone anime this season.

I feel lucky to not have a strong Anime background. In fact, my watched anime is full of your generic DBZ items with a handful of other series thrown in. I feel that this was beneficial when watching MDD because I'm not trying to constantly compare the show to other things I've watched while I'm trying to enjoy the show. I can very easily look past fan-service in a show, and while this definitely had those moments, I agree that nearly all of those moments were in service to the show, due to the actual situations they were in. I mean, a guy who has no friends needing to take measurements of a pretty girl at his place and they're all alone while she's in a bikini... I'd say that if Gojo didn't react the way he did, he wouldn't care about Marin in any romantic sense. This I think also helps Marin realize that Gojo isn't like other boys. Where Marin will constantly be hit on because she's pretty (which we see her outright shoot down those guys), Gojo acknowledges she is pretty, but doesn't let that be the driving force. He's craving a friend, and the fact that someone is willing to be that, is amazing. The fact that he wants to be unbelievably respectful to her and not make things awkward is another reason I think Marin really starts caring for Gojo. One of the most refreshing things is how natural the relationship is. The love actually almost exclusively comes from Marin, but she doesn't let it slip, and she also doesn't become a love-struck moron. She still treats Gojo as a friend, but she's willing to tear down protective walls, and allow her inner self to come through. This also happens with Gojo, as he becomes far more confident in what he can do, and there is less and less tension whenever there is a fitting, or measurements, etc. Toward the end (spoilers? i guess?), it comes to fruition between the two. They both know they love one another, and most importantly, not for superficial reasons. The friendship between them is absolutely wholesome and is what is bringing them closer together - not their physical attraction. Sure, they can definitely look at one another and say "he's cute, she's cute", but not once did I see that as the driving force for their love. It seems natural, non-forced, and genuine. Funny enough, Gojo starts out looking for a friend, and by the end has one he truly cherishes. Marin wanted assistance by someone whom she admired, and ended up realizing he was far more than just his talents. At no point did the story become a jealousy fight, falling out, etc. We didn't have 5 episodes of depression while they fight to regain another's trust or any of that crap. It was about as realistic a pairing as you could get. Not one episode left me with anything other than a smile on my face and a warmth in my heart. People can surface level look at the fan-service, but I got over that within seconds, and really felt something. I'm not afraid to admit that when Marin finally tells Gojo that she loves him, I broke down in happy tears. We really take a lot of stuff for granted in life, and just seeing two people (even if they're animated) be genuinely kind, nice, and sweet to one another... That truly is something special. 11/10

I’ve been meaning to watch this show, but haven’t yet. My first impression of it is that this show is wish fulfillment, but not in the way we typically describe that in the anime community. Most people in their mid 20s (target audience) are trying to find something they can succeed at and want to be around people that would support them and believe in them. This show’s premise addresses the fears of its target audience. On top of having a quality waifu (maybe I’m biased because I’m a sucker for gyarus), that wish fulfillment aspect is a big draw for people. Oh, and your mention of Tamaki- yeah, I actually disagree with everyone about that character and I think it’s a subversion of fan service. It’s so over the top it has to be a parody, which is backed up by the story later on. For this reason, I really like Tamaki’s character and I think everyone has it wrong. I almost made a video about it lol, maybe I still should. Overall, Fire Force has progressive lessons woven throughout it, and that’s not the only time the show addresses gender inequality.

The reason why My dress up darling is ranked higher than AOT and DS is because people like waifu more than Good story and animation.

I still felt this show was too "pandering" with how these two MCs are, even though you addressed both of the subversions. I probably would have loved it when I was younger, but now I can't hold that suspension my disbelief
