How a Manual Transmission Works
A demonstration of the basic principle behind a constant-mesh manual transmission. The animation is loosely based on Toyota's 5-speed R150, and the 3D model it is created from is available on Thingiverse at www.thingiverse.com/thing:377...
I hope that the video is helpful and instructive for some.
(Synchronizers are not covered here - for the sake of brevity and clarity)

Thank you. Yes - I botched the volume balance in more than one place. I have learned from that and will do the audio mix with more care next time. Frankly, I hurried the release. It had been months in the making - a daily grind of tweaks and retweaks ... when I finally glimpsed the light at the end of the tunnel, I ran to it. :) In post mortem I provided a customized Closed Caption track ... too little, too late. Very nice work and getting things to print with the right tolerances on a CR-10 is a challenge in itself. I fought that on a few stationary steam engines to run on air. First transmission I took apart was on a 1950 Plymouth to replace a broken synchronizer gear, at age 17, now 71.

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I was two when you took that first transmission apart. You didn't mention that it was ever put back together ;) My CR-10 and I have reached various agreements over time (I don't push; it doesn't shove). It's been extraordinarily good to me for the past year - a real workhorse, but yes - tight tolerances were the largest challenge here. And that shifter cradle...I'm still waking up in the middle of the night...

@@gvet47 I have found the hot-end silicone sock to be a worthy, inexpensive, and painless modification. Highly recommend them now for just that eventuality. This was done completely from scratch with plenty of missteps along the way. I actually began modeling a much simpler, older transmission (viewed in a 1936 Chevrolet training film titled "Spinning Levers" - look it up - a beautiful little production) - but decided, after weeks of work, to scrap that and, instead model this much more complex and (to me) interesting one. I had a lot of prior experience with video production - but almost none with the animation of a 3D model - so that took a bit of effort. One could motorize it, to be sure. I was tempted to do that with an earlier model that I made of an open differential (www.thingiverse.com/thing:3592644) but decided in both cases that it would hurt more than it would help when using the model(s) as hands-on instructional tools. And just so I can sleep in peace again: My arithmetic was bad. I was 5 when you tore down that gear box. :)

Thank you. Yes, Fusion360 produced the basic animations of the model. The video actually incorporates 6 separate animations which were blended together (in various ways) using PowerDirector 365 - the program that also provided the graphics (titles, labels, arrows, etc...) and the soundtrack. If curious, here is a screenshot of the video's structure as seen from the POV of PowerDirector. You will see 12 layered tracks of video, 1 audio track, 1 fx track, and that top unnumbered track which is the Closed Captioning (kinda). Not visible in that screencap is the voiceover track as it doesn't fit on screen there. imgur.com/a/jqqPf5I

@Twittler1 3 жыл бұрын
The ratios vary from model to model of gearboxes from different manufacturers, and they also vary within models from the same gearbox manufacturer depending on what the car manufacturer wants. There isn’t a standard set, although some ratios are very common. Very few car makers make their own gearboxes - they buy them from suppliers.

Included in the posting of the model is a document named "Assembly.pdf" which is an illustrated, detailed, step-by-step guide to the model's assembly. @@johnsanborn2950 Mine has no synchros either. Well theoretically the pieces of plastic are there, but they get negligible friction to the gears, so they do nothing. @johnsanborn2950
@johnsanborn2950 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The output of the engine is coupled to the input of the transmission by a clutch. When braking to a stop, the engine is disengaged from the transmission using this clutch. Although not discussed in the video (as it is not part of the transmission proper) the clutch is represented by the circular plate attached to the end of the transmission's input shaft.

I used "Helical Gear Generator" by Ross Korsky (available in Autodesk's App Store). I did not control individual gear diameters. I controlled each gear set's "Center Distance" (the sum of their two radii) - keeping this a constant. This is done by calculating an appropriate module for each of the four gear sets.

Why are most of the gear teeth on a slant? It’s to reduce the noise from them engaging. Notice the teeth for the reverse-gear chain are not on a slant. So you always get that transmission whine when you’re backing up. Safety feature?

@@lawrencedoliveiro9104 I always thought that reverse was a direct drive from the engine, with the highest torque of any gear. I’m not sure though so don’t quote me! 😅

Hey quick question could you make it without using the bearing balls and the spring? If not is there any alternative?

It would still function w/o that hardware. You would only lose the detents that provide positive stops for the selector sleeves' key positions.

Great Video! very best I've seen on transmissions. I found the music a bit loud, I have hearing issues, and having your voice around the same volume as the background music makes it difficult to follow your voice. I am guessing it took a bazillion hours to produce this video? I'm not sure how I'd do it through Fusion.

Thank you for the kind words. I hope that those who might benefit from it can find it. I struggled mightily to find a balance with the music. Start-to-finish: the research, model, video, and illustrated assembly.instructions took a little over 1,000 hours. I feel like I have a newborn. :)

So what is happening when you grind the gears? I started driving manual only a couple years ago and I still will accidentally grind them shifting down into 1st once every few months.

This involves a mechanism called a Synchronizer (not covered in the video). There are a handful of decent KZfaq videos out there on the subject. Here is one that I favor... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pLNkdtiI0dSuiWQ.html

Only select first when you’ve stopped. As long as the car’s moving, go no lower than 2nd, and feather the clutch a little if you need to, but only for an instant.

I used Fusion 360 to design the model and to create the animations (8 in total) that I then combined together using PowerDirector .

Thank you for that question. I'm not sure how viable such a project might be. It would require several hundred hours to produce, and would have a relatively small target audience - those using both Fusion 360 and PowerDirector. But you have me pondering it....
