How a Mastermind and his Dark Horse Roster Conquered Counter-Strike

North America has always played second fiddle to Europe in Counter-Strike.
No matter how good an NA team got, it always seemed like there was a ceiling.
A couple of teams proved they could hang with the world’s best. But they could never be the best. Those glimpses of greatness were, for years, just that.
But then came Team Liquid. A cast of characters moulded over years of trial and error, helmed by a man who’s been there since the beginning. There is absolutely no question that NA has finally produced the best Counter-Strike team in the world.
It just took them years to put the puzzle together.

I feel like Stewie was the piece they needed. He brings a winning mentality to the team. Before Stewie joined the team, whenever they were interviewed, they always say thing like "We will try our best" "Hope to put up a good performance". After Stewie joined, all of that changed to "We are here to play and we are going to win, no matter who we face. It doesn't matter if they are the best team in the world, the best player in the world, we are going to win".

I told a lot of people some years back that nitr0 was one of the best players in NA and to keep an eye on him. I always knew he was the best player on the Elevate roster and even when he left to Liquid, I had a feeling he would bloom into something bigger. People would say Elige was the best player on that roster at that time, but nitr0 just kept standing out to me as a very competent player. The way he maneuvered and positioned himself, there was just something special about it; you can tell that his brain for the game and his ability to make quick, on the fly decisions has turned him into a genius of the game.

Many years ago, I decided to check out my first bit of pro CS on a whim. I played MM with friends but had never had any interest in esports at the time. Of the dozen or so teams I saw in that first day, TSM and Liquid stood out to me, and those teams stayed my favourites for years. I supported them despite not knowing much about them and despite the fact they didn't win that often. Now here we are, years late - TSM went on to become Astralis and Liquid is currently dominating the world. I couldn't be happier with my blind choice of teams.

Let's GO team NA for this upcoming Major

Of course they will confortable, they always win Just wait until they starting losing = then u can see the 'real' relation behind them Remember cloud9? They talking like a family back then, even when they won the major = they look very happy and supporting each other Then what happen? The team broke after they lost a lot of games Tarik and Stew left the team U cant really test someone relationship in good condition U must test it on bad condition If after they lose a lot of games, they still support each other and not kicking anyone = yes,it's real family

To be fair, I think Stewie2K completely reshaped the CSGO pro scene. He had the balls to take NA overagressive style on the main stage and he did it to near perfection and I think it blew a new wind into all of those talented people. Because, in all honesty, most NA teams tried to replicate EU's more strategic and slow approach to the game. He changed that. Ever since he signed with Cloud9, NA's got a massive load of great moments, underdog or not. I'm a G2 fan, especially since I'm a french guy but god damn it feels so good to see NA on the map like that ! All those guys with insane individual talent coming together. Anyway, I love G2, I loved the amazing Astralis reign but huge props to Team Liquid for their amazing year ! (let's not forget LoL's MSI finals as well!)

Why do you credit nitro with ‘building the team’? Yea he was there but you never said he had a direct hand in picking those players.

Eras are defined by major wins. Minor tournaments, no matter how big they are, bring the only context to greater stories. One thing we should take notice of is that the Intel Grand Slam's difficulty seems overhyped, probably because of the big bucks it comes with. If "the most challenging achievement of the competitive scene" is completed twice during the same year by two different teams, it either means we are at a weird moment of CS:GO history in which teams are super-dominant for a short period then fade behind the next dominant team, or that this whole "Grand Slam" idea is not nearly as hard as it is marketed to be. It does not mean it is easy nor useless -it definitely adds more spice to minor tournaments-, it just means that we might have to wait for the result of this major to start to seriously call TL the "best team in the world". They are the strongest contenders for the title and it is theirs to snatch it with a major win. Because if Astralis wins it -arguably against the odds- who will question their status as the first team to win 3 majors in a row?

I think Liquid are the most consistant team in the world but I'm not sure if the best. And since we haven't seen a lot of Astralis lately, they haven't played a lot, so I still think Astralis might've been preparing a surprise for the major. I'll wait until the end of the major to pick my "best team in the world"
