This is a *very* good explainer, because you show not only the assembly but also what effect each component practically has. Imo the *best* "how a watch works" video out there. A followup with self-winding and chrono modules would ofc be great; though I appreciate that those might be more difficult to demonstrate. Random thought... It would be nice to have a movement like this (whether by ETA or a custom modification) where the back plates were transparent (e.g. milled sapphire); as is they cover up so much of the watch mechanisms...

Assembly aside, how on earth were such tiny mechanisms manufactured in the past? It's a work of art. I imagine watchmen also had a mini lathe or something.

I wear a vintage Imperial "25 Jewel" watch that has a 17 jewel movement, manual, I always just knew they had gears in them but never knew how they worked in order, this video taught me a lot about my watch and how the layers and different parts qork together to make a watch work.

Possibly the best video on watch mechanicals out there. Can hardly understand why some charlatan watchmakers make such a big deal of their profession. Fortunately, I have experienced some 'old school' watchmakers who love what they do and their results are amazing.

Another incredible view into human engineering. The mechanical watch. Humans developed a way to measure time on earth and then constructed a device like this completely void of electricity to monitor time with absolute precision. Simply amazing.

Excellent video showing the precision machining required to keep the delicate interconnected parts in perfect sync and harmony . A horological work of art that amazes with its reliability and beauty. RDR , myself and other viewers would like to hear you rank watch brands from best to worst in terms of actual quality . The snobbery that is an unfortunate part of the luxury watch world makes an impartial appraisal difficult for investment and enjoyment.

When I was a teenager, my Dad’s best friend had a watch repair shop. In the summer of 1980 I started working there as an assistance. Learned how to clean and polish the watches. He gave me an older Hamilton watch to work on and was my project to repair it and make run. It was challenging at first. Finally got the watch running and with a new brown leather wrist band it was beautiful piece of machinery. Had it for years and unfortunately our house got broken in couple years ago and the watch was stolen 🥺 My Dad’s friend has passed away since then and till this day, I still fix my own watches including the wifey’s. I would of continue this career path. Back then I was into sports and weight training and my hands were to rough for this line of work. Almost need a surgeons hands to handle those intricate pieces of gears. Great video by the way and brought so many memories 😁

For some reason, with all of the repair and movement explanation videos I've watched, it never dawned on me that you wouldn't be able to wind the main spring without the escapement in place (which makes perfect sense, of course). Thank you for this.

What movement is that? It looks familiar as I think it's the one Mark uses it in his training videos, but I have never seen a movement with black mainplates and bridges like that. Is it a movement built for teaching watchmakers in school?
