I feel for this town. When I was 8 years old we lived in Hansford Court, a new subdivision in Gisborne NZ. The new subdivision was built behind the DB Hotel which was a regular drinking spot for alot of mongrel mob gang members. So the pub carpark, which seemed so huge at the time, was about 20 metres up the road from our house. One afternoon, me and my best friend were heading down toward the carpark which we used to cut through to get to the local dairy. We were halfway through the carpark when three Bedford trucks pulled up and black power gang members began jumping out from the back with baseball bats, macheties, knives, and I even saw one with a gun. Now that viseral feeling overwhelmed me and my friend, as we both had grown up seeing violence nearly on a daily basis so we knew shit was about to go down. We were about 20 feet away from the trucks when one of the guys who'd just jumped out, turned to us and said 'go home now!' and we began backing up and then sprinted toward home, but when we got 20 metres away, we ducked down behind a mound on our tummys and watched what unfolded. It was all on. Mongrel mob members were filing out of the pub doors, and began attacking the black power members. Now, I told you that we were pretty immune to violence in those days but nothing prepared me for what was unfolding before our very eyes. I saw one guy come in with a machete and nearly cut a man's arm off, another who was already on the ground and being stabbed repeatedly, someone else lay on the ground with a dent in his head and blood everywhere and the sprays of blood was what got to me the most even to this day. The locals were trying to defuse the violence but there was no stopping it. People who have lived in these kind of communities know violence as a way of life, but there's always this inner basic viseral feeling when you witness extreme violence on this scale. All the niceties of society are stripped away, leaving you with the most urgent of messages screaming in your head to run for your life. After the police arrived, there was a standoff but the damage had been done. We sprinted back to my place and my friend vomited on the back lawn and we were both shaking. When mum came back from work, we told her about what we saw and she said to never let anyone else know that we saw anything. So we did. We were just kids but the PTS that came afterward was sometimes too much to bear considering we still had our neighbours fighting, across the road one of our neighbours had no problem dragging his wife out the front door and locking her out all battered and bruised for everyone to see. My mum (who was a single mum with no help from our father) knew what that felt like and allowed the neighbor to come to our place and sit with her till the husband calmed down and would come to get her. So now as a grandmother, I still have anxiety due to what I witnessed. I can only hope that this situation in my homeland Aotearoa, New Zealand, will not escalate and continue. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in this town. Kia Kaha Kaikohe.

The more gangs, violence and crimes are accepted as normal, the worse it gets. Don't get fooled by the "they don't mess with us, just bash at each other, so it's fine", it won't last. Trust me, I know some countries and regions that are some of the most violent on the planet, but it only got like that after the population gradually accepted increasing crime and too much leniency towards criminals. Criminals aren't victims, they either get punished harshly and get back in civilized society as a civilized human or they should get back in jail or just asked to leave the country.

Sadly we hear and see this behavior more and more across the country. There are no consequences in NZ. The justice system needs to be looked at to make people think twice about what they are doing. But the behaviour from these thugs shouldnt be tolerated and deserve a lot more than a slap on the hand.

These gang members like the rest of the NZ population need decent job opportunities and wages that go with it. When people have nothing to do, when life is very expensive and near impossible to exist on crap wages, people turn to illegal activities to survive. The government should be investing in industry, manufacturing etc to create employment opportunities. Get the country working hard, this is how you eliminate many social problems. It's not just NZ either, Australia is becoming the same. Our governments and corporate giants have destroyed so many opportunities for wealth creation through moving our own manufacturing of goods and services - all gone to China for a quick buck. Now we are all suffering.

New Zealand is a place where criminals and criminal activity are encouraged, they thrive there. Consequences already exist for those that commit crime. It is the Police that are responsible for enforcing them. Aside from that, Parents are responsible for the raising of their offspring. That is where the work must be done. Everyone knows that prevention is better than cure. I was born and bred in kaikohe. Still love the place. It’s changing a lot now, more families moving home. It did go down hill it’s on its way back up now slowly. I hope it restores its former glory, the place was once very lovely. My mother tutored at mahi Kia mohio trust, where Maori youth were very active as were gang members. It was all about reinstating Maori tikanga, teaching those that wanted to learn. And a lot more other skills including Kapa haka. And it wasn’t just for Maori it was for all.

That's cool that the community of kaikohe are trying there utmost best to create a safer environment but it's so deeper than what use understand. The difference is that the gangs give the youth of Aotearoa support and actually put Kai in there pukus, not only that the gangs get the youths off the streets and give them a life better than the current situations there living and therefore the youth don't see them as menaces and tend to see them more of a hero and idolize these men. My opinion would be to the council of that community would be is to get the youth off the streets and if that means having a person drive around and pick them up do that everyday regardless. (2) be committed and ask the youth about what they want in life and as there supporters be there for them through the good the bad and the ugly. (3) Feed these young ones even if they say there OK because most times there not but to whakama to say. (4) Don't overload them with education that's when they lose interest so a couple hours a day would suffice but also give them an incentive to motivate them. (5) Sports outdoor activities and even camping trips noho maraes ect ect. (6) Don't give up on them no matter what and always encourage them and give the motivational speeches cause over time they will grow to respect and trust u as an idol and know they will no what your saying is out of love and that they will understand u only want what's best for them. If they screw up support them show compassion be there when they need u the most because this is where it goes wrong when the people whom these youths thought was there for them weren't there and hence why the young think it was all bullshit trust me I know. So yeah most of youth either come from broken homes or have whanau in gangs so show them how to break that cycle and use give them hope cause that's what gangs do show them love feed them see the youth as equals not there superiors and support them. The thing is gang members want what's best for the young it's just that when gangsters show more love then whanau hapu and iwi of course these young want to grow up to have that patch on there backs why cause all the youth see are genuinely good people who the young think love them more then there own parents. The initiatives the council person mentioned are fluffy and wont do anything. Shane Jones understands the issues and real solutions however needs wide spread support to may a real difference. It takes a wide variety of strategies including heavy enforcement, but we must understand the reason why kids with very little gravitate to gangs...."perceived" brotherhood and bling. NZ is a beautiful place with great first world opportunities, but they are bored and they live in a small town in NZ. A lot (not all) of the indigenous people in NZ are quite excitable and like the adrenaline rush of a confrontation, I played rugby with loads of Māori and PI and I see it in the way they conduct themselves on and off the field. They respect strength most of all. Some Europeans are like this but it’s not as common. It’s not that they are bad people but If they don’t have anywhere to channel this energy it manifests itself in the form of fights and laddish behaviour in general. They are being asked to be quiet and boring and it’s goes against their natural instincts. As long as they are just bashing each other just let them get on with it.
