I'm kickstarting something new for the channel - I am revisitng some of the most important, iconic, and overall entertaining sets that's happened over the course of Smash Ultimate's history. Today, I'm analyzing and talking about Acola's first ever American tournament, where he would end up winning over Light at The Gimvitational, and how this was the beginning of his reign to become #1 with a character we still weren't sure was good or not.

Got second at his first offline event (Maesuma Offline invitational) Won his first offline open-entry tournament (Sumabato SP24) Won his first major (MaesumaTOP#7) Won his first supermajor (Kagaribi 7) Won his international debut (Gimvitational) (He also won his first international open bracket at LMM Miami)

once i got over my hatred for steve its really easy to see just how good he is. ofc steve is fucked up but there is a reason acolas at #1 and not another steve player

I still remember when acola still didn’t go to his first major. On Twitter, people were talking about some wifi kid that went to offline tournaments and after his first like 8 locals had a game win rate of over 90%. People didn’t believe it until they watched his gameplay and immediately complained about how frustrating and toxic he looks to fight lmao

I think a really cool batch of sets to watch would be the 2018 prerelease invitational. Plup vs MKLeo in particular was hilarious for the infamous Sakurai stare but also I think it'd be neat to just analyze Ultimate when it wasn't even out yet.

This invitational was utterly important. We needed a really good Steve player to show what he could actually do. No one knew how good he actually was because of covid which stopped Public Tournaments all together.

acola at kagaribi 7 was probably the real introduction for him. he was seed 57 for the event but a lot of people already expected him to win or at least do very well he had won maesuma 7 a few days earlier as well, which was an S tier, and then just followed it up by winning a P tier… i’m pretty sure he had only attended 1 offline tournament prior to these (which he also won). i don’t think anyone else had such a sudden rise to the top. acola is insane…

Wasn't Leo only just starting to miss offline grand finals here and there by the Gimvitational? I think he only had the Summit 4 3rd and the Collision 2022 4th at the time, so he was still definitively the #1 player then.

If we're talking about sets that are influential to smash, how about the set that definitively killed Smash 4? You know, that miserable Bayo ditto set that started with absolutely no gameplay whatsoever while they held the tournament hostage and destroyed any good faith sponsors had left of the scene? I mean it's not like I'm bitter or anything. Nope. Most certainly not.
