In anticipation of “LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part,” we talked to voice acting coaches Joan Baker and Rudy Gaskins about some of the ways Hollywood actors train their voices for animated movies.
The “LEGO Movie” sequel has even more star power than the 2014 original, with Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett reprising their roles and new personalities like Tiffany Haddish and Stephanie Beatriz joining the cast. Celebrity voice casts are becoming the norm for big-budget animated movies. But how do big-name actors prepare for voice roles? Joan and Rudy, two veterans of the voice acting world, explain all the behind-the-scenes exercises and tricks actors use when they voice animated characters.

Actually, a lot of teen characters are voiced by women. This is because they need a voice that sounds shrill, sharp, but bright. Some men can do that but it's just more common to be found on women.

Funny thing, Naruto is voiced by female in Japanese, English and even in my native language 😂. And that voice actress from my country ususally gives voices to male characters that are similar to Naruto, Ang from Avatar Last Air Bender and Marty from Eon Kid. She rarely gives voices to female characters. I guess she just has that "shounen protagonist" kind of voice

It's just like how you baffoons think mangakas are considered a glamourous job that everyone in Japan wants when in reality Mangakas (even the ones like Eiichiro Oda,the creator of the best selling manga of all time;one piece) only gets 5 hours of sleep a day.

It's kinda sad. Voice acting is already a bit of a niche job in America, and then along comes Hollywood demanding that roles be given to live-action actors instead, taking work away from the voice actors. Is it just me or am I the only one who wants to see actual voice actors in big movies like these? And by that i mean voice actors that arent celebrities but trained voice actors who work in shows, cartoons, and animes.

The anime voice actors Aka the Japanese voice actors are one of the beat ones since they do a lot of yelling tbh 😂 That’s probs why some of the anime battle sounds are so epic

When I was a kid, I just assumed the voices were made artificially, using some sort of computer wizardry. I already knew that computers were involved in making the animations, so assumed they produced the voices as well. Even when I realised that humans provide the voices of the characters, I still assumed for a while that computers were used to distort their voices XD.

Meanwhile in other countries you have to do this, and matching the pacing to the real actor for a good synchronisation, for almost no money. And not just in animation. In every, single film.

I see a lot of parallels with exercises for singers, particularly if the repertoire of songs has a lot of variation. I'd be curious to know which advantages/challenges voice acting might have for a singer, compared to an actor.

Awesome...actors rely mostly on their faces and movements to deliver a performance....it’s harder when u have to show the emotions solely thru your voice
@jenniferhiemstra5228
@jenniferhiemstra5228 5 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily harder, just different. Actors who went through college or whatever training program they went to, are literally trained to show expression through their face and bodies from day 1 and still use their voices properly to keep it healthy of course, but it’s just from a health perspective. Then comes along comes a voice acting job where it’s ALL about the voice, your sound, and how to use your voice and voice only to express yourself. Voice acting is a musical sensibility rather than an acting one as your audience will hear you, not see you. Some find it easier to do this, other never quite get it right. There’s a bajillion college program degrees for acting as it pertains to stage and screen but NONE for voice acting, you literally have to find individual studios to train in for it, so it’s no surprise that stage and screen trained actors have a harder time catching on to the specificities of voice acting.
