This vid has a surprising number of negative comments. Which I think is unwarranted. It is a fact that we are losing species and biodiversity is decreasing which is to the detriment of humanity. At least these guys are trying to improve the situation and should be applauded.

While the comments are negative it's valid to criticize ideas. This idea sounds like a waste of resources when what we need to be doing is figuring out a way to slow down the effects of pollution, and set better measures for being more environmentally friendly. Furthermore I am not keen on the idea of tracking devices everywhere and AIs scanning instagram photos etc. And lastly humans are the greatest threat to extinction, so ironically the AIs's most immediate solution would be to get rid of a large amount of the population to save the Earth. TLDR: Sounds incredibly expensive and a waste of resources when better solutions are necessary

Great concept … does someone know the boundaries of it? How small can the animals be in order to still be registrated? The extinction of smaller animals has quite a big impact. What species are currently overseen? And does someone know where to find some good data on the matter?

The question is not "How can ai help humans?" but: "how can humans help A.I.?" Because we are biological in nature, we don't have a single attribute to contribute. Ai would be an accident of nature same thing how we evolved. Evolution, luck and natural selection. A.I. would threat us like we threat nature. In short, how are we helping nature? We are not, we are destroying the very thing that shaped us. How would A.I. that evolves from our minds, and probably the most greedy minds because it takes allot of resources to create it, make this world a better place? Research is done, not by but FOR the wrong people. Same for any tech. It has to make money that leads to power, to make more money that leads to more power. And they will never be satisfied.

I see your passion about tracking biodiversity, but that passion eludes me. I am left wondering about the overarching issue - that being- what WE are doing to CAUSE the problem in the first place. This problem is FAR GREATER than problems with wildlife. It goes to plant life. It goes to aquifers. It goes to health - of ALL species - flora AND fauna. EVERYONE who has extended their education beyond yours, and included both the history and nature of capitalism, as well as history itself, has already concluded that the only way to end the great extinction is to end capitalism. You didn't even mention that. But now, we've gone farther than that. If we were to end all (100% of) fossil fuel emissions TODAY, it would take 1,000 years for the warming trend to reverse. By then, it's unlikely that the earth will sustain all that much life. A new evolutionary chapter will need to begin, and is probably doing so right now. Artificial intelligence isn't the answer, and the shortcomings in your talk prove that. You looked at the smallest part of the picture and described it accurately and with passion. If that's the promise of artificial Intelligence, I'll pass. I prefer to exercise my own intellect in order to see the bigger picture.

Communist countries that use modern technology also cause problems with the environment. Not as much as capitalism but they still cause damage. Overpopulation is a huge problem also.
@gailg1458

@@Catlily5 When you say "Communist" countries, you are referring to the word "communist" as if it is really communism. No, it's not. All countries that call themselves (or we call) communist are CAPITALIST at their core. If they survived without money (capitalism), then they are authentically communist, but they don't. I know of NO country that is called communist that isn't really capitalist with a different way of sharing power for the few. Look at the old USSR and then look at the new USA. Tell me, what is the difference? That isn't a rhetorical question. Do you see a difference, and if so, what is it? I lived through the cold war. I can't see the difference.
@Catlily5
@Catlily5 3 жыл бұрын
@@gailg1458 You have a uncommon definition of communism. As far as power being concentrated in the hands of the few I agree that there is little difference between the USA and the former USSR. Americans probably have more choice about who gets the power. I was speaking from an environmental perspective. Because the average Soviet Citizen was poorer they probably didn't contribute to global warming as much as the average American Citizen in the same period did. Though obviously the Soviet Union did have some bad environmental problems.

@@Catlily5 I know that my definition of "communism" is the original definition that has been intentionally changed over the years (through public "EDUCATION" / INDOCTRINATION to get you to FEAR the makings of a healthy society. I don't like what we call communism and am not advocating anything like it - because we already have it. But regardless of what communism is or is not, if you look at what makes capitalism "tick", it's OBVIOUS that for as long as capitalism rules the world, the world as we know it is guaranteed dead. We will have destroyed it with our insanity.

Bonjour. My sister will ALWAYS love music. She gives free concerts. I will ALWAYS LOVE learning and sharing wisdom I've found. No charge. The world will not come to an end without money. Ecodestruction is caused by capitalism and CAPITALISM is killing us. Technology can still be saved. I happen to love indoor plumbing, electricity, and the Internet (for starters). How many people would be unwilling to volunteer to help keep our most valued technological improvements in their homes? As many as want them, I would guess. Translation of my previous comment : The cause is not "science" or "technology" as it is only a tool. It is up to us to decide what to do with this tool. What is presented here is not THE solution. It is simply ONE solution (to be combined with other solutions) to help save Biodiversity. And I believe we will need all the help available, because a deliberate return to a world without technology is unthinkable. PS: It is clear that patching up will not suffice. We also need to rethink our relationship with nature. Yet this AI method is a small but necessary part of the job. Il est clair qu’il vaut mieux prévenir que guérir. Nous devons absolument repenser notre rapport à la nature. Utiliser l’IA reste cependant une part essentielle ( même minime ) du travail à fournir pour sauver la Biodiversité.

I could, and with surprisingly little resources. 50 or so Billion should cover costs and sustain the program for about a century. It would be extremely simple and most people would have to do absolutely nothing but support legislation that removes profit incentive from food production and establishes a median-bound taxation system that acts both as a safety net and preventative measures against the psychopathic hoarding of wealth and resources. You know a scaling tax system that keeps people from getting too rich or too poor to participate in the economy. It's elegantly simple and most importantly legally achievable under the current system. But am I gonna?

Capitalism is the engine that keeps the destruction moving forward. I see it as the unknown "abomination of desolation as prophesied by the prophet, Daniel" that the Christians often talk about. I encourage everyone to read "Peace Pilgrim". It's available on line and in softcover for FREE. Seeing nature as a part of one's self is where we need to start. (Oh, and if you can find a copy, try "The Secret Life of Plants". Turns out that though they have no "brains", they are still intelligent, communicate with one another, and they can both learn and teach.) The answer begins and ends with us, and taking pictures of nature will not save any species that we are so zealously killing off with our insanity
