GrahamPhelan I agree that hotel prices have been high but now with hotel sites competing and advertising one hotel room against another, I think that has changed. I am indifferent to Airbnb but I also don’t live in close quarters to my neighbours. People on vacation, or students in some cases are partying into the night while the guy next door is trying to sleep for work. It also is taking away rental units from people trying to live in the area. If these people need income to stay in their homes then get a roommate. I did that all through my twenties to make ends meet.

Hotel prices aren’t high, wages are low. But that’s a different story. Airbnb is a cancer and they never fail to send out their online minions to spout their talking points in comment sections, as with the comment above. I hope one day the event they host is a going out of business sale.

Back in the day Airbnb were used all the time. Only they were called room and boards, or bed and breakfast. They were rented out by widows that had all that space where the kids moved out. Or married couples who needed extra cash. They were used by mostly businessmen traveling through or men who were working far away from home.-------

-> So they would rent them by the week, month or year. Then they would go home on weekends to their wives and kids. They would also provide home cooked meals for little xtra that included laundrying. It’s the hotel industry that’s pushing for all out band, why pay $500+/- for one night stand, for half that you can stay at room and board for couple days. Also I noticed during the interviews of every clip o came across on this subject, they always say the poor suffers cause of shortages of housing, as a result of these room and boards. Truth be told shortages of housing markets are brought on by heavy regulations and these illegal land grabbers through both epa & conservation as well as indanger species laws that are used for bullying tactics. And of course section 8 housing as well as welfare along with heavy government regulations. If the hotels wouldn’t charge so much and the unions weren’t lobbying for outrages $$$$, maybe they can attract more customers.

It should simply be that people who own and operate an Air BnB should have to be a resident of the city. And that someone can't own more than two properties they rent thru Air BnB. But will the city leadership go that route?

Some cities are. Like Japan and NY are cracking down on Airbnb rentals. I think some rules are you have to actually live in the listing full time and you are limited to renting it out nor more than 2 months out of the year. Something like that.

@@melodramatic7904 I'm in NYC. The rule is that you can't list a whole unit rental, but there is a cut out for 1-2 family homes (not as common here). NYC is also trying to force Airbnb to take down illegal rentals or disclose the posters. Airbnb has been fighting tooth and nail on that one. When you are providing a whole house/apartment for short term rentals only. You are essentially operating as a hotel without having to pay the additional hotel taxes or comply with the building codes specific to hotels.

Then they should set limits to how many there can be in a certain area and set restrictions that an entire home can not be used for short term rentals and that it must have an owner who lives in the property. That way neighbors will not be stuck with the horrible short term guests who are loud and obnoxious because a homeowner who is renting will most likely not stand for that and it will keep the neighborhood from just being bought up by people who want to be strictly airbnb entrepreneurs therefore properties will still be available to locals who are looking to purchase a home when someone sells.

I’ve moved to Las Vegas from New Orleans being born and raised their its like no other city but it has become extremely expensive to live in New Orleans. They are kicking the poor out when they the ones who created the culture. That city is beautiful but so corrupt and anti black. Just look at the minimum wage and the rent and tell me something ain’t wrong !!!
@IslenoGutierrez
@IslenoGutierrez 5 жыл бұрын
Ryan Delacore I hope you are not insinuating that poor blacks created New Orleans culture, because that’s not at all true. New Orleans culture is multicultural with white and black cultural, culinary and architectural influences. New Orleans has not been majority black for most of its existence. Germans, Irish, Jews and old time southerners once made up uptown and French, Spanish, Germans and Italians once made up downtown. Mardi Gras, New Orleans’ biggest cultural product is French in origin.

NeighborhoodTolerance Actually let me correct you on a few things that you don’t have all the details to. Zydeco is not from New Orleans. It is from Acadiana (southwest Louisiana) and it is indeed multicultural. It is the blending of Cajun music and R&B. Although Zydeco’s creators were black Creoles, it incorporates Cajun music into its repertoire and Cajun music comes from Cajuns, who are indeed white folks. However, Zydeco is from Acadiana and is not New Orleans culture. Moreover, blues is not from New Orleans either. It is from Mississippi and is not New Orleans culture. So to recap, both zydeco and blues are not New Orleans culture. Now we can move on to actual New Orleans culture. Jazz music is indeed multicultural. It has a large black component to it yes, but there is also a white component to it. The first recorded jazz record was from a white band known as the Original Dixieland Jass Band in 1917. Historic White bands such as Stein’s Dixieland Jass band, Brown’s Dixieland Jass Band and Papa Jack Laine’s Brass band highly influenced Jazz as a musical style. Without the influence of these early jazz bands, Jazz would not sound like it does today. Jazz is not solely of black influence. One of the most famous Jazz musicians in Jazz history was a white Creole named Alcide “Yellow” Nunez. Among the white influences on Jazz music, the Sicilian Italian influence was very strong. Many Jazz musicians in New Orleans in the beginning of the 20th century were of Sicilian Italian descent like Louis Prima and Nick LaRocca and Jazz adopted Italian melodies and the lyric Italian trumpet sound. Jazz music is not black music, it is multicultural with influences from both blacks and whites. In fact, that leads us to the next topic you mentioned, second lines. Although second lines do have a strong influence from blacks, again Sicilian Italians have their mark in second lines. Second lines are based on the music from brass bands. It’s a documented fact that New Orleans brass bands found in secondlines and New Orleans jazz are based on Sicilian Italian brass bands that have been part of Sicilian Italian culture all over southern Italy for ages. New Orleans had a large Sicilian Italian population and this population influenced Jazz and brass bands, two things secondlines are based on. So yes, secondlines are part of New Orleans culture, but although it is largely black there is a white element to it in the form of Sicilian Italian brass band history in New Orleans and also it’s connection with jazz. Bounce music I’ll give that to you, that is solely black music. But although that is a part of New Orleans culture now, I wouldn’t call it traditional New Orleans culture. It’s origin is as recent as the late 1980’s/early 1990’s. The food is indeed multicultural. Mardi Gras however is of French origin in New Orleans and is tied to the Catholic branch of the Christian religion and celebrates the last day of feasting before the start of lent. This is done through celebration. There is a black Mardi Gras krewe called Zulu and has a long history in New Orleans, but this was a black addition to a white festival as all the other krewes are historically white. When New Orleans is mentioned all over the world, it is the world class architecture that is among the first things spoken of. The architecture of New Orleans reflects its European origins from France and Spain as well as the American south. As the city was founded by the French and filled up with French people and later with Spanish people, their architecture spread throughout the city. Even the French and Spanish architecture of the early colonial Caribbean has influence in New Orleans from both Haiti and Cuba. In the days following the Haitian revolution most of the white Haitians fled to New Orleans and added the same architectural styles they created in colonial Haiti known as Saint Domingue. Spaniards arrived from Spain, but also from Cuba and brought the architectural influences they created that resulted in the creation of Havana, Cuba. New Orleans architecture is a blend of all of this. My own ancestors were among the early settlers of New Orleans and among the group that created New Orleans out of wilderness. White Creoles continued the architectural creations of their French and Spanish ancestors that first settled the city. These are all the topics you mentioned. So no, half of New Orleans culture is not black. New Orleans culture is multicultural. Some things are black like bounce music, some things are white like Mardi Gras and some things are fully multicultural like the food. Also, the Catholic branch of Christianity was brought to Louisiana with the French and Spanish and even the New Orleans Saints football team shows this heritage in its name Saints, just as Mardi Gras celebrates this connection with the feasting through celebration before lent. That’s why it’s called Fat Tuesday in French, because of the feasting and celebration before Ash Wednesday of the Catholic branch of the Christian religion. Taking all these aspects of food, music, architecture, religion and celebration, New Orleans culture is a multicultural culture with a large white component and a large black component and even a minor Native American component from early New Orleans when the Tchopitoulas, Choctaw, Houma and Acolapissa Indians inhabited the New Orleans area. New Orleans culture is not mostly white or mostly black or even Native American...it’s a mix of all of these and belongs to all of us. From a white Creole to a black creole.....we share this culture despite racial differences. Even the New Orleans dialect is shared by all local New Orleanians and the surrounding area. New Orleans culture is multicultural.

You can't talk about the housing crisis in New Orleans until you speak about all of the housing projects that were torn down after hurricane Katrina. These units which suffered little to NO damage were condemned as being uninhabitable pushing out thousands of New Orlinians (black people) who then could not afford to return. Locals use Airbnb properties as an additional source of income to support their families & businesses. Hoteliers are trying to regulate short-term rentals as it's "affecting" their business but when you come to the city for events like Mardi Gras or Essence Fest there's a shortage of property available for rent. New Orleans economy is based off our tourism & short-term rentals provide jobs to people living in the city & provides visitors housing at affordable costs to support New Orleans biggest business- tourism.

Rents have gotten insane everywhere. Try living in Boston. Or Seattle. NYC. Atlanta. Toronto. Name your city - no one who makes a middle class salary can afford their rents without roommates and/or renting out their spare bedroom or couch. If you are a homeowner, property taxes have become insane. A woman I work with who lives in a Portland Maine suburb pays $8,000 a year just in property taxes. Poorer and especially middle class people - who get no subsidies whatsoever - have been booted out of reasonably priced housing for decades. Don't blame airbnb for this.

They're part of the problem. They themselves don't own the properties, but they provide a platform for those who are set up to abuse it. When AirBNB first came out, they helped home owners make a bit of extra cash by letting them list that they had a room or area of the house to rent out to travelers on a budget. Just like they said in the video, there are still people who are using the platform in this way...the way the service was intended. The issue is there are people who are buying up properties that would normally go to people who actually want to live in these cities, neighborhoods, and the owners are running defacto hotels while AirBNB does nothing to stop them. The company continues to promote their service on the principal that these are homeowners who are looking to make a few extra bucks by renting a room or two, but so many of them don't live, and never have lived, in the homes they are listing and making basically a living wage on this venture alone.

Airbnb is not driving out the locals. The locals are driving themselves out by selling the properties. They are being offered very good money and sometimes that money can be used to start a new life in a new community. That’s like only a condo on the Las Vegas strip. I agree with being able to buy properties on the Las Vegas strip, but it only makes sense as a homeowner to be able to rent it out when I’m not there. Why not let Vegas have more room so that way more people can visit? Why not have the same thing occurred in New Orleans? If you think people are not being deterred by spending $700 a night at a chain hotel in the French quarter? Ridiculous

@@ExitLight Taking it up with property owners stirs up a lot of broader issues, some constitutional, and that is something that people like me do not have the funds or legal knowledge to handle-- especially since property owners in this city are characteristically very very rich and have corrupt connections which have been sown over many generations. New orleans has a lot of skeletons in its closet. So: I am saying, Airbnb, a relatively new company, could develop some restrictions against whole-house rentals and number of properties per person. Much more practical and immediate solution

Just rented an airbnb in New Orleans this past weekend. I can tell how many outsiders were there. Im from Louisiana and visit all the time. Airbnb beats out a hotel any day. They charge $1000 a night during Mardi Gras. The hotels caused this.

Typical case of territorial competition and revenue. If you want to live in a tourist trap town, (which is what New Orleans has become), you will live in strict competition. Big money stock holders and real estate developers will buy up real estate. and its only about the money, they could care less about the locals, or the culture unless it hurts business. This makes the real estate more valuable, so the places being sold will climb until locals cant afford to buy them, then they are bought up by big money share holder companies and there goes the neighborhood. A local owning a rental would probably spread the revenue back into the community, but these people buying and renting are doing so online, and the money goes to many times to people that will hardly set foot in the community at hand. Historical places are controlled on how they look etc. but any greedy asshole with money can buy them, and trust me, they dont give a hoot about locals....

It should be addressed and legislation created to help people keep their homes and programs created to assist in homeownership. I've always wanted to have my own bed and breakfast and thought that Air B and B would be a great start. This same thing happened when Uber hit the scene....taxi drivers got upset and tried to stop it.

Why don’t they stop short term rentals don’t make it legal anymore. It’s a darn shame want to place like New Orleans will possibly die out because people are moving out the people who belong there who lives there who love their community - pushed out by Airbnb whatever that is I shouldn’t be happening and I hope they can turn this thing around. I’ve never been to New Orleans I would like to go to New Orleans and when I do go I want to see all the people who want to be there are there !

Something worse happened in my neighborhood. A bunch of wealthy people buy up properties and rent them room-by-room for exorbitant prices (they post ads on craigslist, AirBnB, and other rental sites). People use AirBnB for long-term rentals, not for short vacation stays! I'm perfectly fine with short term rentals, and I condone people who rent out empty rooms in their primary residence. However, I do have a problem with people running cheap, cramped boarding houses. It causes prices to rise unnaturally and increases population density beyond a reasonable amount. It's not AirBnB's fault - it's the fault of land sharks!

This is good for New Orleans. These are people taking care of properties, paying taxes to a community without using its resources. They are paying property taxes which go to schools and infrastructure, yet don't use them. It also raises the property values of neighbors. Win/Win.

They are buying properties in multitudes that people rent and pay for on time and kicking them out. When your home is sold the new owner can evict you with only three months to find new. If they doing this on huge scales....there won't be a new orleans to visit cause everybody is pushed out the city. This is why home ownership is important

Urgent message: MOST OF THE LOCALS IN NEW ORLEANS ARE NOT THE REAL LOCALS! THESE FOLKS REPLACED MOST OF THE ORIGINAL LOCALS IN THE 1960’s-1980’s AND MASS MIGRATED TO THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS FROM ALL OVER LOUISIANA AND MISSISSIPPI. MOST OF THE ORIGINAL LOCALS NOW LIVE IN THE SUBURBS SURROUNDING THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS, WITH A SMALL PERCENTAGE LIVING IN SELECT NEW ORLEANS NEIGHBORHOODS. IM FROM ONE OF THE ORIGINAL LOCAL FAMILIES OF WHITE CREOLES WITH A CENTURIES OLD HISTORY IN THE AREA. Urgent message ended.

Air bnb should have the land Lords living there period. That's how it started one guy renting a blow up mattress or room. I have and Airbnb directly behind me I hear holiday pool parties screaming kids every other day and night with new crews coming in every other couple days, or the drunken college frat parties till 1 or 2 at night partying in the pool. The real scum bags are the people who own multiple properties that are taking advantage price jacking up properties. This is what is running neighborhoods. I hate the noise from my bedroom window everynight. It gets old calling the cops past 10 at night till 1 in the morning and venting to the owner Airbnb host. What real sucks is owner tells me to F off my my own business when im the one live next to this B's. My other neighbors are pissed off too. Airbnb don't do jack.
