"For us, the Roma, it is our only work, because nobody will hire us", says Renato, a scavenger earning half the average national wage. In the "dustbin of Europe", countries such as Serbia, Slovenia and Russia dump their scrap in vast quantities. Yet Albania's infrastructure is insufficient for dealing with this often toxic waste. Despite efforts to restrict imports, waste continues to enter under the guise of "raw material". In towns such as Elbasan, home to a large metallurgical plant, the poor control on the industry is beginning to destroy the health of its workers. As one doctor describes, "On one hand, the community has been here for a long time, and needs work. But on the other, it cannot afford the sacrifice".

Surely you realise there are many Roma people out there who do not steal and are not so poor that they need to, making that comment nothing but statement of prejudice. Well I am from Albania and I want to share with you that things have changed a lot in 4 years. We have done a lot of progress and we are almost closing the landfills and conserving the waste to turn them into gasses. People arent collecting cardboard or metals anymore but they are working legally in the landfills maintenance. This is a lot of progress but we have a lot more to do!

@@smd6411 There is nothing more to tell you about this topic. But I advise you to visit Albania because It is a marvelous country with gorgeous beaches and stunning mountains. The food here is also delicious and healthy. I mean the traditionally cooked. People here are very welcoming and the prices aren't high either. You can have a great time with a fraction of the money you would spend in other countries.Search on the web about Albanian places to visit.

Someday in the future, those dumping sites will be *GOLD MINES,* as plastic wastes are now re-convertible to oil, compostable to soil by lab-made bacteria, etc. Science is making new advancements in breaking down plastics. Somebody in Asia has recently created a plastic-eating bacteria and it will be brought to dumping sites.

Oh , i've only seen the beautiful part of Albania, but .. even in America trash dumps like these exist and homeless and impoverished people collect scraps to sell to recycling yards. No country is without some bit of poverty i think. Just my 2 cents.

Albania has a huge potential for tourism. I have travelled through whole country from Montenegro and visited Gjirokaster and Ksamil. Those were really nice places with very kind people. There are problems as in every country and Albania has a long way to solve them, but at the end I think this country is beautiful and I will surely come again! The gipsies are the same in every country they live in, dont be fooled they live like this only in Albania. Its very hard to integrate them into major society.

@@conorowens5805 It depends, we can mainly thank the partisans for freeing us from the nazi-fascists but the implementation of a regime probably even more brutal than that of stalin is not justified. During the time of communism we had equal opportunity and if you weren't a artist or journalist or some way involved in politics and didn't care about freedom of speech you were fine I guess. Overall, Enver did more worse than good, his paranoia costs us not just material stuffs and ya know more technical things but tens of thousands of lives. More of an Criminal of the people rather than a hero as their propaganda says.

@@conorowens5805 he was fucked up, cruel, heartless and a devil. He killed all his old friends. Put people in jail if they talked about how nice the west or non-communist country’s are. Put people in jail if they talked down about him or his regime.There was alot of snitches in the community’s. So if you talked bad all they had to do is rat you out and they are believed even if you didn’t say anything. Worst part is some towns had it worse then others. My parents town had to work on tobacco fields. Very had work. And very poor nutrition. They weren’t aloud to have their own animals. Smh

@Eternal FlowBritain = England + Scotland + Wales. Area of Britain: 209,331km² Area of Albania: 28,748km² ...so Britain is over seven times the size of Albania. Albania is a little bigger than Wales (area 20,779km²). This documentary addresses an important issue, but as Lukas Montvilas point out it loses credibility one minute in with such an inaccurate statement.

I've visited albania last year. It's a beautiful country with so much problems. It's a shame to see all the fighting among the different minorities and majorities. You are all sitting in this boat together and I know, if one day, you put your heads all together, you can improve your lifes alltogether. Cinos the Dense potato Romania did fall a lot these years. In all ways,economically,socially ...but Greece did fall a lil’ bit too,not as much as us (Romanians) But they did suffer some changes.I do have the luck to live a more privileged life here but it’s hard here in Romania.of course is not even as bad as in Albania or others .

I just rode my bike through Albania, and I was disgusted by the amount of trash in rivers streams gutters. People have a tendency to drop it. Bins overflowing, burnt plastics smells argh. Tirana's city centre is clean, though 🤔.

I've never seen a single Albanian living in a slum or scavaging trash . Albania is poor but not trash poor . We were offered to become a trash bin for nuclear waste in return of billions of euros and there was a strong disapproval among all levels of people and needless to say it was denied .

yah. Albania suffered one of the biggest economic downfalls in Europe after the communist era. When most comy countries opened up , businesses came in things started working. In Albania the one thing that came from the west was Ponzi schemes. The sucked the country dry in less in then 5 years. I think only Moldova suffered true a bigger economic collapce. For Moldova it was the loss of the Eastern block's internal market. The country relied for 90% of its income on agracoltural export to the commy block and suddenly in 1 day , they lost all of their markets and nobody else wanted to buy.

I spent time in Albania in late 2017, including Durres, Albanians are friendly, welcoming hard working proud people. For those who mention cigarettes, cheapest in Europe at 1 USD for 20 - no tax. I watched a very old woman go through the bins every night at my hotel on Rruga Paverasia looking for items to sell and buy food. Call Albanians what you like, but they get off their ass, to work hard and earn money. A country where Muslims and Christians walk together. Albania has a special place in my heart, I love it and its people, faleminderit Albania.

Apart from joking I truly do believe that ALBANIA is the most beautiful country in the Balkans. The reason is it is the one with the most varied landscapes. So no matter what the other countries are advertising ALBANIA has it all and then some. You want wild mountains, waterfalls, snow, forests, alpine lakes. Pick and choose!

There are a lot of scams out there with stuff like that but make friends with people on social media, contact the embassy, talk to the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, find an NGO (non government organization) to volunteer for and see if they have what you're looking for in helping those in need. Talk to the church and other groups

I have just come from albania,and the thing to change the most is the peoples mindset that its ok to just throw rubbish on the floor,i have lost count amount of people that just throw rubbish on the floor.berat the castle,had litter all down the hill around the base like a dumper truck has just dumped litter there,if i lived there,dont care how long it would take me,it all would be gone,but talking to ALOT of locals,they just dont seem to care??? maybe fines for droping litter,education at schools its wrong to drop litter?,i LOVE the people and country and it make me soo sad the amount youtubers sugar coat it ,there are NOT helping the country.big hug debs xx

The guy who is struggling to make payment's on his truck, could just set up a pick-up route. He could start with other businesses first, and install side rails on the truck at a 20 degree angle to maximize how much he can pick up in one run. Over the years, I have seen many stories told in these documentaries, of poor people around the world. They are neither hopeless or helpless. They just need many legs up. Poverty is one hell of a hole to climb out of.
