2:07 Correction: Cuba seceded from the US in 1902.
With over 800 military bases around the globe, the US is easily the most powerful nation on earth. But it wasn't always this way. The US once played an insignificant role in global affairs. In this 8-minute video, you can see the transformation.
Military budget data: www.nationalpriorities.org/ca...
US foreign bases based on David Vine's book, "Base Nation" www.davidvine.net/base-nation....

Why does the U.S. have 800 bases? That's the easiest question to answer, There's actually three parts to it as well 1. To show/hold power over other countries. 2. Troops can be deployed to areas faster. 3. Most are airbases, which gives bombers plenty of areas to deploy, rearm, and get repairs at

One key factor for America's success is that no other state was trying to prevent America's fast growing at 19th century. The civil war did not last too long and the country went back to united with not too much damage. This allows US to grow from thirteen colonies to a sleeping giant at WW1 and WW2.

Then, after the utter defeat of WWII, Japan had a skyrocketing economy that made it the world's largest manufacturing economy in 1993, just when the asset price bubble exploded.

Thick Daddy While I dont agree with hunk, that’s just not true. Invading China and Russia would be nearly impossible without allied support and although we do have a much larger military, we would be on the defensive most of the war which would cause destruction and economic downfall. Excluding nukes a war between both at the same time would be a decisive stale mate. If we were to fight 1 at a time with allied support I think it would then be very likely to be a victory.

The real reason why the USA is a super power: Geography Just think about it, we have access to the two largest seas while the only countries that could pose as a threat to the US is from Asia and Europe. That’s why throughout the development and expansion of the US we were basically untouched.
@simasima9455
@simasima9455 4 жыл бұрын
@American Patriot Exactly 💯. This has been said even by economists. The entire Americas’ with their strategic location, unique shipping routes, 2 seas, Natural Resources and the fact they are far away from trials and tribulations of Asia, Mid East, europe, africa issues makes it a force to be reckoned with. Their is also legal ownership of airspace & seas that makes even countries more powerful. US & Canada by far have the best. When Hawaii joined US it also expanded US legal ownership of large parts of the Pacific ocean reaching east Asia, meaning if austrialia & nz airlines fly in they must pay up airspace fees to US govt. Keep in mind Canada charges airlines flying over their airspace via the Atlantic...so actually it’s legal for US to do this too😏. If Russia closed its airspace it would do nothing to North America......but it would affect europe especially flights going to Asia, south east, Oceania.

I would argue that based on accomplishments in such a short time that the USA is the greatest country on earth. I mean if you look at the accomplishments and inventions of the USA and Americans, the USA is certainly top of the list. The USA invented the internet, traffic lights, the modern airplane, transistors, cell phones, the MRI machine, and the space shuttle. And the aforementioned list is only a small list of inventions. Also, the USA was the first country to make it to the moon. Lastly, take into account that the USA has only officially been a country since 1776. For the USA to accomplish all of this in such a short time is quite miraculous.

US accomplishments are certainly very impressive and they’re one of the most influential for sure. However, I wouldn’t say it’s an uncontested fact. Britain is up there too, the Industrial Revolution is basically the most significant event of the modern era and vaccines and penicillin saved hundreds of millions of lives. But really you can’t narrow down progress to any one nation as human achievement is diverse.

The US was discovered by an Italian. The first businesses set up there ,trading tobacco, were British, and the revolution was done by the French. These europeans gave development a head start, then with vast amounts of land, slavery, and crops, and being an ocean away from danger on each side, so no real threat of bombing or invasion. Then trade and alliance with the most of Europe, and a political system which favours GDP instead of the people, works in its favour. Also the u.k invented traffic lights, the uk invented the internet, and the uk invented the jet engine, the uk invited the telephone (not cellular though).
@markfullbrighton5070
@markfullbrighton5070 Жыл бұрын
@@tomhigginson6855 I agree with some of your comment, but some of it is factually incorrect. The United States Department of Defense invented the internet. The British on the other hand invented the World Wide Web, which is something totally different from the internet. Your only other mistake is where you claim that the U.K. invented traffic lights. This is not technically accurate. The British were the first to use a modern day traffic signal, however the first electric traffic light was invented by an American named Lester Wire in Salt Lake City, Utah. Lastly, I am certainly grateful for the inventions and discoveries of the British. In fact, in my opinion, the most important invention of all time came from the British: Alexander Fleming and antibiotics.

The American trading system meant that any country could trade (Globalization) unlike the past world where only major powers could trade each other

MooMilkMilk I have heard this argument before and I understand it. BUT, you had back to back giant global wars which basically were able to happen because of the industrial revolution. So to the point, had the US not taken the role we did at the time, there is no reason to think that there would not have been a WW3, 4, and who knows. By strangling the only real opposition at the time by basically outspending them, the US was able to position itself as the world police officer. Now, many will and can argue the United States intentions, but I have always felt that the opinion of the American people in my lifetime has been that to be a just nation and look out for other nations as well as our own interests. I am fully aware that could be debated, and in some cases, possibly rightfully so.

Yes, it is. US took the advantage in WW1, when British Empire got weakened by his neighbours. By selling weapons and join the war at late time so they didn't suffer too much from the War, they really did it. War is a good bussiness for a country
@Khorne_of_the_Hill
@Khorne_of_the_Hill 5 жыл бұрын
That's definitely one reason, but not the only one. Part of it was geographical: we control a massive amount of land rich in a variety of resources, and is flanked by the two biggest bodies of water on earth (this is also what made GB as powerful as it was before we came along, just on a much smaller scale) We also basically paid for both world wars, to be paid back with interest, and managed to install the USD as the default currency for all international commerce by creating the petrodollar system

@Darkdaej
@Darkdaej 5 жыл бұрын
@@Khorne_of_the_Hill True. Geography was a factor in the equation, however your last part probably wouldn't have come to pass had the British Empire not been slowly crumbling ever since the late 1800s. The US had a lot going for it, but if we pretend both world wars never happened, it would have remained a regional power. Likely they would have become the most powerful nation in the Americas, but not a global hegemony like they are today.

First User They were considered a regional superpower because that's all they were. They only have/had influence over "satellite states" of small countries directly surrounding Russia. Even their military is based upon being regional. Lot's of tanks and AA ground based, whereas US has a large navy and air force, capable of projecting massive military presence anywhere on the globe. A superpower is more than just being powerful though, it's cultural influence/military prowess, technological advancements. US was beating Russia in every category.
