How An Anonymous Engineer Made Sense of Voyager 1's Gibberish Signals from Interstellar Space. That’s right! Voyager 1 has broken its silence thanks to an engineer working at the Deep Space Network.
The anonymous engineer examined the code and was able to decode the unusual signal. They discovered that the signal contained a complete readout of the FDS' memory. The FDS memory contains encoded performance instructions and code values that can be altered either by changes in the spacecraft's status or by command.
Additionally, scientific and engineering data intended for transmission back to Earth is stored in this memory. To investigate the recent signal anomaly, prompted by a command from mission control, the team will compare this new signal with data sent to Earth just before Voyager 1 began transmitting garbled binary code.
Any discrepancies found between the regular Voyager 1 data and this signal prompted by the command will help the team pinpoint the source of the issue.
