As a young man on the autistic spectrum I think you definitely need to consider training these dogs to work with adults on the spectrum as well because there is a massive deficit of proper support for us out there especially with all the cutbacks in support and care for people with autism Plus the fact that autism is lifelong

Charlie Avent if you need a autism service dog and you are an adult there are options out there these charities are stupid they they think that your diagnosis stops at 8 or 10 maybe try owner training a dog to be a service dog also there are many professional trainers that would agree to help you as well.

@@mytealjourney4179 No one thinks it ends at adolescence but the specific needs of the person change. At the moment the tasks most autism assistance dogs do mostly won't work for adults because so many of the tasks depend on body weight, and an adult is too heavy. Also the tasks often require a second person to tell the dog what to do. For example one of the main tasks of autism assistance dogs for children is to be tethered to a child outside the house and physically prevent elopement (running off) with their body weight. E.g. like in the video where the dog physically stopped the child from going into the street until the mother said it was safe to go. This only is useful for small children because of their small size and weak strength and because they have an adult caregiver. There might be some tasks an adult with autism would need that a dog could be trained to do but I don't know specifically what tasks that would be or if there are any organisations that have the expertise to train them. You can however train your own dog with the assistance of a private trainer, or hire a trainer to train a dog for you.

The_Service_Hope see I’m on the spectrum and can function pretty typically but suffer with extreme anxiety/ panic attacks and depression so I’m always inside but as I’m an adult I’m not entitled to a service animal
@Rin_Evans4 жыл бұрын
The_Service_Hope unfortunately I’m in the U.K. so unless it’s for medical or a guide dog then ones for mental help aren’t considered a service animal so they are not allowed in public spaces like shops or shopping centres

The_Service_Hope unfortunately no here that would be considered for a therapy dog and that doesn’t give the same rights as a service dog

I'm autistic. I had a cocker spaniel called Harvey but he died, so... anyway, I was diagnosed with ASD in 2015- my parents had been noticing abd behaviour and in my school they said to me that I was always silly and I had to stand outside the staff room every break time- we had morning break, lunch and last break.- My mum took me to a doctor person to tell her what was happening. Cos, like, in year 2, I was like this rly cute perfect angel kinda child. But, in year 3, I wasn't that much of an angel. In fact, I was kind of a devil hehe. So yaa, in year 5 that happened. The doctor woman told me that I had sensory disorder, (I always wore my ear defenders because everything was so loud to me and I HATED bonfire night, I still do hehe.) Later in that year, I was told I actually had autism and the school just didn't know how to work with or handle me so yaa. In year 6, however, one day when me and my mum were walking back home from school and she told me. I WAS MOVING SCHOOL. I was like OMG cos it was like a huge change so. I hated it at first, but then I realised it was for the better 🤓:3 But, before that, at Christmas 2015, we found out we were getting a puppy and, of course, I was thrilled. He is now my autism assistance dog now and I love him. He is now 2, 3 on bonfire night even though he hates fireworks like me so we kinda like help each other out. It's sad tho, bcos like, ,he HATES his birthday, so 2 days after bonfire night, every year, we hold his birthday 2 days after bonfire night. Now I am in year 7!!! And i am in one of the best schools for autism and only 12 children get in every year. Also, I made a new friend at my new school and she got in to my secondary too!!! So, that's my story and yea I need to make a vid about it but still. Thank you so much if you have took your time to read my comment :3333 THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU GET A FREE TACO , unless ur vegetarian like me, then u can have fish fingers, but i dont eat fish either so yaa 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Just have a veggie burger from McDonalds.

In America it’s much much easier for an adult to get a service dog than a child.

Charlotte Rose that’s not the problem the issue is they are not legally recognised as a service animal here I couldn’t walk into a shop with one as support

i’m in the same boat, there’s a charity willing to train one but i can’t take the dog with me into uni and shops etc it’s just frustrating. i wish autism was taken seriously in adults here because it fucks up my life a lot yet the nhs won’t offer much support.. like all they gave me was a diagnosis

Most dogs from the shelter could serve as service dogs unless you have very special needs and training. A companion dog may be enough. Go get one for free.

Failed Guide Dogs are a good alternative option. They have such high standards to meet that many fail but they are still very well trained and need homes.

You could get a puppy breed to be a service dog and train it up or even get an easy- to- train dog from a shelter and owner train it to do what you need.

Hi there, standard poodles would make excellent service dogs for you, as they don't shed! The smaller poodles do as well! I'm totally blind, and I had a standard poodle as a guide dog!
